Recap / She Ra And The Princesses Of Power S 3 E 06 The Portal

Go To

King Micah and Queen Angella are shocked by Adora's story. With time to restore reality running out, Adora turns to Bow and Glimmer for help.

Tropes

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Towards the beginning of the episode, Angella headpats Glimmer affectionately.
  • And That's Terrible: Entrapta realizes the end of reality might not be a good thing.
Entrapta: The portal exists somewhere in our world, and as long as it's open it's going to keep destabilizing reality making things disappear faster and faster until BAM! There's nothing left! Ha ha ha ha ha! Which is a bad thing.
  • Bearer of Bad News: Once they return to Bright Moon, Adora has to reveal to Glimmer that her mother sacrificed herself so Etheria could be saved.
  • Breaking Speech: Catra tries to give Adora one as the two are rapidly jumping between various places around Etheria by telling her if she had never come through the portal in the first place, the world wouldn't be getting destroyed now. Adora, however, rebukes this and gives Catra a Shut Up, Hannibal! speech of her own before knocking her out.
  • Bittersweet Ending:
    • Reality is saved, but Angella had to trap herself between dimensions, possibly forever.
    • Horde Prime now knows where his little brother is, and a Galactic Horde invasion is imminent.
    • Adora is done trying to redeem Catra and resolves to treat her like any other enemy.
    • Entrapta is on her way to Beast Island, but because of Catra's lie, Hordak thinks Entrapta betrayed him.
  • Call-Back: Like Shadow Weaver, Adora is imprisoned in the spare room.
  • Cassandra Truth: When questioning Adora Micah casts a truth spell then gets a full download of the situation with the portal reality, him being dead and more. He balks at this. Now in his defense, you probably wouldn't believe Adora either if you were in Micah's shoes.
  • Cowardly Lion: Queen Angella calls herself one, saying she always picks the non violent solutions because she's scared, unlike her husband and Glimmer. However, when the time comes, she chooses to go into the portal in Adora's place, saving reality at the cost of being trapped between dimensions forever.
  • Death Glare: She-Ra gives a withering glare with daggers in her eyes to Catra as she retreats with Hordak. It's so intense, Catra is taken aback for a few moments.
  • Epiphanic Prison: The portal reality and the un-reality field keeps showing shades of a reified version of this.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: In the shot of Entrapta surrounded by her robots, two that greatly resemble Scorpia and Hordak can be seen flanking her.
  • Headbutt of Love: Adora touches her forehead to Glimmer's while comforting her after her mother's sacrifice.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Angella seals the portal, knowing she'd be trapped in it.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: As Micah disappears, he shouts, "I'm not-!" to Angella. The most likely end to the sentence is "dead."
  • Negative Space Wedgie: The out-of-control portal. As the episode goes on, the distortions get worse and entire regions of Etheria start disappearing and (as Adora learns) because it’s being caused by the sword, the effect centers on her: wherever she goes, that’s where the portal will hit next.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: Due to her Heroic Sacrifice, Angella never gets to say goodbye to Glimmer or fully reconcile with her after their fight a few episodes back. She did at least get to spend one day having fun with her daughter, without the weight of the war on their shoulders, before then though.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Catra tries to make a Breaking Speech to Adora about how her own inadequacies as She-Ra broke the world and everything is *her* fault. All it does is make her finally realize she's not to blame for Catra's actions, and once she does, she easily defeats her.
  • Oh, Crap!: After Angella sets everything right and Adora gets the Sword of Protection back, she steps through the portal onto Hordak's lab. Then, she turns and destroys the portal machine. Immediately afterwards, she directs a furious Death Glare toward Catra (who is indirectly responsible for Angella's sacrifice), and Catra finally seems to realize that she may have pushed Adora just a little too far.
  • The One Where Everyone Dies: By the climax, everyone on the face of Etheria (minus Adora and Angella) have been erased by the portal. Angella sacrifices herself to save everyone, bringing everything back to normal with her being the only casualty.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The first we see of them in the altered reality, Angella and Glimmer are playing catch together, with no arguing or bickering whatsoever.
  • The Power of Hate: Catra manages to drag herself back into existence on sheer hatred for Adora.
  • Punch Catch: Catra tries to hit Adora during the latter's Shut Up, Hannibal! speech. Adora effortlessly catches and throws her.
  • Ret-Gone:
    • As a result of the Fright Zone being erased by the portal, Bright Moon is in a state as if the Horde never existed. As such, Angella and Glimmer have a happy relationship, Micah is alive, and Bow is a researcher (as there was no Rebellion for him to join).
    • As the portal gets stronger, people start fading out of existence even without being swallowed by the rifts to the point that (by the final act) only Adora and Angella are left.
  • Shattered World: The final moments of the episode show Horde Prime has recently destroyed a planet.
  • Shifting Situation Duel: The setting for the fight between Catra and Adora keeps shifting due to reality being destroyed by the portal. It’s not clear if either has any real control of the process but when Catra has the upper hand she is never inconvenienced by the environment the way Adora is.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: When Adora finally manages to overpower Catra in their fight, cuts off Catra's latest Never My Fault speech, she makes it clear to the latter that she is not to blame for Catra activating the portal in no uncertain terms, telling her she is responsible for all the bad things she's done and that have happened to her.
  • Talk to the Fist: Adora punctuates her Shut Up, Hannibal! speech to Catra by decking her across the face and knocking her out.
  • Voice of the Legion: Catra's half-erased condition comes with her voice becoming two-toned.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Once things return to normal after Angella's heroic sacrifice, She-Ra gives Catra a vicious Death Glare, letting her know there will be no further attempts at redemption. From now on, She-Ra is just going to treat her like any other member of the Horde. Catra is rather shocked at She-Ra's expression and makes a hasty retreat.
  • Wham Episode: Queen Angella sacrifices herself to restabilize reality, and Adora very much disowns Catra for her selfish and hurtful actions.
  • Where It All Began: Adora realizes in the end that Madam Razz's message to go back to the beginning meant to go back to her beginning, specifically when the Horde took her from her home planet as a baby, which is where she finds the entrance to the portal.
