Recap / Star vs. the Forces of Evil S4 E35 "Pizza Party"

Go To

Moon and Mina agree to disagree.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unclear if River knows anything about Moon supporting Mina. Him hiding from the Solarians without seeing they betrayed Moon suggests he was kept in the dark.
  • Apathetic Citizens: None of the villagers except for Mina volunteer for Solaria's army, as they're used to the monster attacks by now and feel like changing things was too much work. This is part of the long-reaching systemic problem with Mewman society. The people refuse to take care of themselves and simply expect the queen to take care of all of their needs for them.
  • Assumed Win: The Commission is celebrating their victory despite Hekapoo pointing out that things aren't settled yet, and that Mina just gave her old jellybeans when she tried to contact her.
  • Baby See, Baby Do: As Solaria proposes that the villagers volunteer for her army, an infant Eclipsa mimics her hand gestures.
  • Badass and Baby: Before Solaria made her Solarian warriors and enacted her campaign of genocide, she fought off giant monsters herself with her baby daughter strapped to her.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Once the rooster crows to signal time is up, Mina crushes it in her armor's hand, and throws it off into the distance.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Hekapoo saves Star and the others just as they're about to be captured by Mina.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • Star briefly comments on how she can't believe that she used to idolize Mina.
    • Star's respect for her mother shatters once she learns of Moon's plan to create and army of Solarian warriors to force out Eclipsa.
  • Call-Forward: In the flashback to Mina as a peasant, she is missing one shoe, just as she would later after losing her mind.
  • Continuity Nod: Maude Maizely is amongst the Solarians.
  • Deadly Euphemism: When asked what will happen if Eclipsa doesn't surrender, Moon just says that "Things could get worse."
  • Dissonant Serenity: The Magic High Commission, minus Hekapoo, celebrate the Solarians' violent conquest of Mewni as if it was someone's birthday. Rhombulus gloats over Eclipsa's defeat while his snake hands gorge on pizza, Omnitraxus Prime obsesses over being able to hold meetings with the queen again, and even Sean cheerily says he's glad the status quo is restored.
  • Distant Prologue: The episode opens over three centuries in the past, when Solaria (with an infant Eclipsa in tow) drives a monster away from a village and recruits Mina as the first Solarian.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Unlike the other members of the Commission, Hekapoo has already been shown to have serious reservations about working with someone as insane as Mina. Here she's willing to step in to help the good guys escape.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Moon originally made the deal with Mina to get Eclipsa to step down. She learns that it's unwise to make bargains with overly zealous Super Soldiers when Mina tries to kill Eclipsa after she's already surrendered, and due to Loophole Abuse she can't revoke their powers.
  • Exact Words: The oath the Super Soldiers take is to their queen to get their powers. Moon thinks this means their oath is to her so she can turn them off after she reclaims the throne. What she didn’t take into account was Mina and her soldiers swearing an oath to Queen Solaria, since the wording didn’t say the queen had to still be alive.
  • Faustian Rebellion: A villainous example; Moon magically empowered the Solarians, believing she could take their power away, but discovers she can't because they swore themselves to Solaria, not her.
  • Fearless Infant: Even as Eclipsa is completely horrified of Mina, Meteora just looks furious.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal:
    • Moon admits she still seriously resents Eclipsa for getting her sent to the Realm of Magic, and it's the main reason she distrusts her enough to support Mina.
    • While the mewman villagers in Moon's settlement clearly resented monsters and Eclipsa's new reign from the start, the magnitude of it comes across as a genuine shock, revealing what was interpreted as disdain is outright murderous hatred.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Eclipsa surrenders in light of Moon's betrayal; she was already at a disadvantage against Mina's army, and Moon's backing is the nail in the coffin.
  • Lethally Stupid: Star calls out Moon for thinking she could keep a handle on someone as powerful and unhinged as Mina Loveberry.
Moon: This wasn't supposed to happen!
Star: What did you expect Mom?! You teamed up with Mina!
  • Loophole Abuse: Moon's ability to grant the Solarian superpowers involves a given Mewman pledging their loyalty to their queen who can remove their powers at her discretion. What Moon didn't take into account was how the Solarians pledged their loyalty to Queen Solaria, not her.
  • Never My Fault:
    • Moon claims she had to support Mina to keep her from doing something even worse, but Mina could never have gathered an army, much less magically augmented them into unstoppable warriors, without access to Moon's magic.
    • Moon's grudge against Eclipsa was due to her interference during her fight with Meteora, leading her to end up in the Realm of Magic and be separated from her family... which wouldn't have happened had Moon not acted rashly and continued to attack Meteora when Eclipsa was succeeding in talking her down.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: In light of Moon's alignment, if she hadn't left those corrupted hand prints on the lid of the magic well on Earth, it wouldn't have clued in Star that there was another way to Mewni.
  • Nobody Here but Us Statues: River, who's been wearing a bear costume for several episodes, hides from Mina by pretending to be a bearskin rug.
  • Non-Malicious Monster: The giant spider-like monster Solaria drives away from a village annoyedly points out that they built the village on his nest while meekly walking away.
  • Not What I Signed on For: Moon didn't want the Solarian to attack civilians, much less kill all the monsters or their friends. When she tries to stop them, they betray her.
Moon: I never told the soldiers to attack the monsters. You know how overeager Mina can get. But I would not attack innocent civilians.
Star: [disgusted] I don't know. Doesn't seem too off-brand for you at this point.
  • Pet the Dog: Moon plans to banish Eclipsa and her family from Mewni, which while is a harsh sentence, is nicer than being crystallized for eternity.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Eclipsa's mother Solaria also tended to bring her baby around to dangerous places and liked the same candy bars.
  • The Silent Bob: Marco is unusually silent throughout the whole episode, save for some gasps and screams. At least until the very end, when he says "What happened?"
  • Surrender Backfire: Moon gets Eclipsa to surrender in exchange for her family being exiled from Mewni, but Mina wants to kill her regardless. When Moon demands otherwise, Mina and her soldiers betray Moon.
  • Trivial Title: The title refers to the Commission, dimensions away, holding a pizza party to celebrate the coup.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Star is really livid that her mother joined forces with Mina and tried to overthrow Eclipsa.
