Recap / Stargirl 2020 S 3 E 04 Frenemies Chapter Four The Evidence

Go To

The JSA searches for evidence after Starman is attacked.

Tropes:

  • Abusive Parents:
    • Yolanda's mom gets mad at her for being on the phone. She then proceeds to accuse her of telling people about her father losing his job, and states that it is the sole reason Yolanda still has hers. She also nags Yolanda about keeping her (clearly immaculate) room clean, seemingly just to get the last word in.
    • Invoked by Courtney in order to get everyone else to empathize with Cindy by telling them how Dragon King treated her.
  • Aesop Amnesia: Yolanda and Rick, upon not finding Courtney, go to Sylvester and tell him they believe the Dragon King is still alive and may have attacked him at the trailer. Seeing as Sylvester just attacked and nearly killed the Crocks, this is not a good idea.
  • Ambiguous Situation: With the revelation that Cindy's skin is starting to mutate into reptilian hide like her father's, it's unclear whether Dragon King has actually returned or if that was one of her scales found at the crime scene.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Courtney and Cameron after she helps him get a hang on his powers.
  • The Bus Came Back: Pat calls in Dr. McNider to give Sylvester a check-up.
  • Call-Back: The elderly Mahkents once again make reference to Niflheim. With new information come to light since then that both of them have yet-to-be explained cryokinetic powers (and that the world is far weirder than we thought, particularly given the existence of entities like Eclipso and the Thunderbolt), it's implied now they aren't talking metaphorically, but that they are literally (at least part) Jötunn.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Put on the spot, Dr. Chapel blamed Sylvester's wounds on a hit-and-run to hide a potential superhuman attacker. Pat tells her such a cover will cause the police to look for a suspect.
    • Mike gets the idea to wish for the keys to S.T.R.I.P.E. so he and Jakeem can search the tunnels. Cut to outside the bathroom, where there's a pink flash followed by a wave of keys breaking down the door. However he worded the wish, it clearly wasn't specific enough.
  • Dramatic Irony: When Jakeem asks if Dragon King has "reptile skin and big sharp teeth", Mike scoffs saying that's probably an exaggeration. Those who watched "Brainwave, Jr." would know that it's not.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Pat jokes about both Sylvester and Crusher calling each other maniacs, only to get a Death Glare from the former.
  • Fallen-on-Hard-Times Job: Yolanda's mother reveals that they let her take the job at the diner because her father lost his job.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Courtney learns that Cameron has his father's powers, and that his grandparents are similarly empowered.
    • Courtney tells the JSA about Cindy's treatment at the hands of her father.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Sylvester's entire attitude for the whole episode. He feels guilt for making things worse for everyone.
  • Not Helping Your Case: When Yolanda accuses Cindy of attacking Sylvester, Cindy states that if she were his attacker, she would have killed him instead of leaving him alive. Everyone stares at her in disbelief.
    Cindy: Just being honest.
  • Power Incontinence: Cameron accidentally freezes over the art classroom when Courtney presses him on why he's giving up art.
  • The Reveal:
    • According to Dr McNider's hypothesis, Sylvester's years of using the Cosmic Staff have given him a connection to it, allowing him to channel its energies even when separated from it. Though minimal, it gives him a Healing Factor, and is seemingly why he was revived when Courtney first wielded the staff, since its energy output went up at that time.
    • Cameron's grandparents told him his father was murdered, but haven't told him the details because they're trying to get him to replace his father.
    • Cindy's skin is mutating to the point where she is resembling her father.
  • Snow Means Love: Courtney inspires Cameron to try focusing on love instead of fear of hurting people when he releases his cryokinesis. It results in a beautiful snowfall where they have their first kiss.
  • Taxidermy Is Creepy: Paula thanks Barb for her support by taking her advice and making a homemade, therefore heartfelt gift. Unfortunately, this is a stuffed weasel with a permanent snarl. Poor Barb struggles to not show how much it freaks her out.
  • Wham Shot:
    • Cameron turning blue and releasing a frosty blast that ices the art room.
    • The final scene shows that Cindy is growing scales like her father had, hinting that she may actually be responsible for the attacks on Sharpe and Sylvester, or being framed for them, if she's not a huge Red Herring (it's still unexplained how either Cindy or Dragon King would have lifted Sylvester into the air, especially since we didn't see anyone grabbing him).
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Sylvester once again gets this from Pat. This time, he encourages him to be a mentor to the kids.
