Recap / Scooby Doo Mystery Inc S 1 E 21 Menace Of The Manticore

Go To

After the Mayor purchases a haunted temple off the internet, Crystal Cove's only theme park, Creepy Spooky Terror Land, is besieged by a Manticore.

The episode has examples of:

  • Ambiguously Evil: Mayor Jones.
    • Velma walks in on Mayor Jones searching through Fred's room for an unknown reason, and this is also after he specifically requests Velma instead of Fred to report to him about their findings on the Manticore investigation. Mayor Jones hastily claims that he was looking for the receipt on the temple before excusing himself out, and Velma points out how flimsy it sounds. Given that "Escape From Mystery Manor" showed that he knows the gang has a piece of the Planespheric Disk and that he may be after it, it seems to be the reason.
    • The original Mystery Incorporated doesn't seem to trust him, as it seems that Brad and Judy refuse to return to Crystal Cove "as long as Fred Jones is still alive." Then again, the original Mystery Incorporated is looking to be Ambiguously Evil themselves as well.
  • Ambiguous Situation:
    • Mayor Jones is seen looking at a mysterious scroll and hastily puts it away before the kids enter his office. Upon being asked about it, he claims that it was plans for his mayoral library for after his term ends, but after Velma points out that only presidents get that, he Verbal Backspaces and says that that's why he's scratching the idea. Mayor Jones usually doesn't backspace on his ideas, especially if someone contradicts him.
    • Mr. E. states that the two other members of the original Mystery Incorporated, Brad and Judy, won't get involved so long as Fred Jones is still alive. Again, which Fred Jones, and why does his existence threaten Brad & Judy?
    • Angel warns Velma that it is crucial that they keep the disk piece safe. When Velma asks from who, Angel just says so. From what we know so far, we can assume that she may be referring to Mayor Jones and/or Mr. E.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At first, the only thing we see of Mr. E. physically is his arm... and then at the end of the episode, it turns out that he may well be Ricky Owens, one of the original members of Mystery Incorporated.
  • Blatant Lies: Mayor Jones.
    • Mayor Jones is looking at a strange map that he immediately stows away when Fred, Daphne, and Velma walk into his office unannounced. When they ask him about it, he claims that it was for his plan to build a mayoral library after the end of his term. When Velma points out that libraries are only for presidents, he admits that he's changed his mind about having one. After they leave, he looks relieved and returns to looking at the map, as if he was hiding something.
    • Velma walks in on Mayor Jones looking through Fred's stuff, to which he claims he was looking for the receipt to the Manticore Temple because "it's always the last place you look." Since Velma was told earlier by Angel to keep the piece of the Disc that they found safe from bad people, it's obvious Velma thinks he might have been looking for the piece and she asks Fred where he put it afterwards.
  • Call-Back:
    • The end of "Escape From Mystery Manor" showed that Mayor Jones was listening in on the gang when they were talking about the piece of the Planespheric Disk that they got from the Darrow Mansion. This episode follows up on that when the gang finds him searching through Fred's room, presumably because he was looking for the piece.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Dylan and Brenda were hurt by the Man-Crab and have somewhat recovered from their injuries.
    • Mayor Jones used the leftover Que Horrifico t-shirts to buy the temple.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Fred reveals that he gave the disc piece to Shaggy and Scooby, because no one would suspect them of carrying anything important.
  • Death Glare: Hot Dog Water gives one to Shaggy and Scooby for slacking off on the investigation so they could eat instead.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Creepy Spooky Terror Land.
  • Exact Words: Fred sends Shaggy and Scooby to investigate the amusement park, and they're specifically told not to head for the nacho stand. So instead, they go for the cotton candy and churros.
  • Failed a Spot Check: The website is clearly fake, yet Mayor Jones apparently didn't realize that the company was a fraud when they claimed they sold the Statue of Liberty and numerous other well-known monuments.
  • Foreshadowing: Earlier on, Angel calls Mr. E, "E", and he calls her "my little Angel". "Ricky" and "Mr. E" end the same and we learned in "Escape From Mystery Manor" that there was Ship Tease between Cassidy and Ricky, so these are Affectionate Nicknames.
  • Gilligan Cut:
    • After Mr. E states at the beginning that "the other two" won't do anything "as long as Fred Jones" is alive, the scene cuts to Mayor Fred Jones Sr. asking for help from Fred Jr. and the Gang.
    • When Velma asks Angel why it's so important to hide the piece of the Disc she and the Gang have found, Angel answers that there are bad people that can't be trusted. The scene cuts to Mayor Jones inspecting a mysterious map that he immediately stows away when the Gang walk into his office unannounced.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: At first, it seems the episode is another monster-of-the-week story, but overall, it drops major hints that Mayor Jones may be one of the bad people that Angel warned to keep the pieces of the Planespheric Disc hidden from. We also learn that Mr. E is Ricky Owens and that "the other two" may be Brad and Judy, who are still out there.
  • Internal Reveal: Velma seems to be suspecting Mayor Jones of knowing more than he lets on about the disk pieces.
  • Irony: Velma walks in on Mayor Jones looking through Fred's stuff and he claims that he was looking for the receipt to the Manticore Temple, and he was looking in Fred's stuff because "it's always the last place you look." Velma asks Fred where he put the piece of the Disc, and he reveals that he gave it to Shaggy and Scooby because they're the last place anyone would look.
  • Kick the Dog: Mayor Jones doesn't ask Fred to do stuff for him often, leading to Fred shaking in excitement that his father is finally asking for his help. He also calls Fred "girly" for responding that way, and shuts down his offer to join the investigation solely because he doesn't want to.
  • Killed Offscreen: Mayor Jones says that the Manticore has been eating tourists, though it's possible that they were actually disposed of in a non-lethal fashion. It's later explained in the wrap-up that Hot Dog Water was deliberately trying to land her victims in soft-landing places like she did with Scooby and Shaggy.
  • Laser Hallway: Angel traverses through one in the Destroido Corp building.
  • Monster of the Week: The Manticore, a beast terrorizing Crystal Cove's theme park due to the cursed temple that was purchased as an attraction.
  • Mythology Gag: Linda Cardellini, the actor for Velma in the live-action Scooby-Doo movies, is the voice of Hot Dog Water.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: When asked about what the map he was looking at was for, Mayor Jones claims it was for choosing where to put his mayoral library after the end of his term. Velma points out that only presidents get to do that, to which he does a Verbal Backspace. Since Mayor Jones is usually stubborn and doesn't care what other people say, this is strange for him.
  • The Reveal:
    • Ricky Owens is Mr. E.
    • The "other two" working with Mr. E and Angel are implied to be Brad and Judy.
  • The Rival: Hot Dog Water to Velma. The others seem pretty neutral about it.
  • Skewed Priorities: Fred, upon seeing the Manticore, comments that his dad will be pretty stoked. The others have to grab him as they flee.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Velma has been bugged by Angel.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Angel has bugged the gang to figure out where they kept the piece of the Planespheric Disc to her boss, Mr. E.
    • Mr. E. is one of the other members of the group, Ricky Owens.
    • Brad and Judy are still active, but they won't return to Crystal Cove so long as Fred Jones is still alive. Which Fred Jones is not made clear.
    • If it hasn't been obvious before, it's getting more and more clear that Mayor Jones knows more than he lets on.

Angel: I put a bug on Velma when I saw her earlier. She didn't suspect a thing. Later, I heard Fred tell her that Shaggy and Scooby have the piece. But he didn't say anything more than that.
Mr. E: He told Velma and us enough. Everything will work out just fine. You see, Scooby is a far more trusting companion than Pericles was to me.
