Recap / SMG4 - The Splatfest Incident

Go To

Finally, Splatfest day has come! But wait... things are... different?
The day of Splatfest approaches, and surprise surprise, the first round is against Desti and the Octoposse.... hold on. Where did Meggy go? She wouldn't miss an event like this, so what happened to her? Part eight of the Anime Arc, despite the "Anime" part being over after last episode.

Upload Date: 4 May 2019

The Splatfest Incident contains examples of:

  • Badass in Distress: Most of the episode revolves around Meggy's disappearance. At the end, she's revealed to be chained up in a dark room by a shadowy figure.
  • Berserk Button: Despite her selfish, "I'd rather be anywhere but here" attitude and Yandere nature, Saiko cares deeply for her friends, especially Meggy and Tari. Implying that she'd deliberately hurt one of them is a bad idea, as Desti finds out via hammer to the face.
Saiko: I'm telling you, you're wasting your time if you go after Axol!
Desti: You seem awfully defensive of him. Maybe you also had something to do with this!
    Saiko: WHAT?!
  • Brick Joke: Bob dual-wields dakimakuras as an attack again. It fails, yet again.
Bob: This has to work this time, bring me that green pickle ass boi!
(Luigi sidesteps, causing Bob to slam into the wall)
Bob: There goes my ovaries again.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Fighting without their leader, the SplatSquad attempt to give it their all anyways and give it a good competition, even getting in a few shots against the Octolings. Once Desti makes her move however, it proves to be too much of a hurdle to climb. By the time halftime sounds, the Octoposse has covered 70% of the map in their ink.
  • Enemy Mine: Desti offers to help Mario's team find Meggy.
  • The Hopeless Replacement: With only seconds left before Splatfest starts, the SplatSquad is forced to replace Meggy with Bob. He wasn't going to help much (not even knowing how his weapon works) but Bob's refusal to even move from the spawn zone doesn't win him any points with his teammates.
  • A House Divided: How the episode ends. Desti, Tari, Luigi and Mario (Team Bootcamp) go looking for Axol while Saiko, SMG4, Bob and Boopkins (Team Japan) remain behind.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Desti, twice.
    • One of the reasons Desti offers to help Mario and his friends find Meggy is that beating the SplatSquad without her offers no challenge, but she specifically calls out Bob for being an exceptionally piss-poor substitute, to which he agrees.
    Bob: Lol fair.
    • She accuses Axol, the friendly and eccentric manga artist, of kidnapping Meggy. Despite her blunt way of saying this, Tari notes that Axol does have the very understandable motive of getting back at the citizens of Inkopolis for treating him like crap as a child. And when SMG4 points out that Axol helped them with his Ink Weaver, Luigi chimes in that since Meggy's ink made his drawings much stronger, it's highly likely that he kidnapped her for that reason.
  • Not Me This Time: Mario accuses Desti of having something to do with Meggy's disappearance, and she denies it. The evidence at Meggy's apartment points to someone else as the culprit.
  • Oh, Crap!: Mario, Luigi and Tari when they realize that their first round opponent is Desti and her Octoposse.
    Luigi: WHAT?!
    Mario: Ooooooh....
    Tari: Already?!
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Meggy's kidnapping is enough to make Desti, noted for her willingness to win no matter what, pass up an almost-giftwrapped victory with the SplatSquad missing their shot-caller. Doubly shocking when her reason is because she wants to beat Meggy fair and square.
    • Noted by Luigi and Boopkins. Meggy wouldn't leave her weapon behind, and she definitely wouldn't store anime in her house — and they realize that something bad must have happened.
  • Poke the Poodle: While the fight that breaks out between the rescue team is treated as serious, Boopkins and Tari's fight consists of Boopkins calling Tari a very bad friend and Tari crying in response. Then Boopkins cries and says sorry.
  • Shout-Out: Those that believed that Axol was either innocent or guilty of kidnapping Meggy get into two groups as a reference to Captain America: Civil War with Mario even lampshading it.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: In the Splatfest. After running out of ammo while fighting Mario, one of Desti's teammates submerges in the ink on the ground to replenish her ink. Mario attempts to follows suit...and hits the ground hard, since only Inklings and Octolings can do so.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Desti's reason for rescuing Meggy certainly smacks of this.
