"Flowers are short-lived but so pretty while they last and their beauty makes people happy. Why would anyone take a wonderful flower and make it into a killer?! I won't allow these plants to be used for evil! That's gonna give florists everywhere a terrible reputation! In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!”
Usagi Tsukino

(CWi Episode: "Fiendish Ferns")

Following Mimete's demise, a new witch named Tellu organizes an elaborate plan to capture Pure Hearts from the unsuspecting public using her special Tellun flowers. Setsuna grows suspicious of the plant and investigates. As this happens, Hotaru awakens and runs away to reunite with her best friend.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • All According to Plan: Tellu smugly thinks to herself that her plan is progressing smoothly after giving Hotaru a Tellun flower.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Professor Tomoe decides to take a break from the Monster of the Week formula to have his minions use alternative methods to steal mass quantities of Pure Hearts.
  • Call-Back: Tellu's scam of selling dirt cheap Tellun flowers to the public brings to mind Jadeite's energy draining operations from the first season.
  • Cliffhanger: Moon and Tuxedo Mask discover the late Tellu's handbook which ties to Mugen Academy while Chibi Moon informs her old friend Pluto that she still believes in Hotaru.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Damsel in Distress: Upon realizing that her other self took control to go after Chibi-usa's Pure Heart, Hotaru begs her to help her. And to everyone's horror, Kaolinite shows up to take her home by force.
  • Declaration of Protection: Even though her words fall on the deaf ears of the Outers, Chibi-Moon vouches for Hotaru's good heart and vows to protect her.
  • Dwindling Party: Now that Mimete kicked the bucket, the remaining witches have branded themselves as the Witches 3.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Hotaru tries to resist her other self so she can reclaim her body.
  • Foul Flower: Along with capturing Pure Hearts, Tellun flowers are also able to drain the life energy of anything organic that's next to it.
  • Green Thumb: Tellu's specialty involves creating beautiful but deadly flowers with the ability to steal Pure Hearts. She even uses plant themed attacks.
  • Hoist By Her Own Petard: Tellu created Tellun flowers with the purpose of stealing Pure Hearts from the Juuban public. She would meet her demise after being attacked by her Hyper Tellun.
  • In Medias Res: The episode picks off with Tellu pulling the plug on failure.
  • Internal Reveal: Kaolinite appears before Usagi and the cats while she abducts Hotaru.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Luna snarks at how Chibi-usa inherited Usagi's stubbornness.
  • Man-Eating Plant: For her final trick, Tellu injects the last flower with a special serum that turns it into a Hyper Tellun. Along with it's monstrous appearance, it's said to self-destruct after extracting a Pure Heart.
  • Mood Whiplash: There's a soft and tender mood as Kaori gives a massage to her boss while expressing gratitude for him saving her from death. But then it turns somber after Tomoe expresses disappointment that she isn't using her abilities to further their agenda.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Hotaru has this reaction after she almost attacks her friend for her sugary Pure Heart.
Hotaru (Cloverway): Oh Rini, what have I done?!
Rini: Besides making your eyes red?
  • No Honor Among Thieves: Pluto and Uranus comment on how ruthless Tellu was in killing her coworker.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Hotaru gifts her best friend a Tellun flower, completely unaware of it's energy draining properties. This makes her look bad towards Setsuna who already had a negative opinion about her.
  • Oh, Crap!: Artemis comes to the startling realization that Chibi-usa was running away to Mugen Academy to find Hotaru.
  • Protective Charm: The Garnet Rod instantly appears to protect Setsuna from having her Pure Heart stolen by the blooming Tellun flower.
  • The Reveal: Kaori was resurrected by the will of Professor Tomoe.
  • She's Back!: A villainous example. After hearing how her boss wants her to get back to work as a field agent while claiming that "she's the only one he can count on", Kaori summons her powers and turns into Kaolinite once again.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Despite the protests of the Inner Team to spare Hotaru, Uranus remains unmoved as she and her team are determined to kill her before she can bring about the apocalypse.
  • Taking the Bullet: Sailor Pluto stands in front of Chibi Moon to save her from Tellu's electrifying vine attack.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Tuxedo Mask gets the win for the day as his rose attack is instrumental in Tellu's death.
  • Villain Ball: Rather then wait a little longer to fully activate her Tellun flowers which have been scattered throughout Juuban, Tellu decides to start early by attacking the customers in her shop. This results in the Sailor Guardians showing up to stop her.
  • Willfully Weak: Kaori is shown to have had full access to her powers since her resurrection. The only reason she didn't use them was because she wanted to stay emotionally close to her boss as his personal assistant.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Chibi Moon gets Pink Sugar Heart Attack to work and deflect the vines from Tellu's wrist. She then summons the vines from her other arm to attack her.
