With Jordan as an unwilling host, Zeta-Rho begins the final steps of his plan to resurrect the Kryptonian Security Council and remake Earth into Krypton. Clark struggles to neutralize the threat while ensuring his son's survival. In the end, Clark is suffers a monumental loss and John Henry gets an unexpected surprise.

Tropes:

  • Alas, Poor Villain: When Edge is defeated, he laments how all he wanted was a family. Judging by Clark's response, he feels sorry for him.
  • Bookends:
    • The pilot had the funeral of Clark's adoptive mother Martha. Here, the Kents have a funeral (of sorts) for Clark's biological father Jor-El.
    • The season began with a flashback to Clark's pod crash-landing on Earth and ends with Nat's pod crash-landing on the Kent Farm.
  • Battle Amongst the Flames: Zeta-Rho/Jordan travels to what appears to be the Door to Hell in Turkmenistan where Superman confronts him, and battles him.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Jordan's body is hijacked by Zeta-Rho thanks to Edge.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Being hit with the red sun hammer purges Edge of the Eradicator, returning him to normal.
  • Catch a Falling Star: Superman saves John when the latter plummets from outer space when his suit's power fails.
  • Cliffhanger: A pod crash-lands on the Kent Farm, and out of it steps Nat Irons, who reunites with her father, then sees her late mother's counterpart standing beside the counterpart of the man who murdered her.
  • Coming in Hot: John Henry's AI warns him that an unknown vessel is approaching at a dangerous velocity. This brings at Clark, John Henry, and Jordan as well as Lois and Jonathan to witness a second alien pod crashing on the Kent farm, leaving dirt craters and a plume of smoke in its wake.
  • Death of Personality: Presumably Zeta-Rho's fate once Jordan regains control of his body for good, just like Zod with Kal-El previously.
  • Due to the Dead: Well, Jor-El was already physically dead for a long time, but with his crystal being shattered, Clark takes the chance to bury it at his favorite tree and eulogize him.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Jordan briefly fights back against Zeta-Rho when his father finds him. He only fully rids himself of his influence with his mother's help, however.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Irons uses up all the power in his suit to stun Jordan and defeat Edge, even though for the latter he's in low orbit and won't survive the fall. Thankfully, Superman scoops him up before he lands.
  • I Choose to Stay:
    • The Cushings decide to stay and help Smallville overcome the crisis. Afterward, everybody seems to have accepted them back into the community.
    • After Lois buys half of the Smallville Gazette, Chrissy gladly decides to stay at the paper after all.
  • I Have No Son!: Sibling variant. When Tal-Rho says that all he wanted was a family, Kal-El responds by saying "You had one. We were brothers." with the past tense implying that Tal-Rho could have had the family he wanted. However, his monstrous actions have made Kal-El disown him as a brother.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Lois uses Edge's memory device to go into Jordan's mind and find the real Jordan so she can convince him to fight back and free himself. Thankfully, it works before poor Jonathan gets strangled by Zeta.
  • Internal Reveal: Superman makes a statement to Chrissy, telling the world that Edge is also Kryptonian.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Leslie Larr takes great delight rubbing it in to Lois about her son being lost.
    • Zeta-Rho also gloats to Lois that she will never find him in the mindscape.
  • Neck Lift: Jordan, under Zeta's influence, grabs Jon and flies a few feet into the air with him.
  • Power Nullifier: Irons modifies his hammer with a red sun core so it can nullify Edge's powers.
  • The Real Heroes: Kyle saves a woman from a burning house.
  • Retired Badass: Sam decides to step down from active duty to finally take care of his family.
  • Say My Name: Both Clark and Lois, at different points in the episode, scream Jordan's name. Clark when he tries to find him physically, Lois when she tries to find him in the mindscape.
  • Season Finale: Of Season 1.
  • Ship Tease: Tegan Wickham smiles at Jon, indicating that the two might become an item after all.
  • Wham Shot: The final scene of the episode has a pod crash land on the Kent farm, and Natalie steps out of it. As she and Irons hug, she sees Lois with Clark and the boys and says, "Mom?" An emotional Lois simply stares at her.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Lois gives one of these to Jordan, reminding him of his inner strength. This helps him break free.
  • You Monster!: Kal-El says this to Zeta-Rho.
