Recap / Star Wars: The Bad Batch S2E1 "Spoils of War"

Go To

The Bad Batch is called in to raid the late Count Dooku’s war chest on Serenno.

Tropes:

  • Action Prologue: The episode opens with the Bad Batch fleeing from large crab-like creatures on an ocean planet, having recovered some unspecified cargo and fighting their way back to the Marauder.
Echo: We went over the plan five times!
    Wrecker: I got the package, didn't I?!
  • Art Shift: In-Universe, the squad change their armor design to a more colorful palette and appear even more distinct from the clone troopers who, as part of the shift to the Empire, have shed all the individuality they used to express. Likewise, Omega has switched from her Kaminoan lab-rat outfit to more nondescript civilian garb.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: Dooku fell to the Dark Side after being radicalized by witnessing the corruption of several Republic senators and the oppression they inflicted on their people. This episode begins to show that ultimately Dooku fell to much of the same corruption when it came to building his wealth to fund the Clone Wars.
  • Chekhov's Lecture: Tech's starship lessons in the beginning of the episode, requiring Omega to familiarize herself with the Imperial fleet, allow her to identify an alternate means of escape from the cargo transport when the escape pods are jettisoned.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Tech, Echo, and Omega hurtling to the ground in a shipping container that should have fired its reentry thrusters by now, while Hunter and Wrecker have just plummeted down a damaged lift to parts unknown, pursued by dozens of clones.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • We return to Serenno and Dooku's private chambers, last seen in "Sacrifice", the sixth season finale of The Clone Wars.
    • When the Bad Batch see what the Empire did to Serenno's capital, Hunter compares it to the destruction of Kamino in the Season 1 finale.
    • As in the two-part finale of The Clone Wars, the Clones jettison the escape pods to corner their quarry on the cargo transport.
    • Wrecker still hasn't gotten over his fear of heights.
    • Hunter wants to retire and settle down to raise Omega, still thinking she deserves a normal life.
  • Costume Evolution: The Batch have all customized their armor further, adding more color. Omega, meanwhile, has traded in her Kamino outfit for a more practical civilian outfit.
  • Dramatic Irony: Omega asks about Count Dooku and who he was, with Echo explaining he was a former Jedi who became leader of the Separatist Alliance and waged the Clone Wars on the Galaxy to "free" planets from the "corrupt" Republic government. Of course, anyone knows he was Palpatine/Sidious's Sith apprentice before Anakin/Darth Vader killed him to take his place and that he helped in the creation of the Clones.
  • Fiction 500: Unsurprisingly for a man who was identified as the richest man in the galaxy, Dooku's estate is so lucrative that stealing even a tiny fragment would allow the Batch to buy themselves a new life. It takes the Empire three gigantic cargo transports to ferry the whole lot off-world, and the Batch only intend to steal a couple crates out of a single container.
  • Immune to Bullets: The crabs have shells that are strong enough to shrug off blaster fire, and are smart enough to guard themselves with it when they sense they may get shot.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Cid convinces the Batch to go after Dooku's estate since it's likely enough to set them up for life, and Cid's operation could easily fall to the Empire any day now.
  • Mythology Gag: Upon entering the bombed out remains of Count Dooku's throne room, Wrecker borrows the closest thing Scorch has to a catch phrase in Republic Commando.
Wrecker: This place gives me the creeps.
  • Noodle Incident: We don't see what happened that agitated the pod of giant crab creatures in the Action Prologue, just the aftermath.
  • One Last Job: How Cid sells the heist to the Batch. The contents of even one of Dooku's crates are so valuable that she infers their debt to her wouldn't even matter, and after they would all still be rich enough to do whatever they want without worry. The trope rings especially true with Hunter, who wants to use the windfall to retire somewhere they can raise Omega in peace. Echo, however, believes they should join the rebellion against the Empire once they're no longer in Cid's debt.
  • Orbital Bombardment: The capital city beneath Dooku's castle was razed by the Empire, with the castle itself left intact for the Empire to plunder.
  • Ship Tease: Played for Laughs and then sunk. Phee dismissively looks over the Batch for looking so different from the regs until she lays eyes on Tech. She starts flirting with him, complimenting his brown eyes. When Tech explains that all clones have brown eyes in his usual overly wordy manner, Phee quickly loses interest.
  • Time Skip: A few months have passed since the Batch escaped Kamino.
