Recap / Star vs. the Forces of Evil S4 E20 "Junkin' Janna"

Go To

Tom comes to discover just how much fun he can have without Star being there as well.

Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: When Rhombulus starts to tell off Star, he starts saying that he has "half a mind to", only for Star to interrupt and say that it's more like an "eighth of a mind". Even Hekapoo and Omnitraxus Prime can't help but laugh.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Tom sees the donuts from Sean that Star had hidden in her clothes to avoid eating them, he decides to try one despite Star's warnings. Instead of being disgusted, he thinks they're delicious.
  • Butt-Monkey: Rhombulus per usual. He gets mocked in front of the rest of the MHC and they laugh at him and when he's next seen after crystallizing Star's phone he's beaten up.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Sean offers Eclipsa and Star some donuts he baked himself. They make Eclipsa visibly ill. Sean keeps offering them more, including a donut burger ("an old family recipe"). Tom's the only one who likes them.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Janna is the main character this episode, getting most of the action and dialogue, although Star Butterfly still remains integral to the plot, yet she's a secondary character, making this a Perspective Flip.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Tom is against attacking a crow for no justified reason, at least until it reveals itself not to be a normal crow.
  • The Extremist Was Right: Though Janna's decision to have the crow killed was too hardcore even for Tom, she ultimately was right that the bird was a credible threat to them.
  • Eye Scream: Tom blasted Sebastian in the eye, but only succeeded in burning off the feathers on that half of his face.
  • Facial Horror: A side of Sebastian's face gets burned and scarred by one of Tom's fire attacks.
  • Foreshadowing: When Tom and Janna find the giant boot in the ruins of Butterfly Castle, it appears to be on a pile of similar-looking pieces of armor. The end of the episode reveals that the crow that took it is working for Mina, who is assembling the pieces into a giant suit of armor.
  • Hulking Out: Similarly to Mina, Sebastian can grow into a giant, muscled bird that not even Tom is a match against.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: This episode may look like a Breather Episode where Janna is trying to give Tom something to do while Star is taking care of an important matter, but this episode serves to establish a part of Mina's evil plot against Eclipsa.
  • Killer Rabbit: Sebastian the crow looks like a harmless ordinary bird, so much that Tom is against hurting him. When he reveals his true colors, not even the demon prince is a match for him.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When it became evident the crow is too dangerous to face and Tom is clearly doing squat against it, Janna and Tom decide they should just scram and not fight it.
  • Malicious Misnaming: When Rhombulus demands Star give up her phone during the meeting she challenges him to take it, calling him "Trapezoidius".
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Before Hulking Out, Sebastian looks like a regular crow, but can still carry around a metal boot that must weigh hundreds of pounds.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: The Magic High Commission suspects Eclipsa of using powerful magic without any evidence it could be her, but rather than properly investigate (or, you know, just call her) they summon her to a meeting they deliberately make her wait for and then bluntly demand she admit responsibility.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: You know something's not right when Janna wants to run away from a crow that can turn into a more monstrous form.
  • Phoneaholic Teenager: Star and Tom both keep sending messages to each other, until Star's mirror is crystallized and Tom breaks his when protecting Janna from the crow. Star even beats up Rhombulus for crystallizing hers.
  • Scars Are Forever: Sebastian receives a scar over its eye after Tom attacked it with fire. This scar may make Sebastian stand out as the leader of Mina's crows.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Janna doesn't have any powers like Star or combat abilities like Marco, so Tom has to save her when she's in danger, and she suggests they should leave when the crow turns out to be more powerful than they thought.
  • Sequel Hook:
    • The Magic High Commission claims someone is casting magic never before used in the Monster Temple.
    • Mina has given her crow Sebastian powers similar to her own and is assembling a giant suit of magical armor, clearly planning to use both against Eclipsa.
  • Short-Distance Phone Call: While with Janna, Tom can't stop texting to Star. Janna has to call him to his compact, despite being right next to him, in order to tell him to put it down.
  • Toothy Bird: Sebastian has teeth when he turns into a monstrous form.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: The Magic High Commission tell Star and Eclipsa that they've found magic that no-one has used in a long time being used in the Monster Temple. What kind of magic it is and who is using it has yet to be revealed.
  • Wham Episode: There's two,
    • Something magical is happening, more powerful than anything the commission has ever seen before.
    • Mina is assembling a giant suit of armor. Sebastian is also no ordinary crow, it's incredibly strong and can change size at will. It's likely Sebastian has been submitted to the solarian experiment, like his master.
