Usagi: Yay! It's festiva-
Chibi-usa: Usagi! That lady over there...
Usagi: Okonomiyaki, yakisoba, shaved ice!
Chibi-usa: Doesn't she look like she's hiding something?
Usagi: Sausages, chocolate covered bananas!
Chibi-usa: Are you even listening to me?!
Usagi: Hey! Stop interrupting my fun or else, In the Name of the Moon...
Both: We'll punish you!

(CWi Episode: "The Duchess's Day Off")

Usagi and Chibi-Usa end up in the company of an actual princess and tag along with her wish of spending a fun day at the Juuban Summer Festival. But things get complicated when they have to keep the princess safe from her own ignorance of life outside the palace walls.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Asshole Victim: Local predator and emotional manipulator Hawk's Eye gets his head bonked by a helium tank and is forced to pay for the lost balloons.
  • Be the Ball: Just like her fallen brother-in-law, Gomumario, Elephanko takes on the form of a giant yellow ball. And she turns human after Tuxedo Mask intervenes.
  • Black Sheep: Elephanko brags that Gomumario is hated among the entire family for his arrogant nature.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: A little boy screams his lungs out after his mother refuses to buy him a balloon at the festival.
  • Character Filibuster: Elephanko goes on a rant about her poor relationship with Gomumario that she has to be reminded by Hawk's Eye to attack the heroes.
  • Continuity Nod: Elephanko expresses gratitude to the Sailor Guardians for killing her brother-in-law Gomumario whom she had bad blood with. She also has stories to tell about Puko the Balloon Lady.
  • Didn't Think This Through: After Mamoru takes his leave, he promises to treat Usagi to anything she wants the next time they go on a date. He silently regrets it when he has to commit to anything she wants.
  • Disappointed in You: Luna is dismayed to hear that Endymion would pretend to be sick to get out of royal responsibilities just like Serenity.
  • Festival Episode: The Summer Festival has come to Juuban and Princess Rubina convinces Usagi and Chibi-Usa to escort her.
  • Flashback: While seeing a bratty kid make a scene in public, Rubina remembers a time when she was scolded by her servants for acting "spoiled" and how she needs to put the needs of her kingdom first.
  • Genre Savvy: Both Hawk's Eye and Fish Eye are quick to figure out that the "Princess is sick" story is full of baloney along with how she ran away because she was tired of her royal lifestyle.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Elephanko proclaims to be so strong that not even her elephant can break her. After a few seconds, her ball starts to crack.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Rubina's one wish is to be free from her heavy responsibilities and live a happy life as an ordinary woman.
  • Language Barrier: Coming from the European-coded Kingdom of Amethysts, Rubina has a hard to fully understanding the Japanese language. This obstacle is removed in the English Dubs.
  • Mistaken Identity: After Hawk's Eye reveals that he knows the princess' true identity, she shoves him aside believing that he was sent by her government to take her home.
  • The Needs of the Many: A duke from Rubina's court reminds her that she needs to put aside her own desires for the sake of her people.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Princess Rubina can be seen as a homage to both Audrey Hepburn and Princess Diana, who visited Japan at the time of this episode’s original broadcast.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Rubina has no problem getting unreasonably close to anyone during her public tour.
  • Not Quite the Right Thing: Rubina's gesture of giving a balloon to a child would be seen as a lovely thing to do. If it wasn't for the fact that said child is actually a spoiled brat throwing a hissy fit after his mother told him no.
  • Older Than They Look: Princess Rubina is a lot older then what her appearance suggests.
  • Playing Sick:
    • Princess Rubina is televised to be back home recovering from a bad cold. In truth, this was a lie made by her government to keep the public calm so they can find out where she ran off to.
    • Diana brings up how Neo Queen Serenity and King Endymion would conveniently become sick whenever they had to attend to royal ceremonies. Luna can tell the reason for it.
  • Rebellious Princess: Rubina escaped the watchful eyes of her guard because she wanted to explore life in Tokyo and live like a normal woman for a day.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Both Usagi and Chibusa run for the hills after the strange blonde lady tries to rope random men into helping them with their bags.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Third-Party Peacekeeper: Seeing Usagi and Chibi-usa get into another squabble fest inspires Princess Rubina to step in and figure out a resolution for their conflict.
  • Villainous Rescue: Hawk's Eye shows up and tosses the balloon vendor aside before he can spark an international incident by hurting the princess.
  • Would Hit a Girl: The balloon vendor comes dangerously close to punching Rubina for giving away his balloons without payment.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The episode's story is inspired by the romantic comedy Roman Holiday. Even the episode's title is based on the movie's, and Princess Rubina bears a resemblance to Audrey Hepburn’s character, Princess Ann/Anya Smith.
