Recap / Static Shock S 1 E 12 Replay

Go To

Static is framed when a bang baby named Replay, a former child actor, creates a clone of him and uses the clone to commit crimes, causing even Richie to turn on him.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: All Replay ever wanted was the attention he had as a child star. When Richie broadcasts his confession to the police outside, he points out to Replay he's on TV again. Replay is initially ecstatic... until he catches on to what he really means.
  • Clear My Name: A large part of Virgil's M.O. this time after Replay makes a duplicate of Static.
  • Disappointed in You: An indirect variation. At the dinner table between the Hawkins family, the conversation turns towards the new of how Static's on the rampage, Robert merely expresses sober disappointment that Static has seemingly gone bad just like most of the other Bang Babies. Compared to everyone else who grew livid at learning Static went rogue, this is a rather measured response, but to some degree, he's still unwittingly expressing his disappointment to his son.
  • Engineered Public Confession: Richie manages to turn on the cameras in the TV Studio to reveal Static fighting the Static clone as Replay confesses to his crimes.
  • Former Child Star: Deconstructed. Replay was once a child star of a sitcom and became incredibly famous for it. But after the sitcom ended, the fame quickly dried up, leaving him with a crippling wish to be rich and famous again. Ironically, his voice actor, Neil Patrick Harris, was also a sitcom child star, but went on to maintain his acting career into adulthood.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: After Replay makes a duplicate of Static and uses it to commit crimes, Static quickly becomes this to everyone else.
  • It's Personal: Replay says this word-for-word to Virgil when communicating over the Shock Vox.
  • Me's a Crowd: Replay's powers.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: If Replay hadn’t called Static on the duplicate's Shock Vox, then Static wouldn’t have figured out a way to listen in on his plan to destroy the studio that canceled his show, where Richie broadcasted the evidence needed to clear Static’s name.
  • The Power of Friendship: Played with. Even though Richie had grown disillusioned with his friend and wholly believed Virgil had gone bad, what convinces him to help him clear his name is when he trusts his gut.
  • Riches to Rags: Replay was a child star variation of this.
  • Spit Take: After Virgil hears that "Static" is on a rampage, he does this.
