Go To

The first episode of the second season of Rugrats.

Toy Palace

Tommy and Chuckie are accidentally left inside of a toy store after it closes.

Sand Ho!

The babies pretend to be pirates.

"Toy Palace" provides examples of:

  • Adults Are Useless: While Stu and Chas eventually find out that their children are locked in the Toy Palace and rush back to find them, the Security Guard assures them that he would know if any children were inside the store thanks to the security system. Unfortunately, he wasn’t watching any of the security monitors, and was instead watching a portable television.
  • Art Evolution: Tommy and Chuckie receive slight redesigns in this episode. In particular, they look more refined and cleaner.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: A downplayed example. After he gets launched off the train when he turns it off, Tommy inadvertently switches on a life-sized Thorg doll, which chases him and Chuckie throughout the store. They eventually stop him with the help of a life-sized Reptar doll.
  • Broken Record: The operating life-size Reptar doll keeps constantly saying "Halt, I am Reptar!" over and over when activated, even though Reptar normally doesn't talk.
  • Brought Home the Wrong Kid: Tommy and Chuckie switch themselves with a baby doll and a monkey doll so they can stay in the Toy Palace overnight. Stu and Chas don't even notice their kids are gone until after they arrive home.
  • Cool Train: The large model train that runs throughout the Toy Palace, which Tommy and Chuckie ride on at one point. At one point it even passes through an operating miniature railroad crossing and train station building with figures, both of which Thorg destroys during its rampage.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Toy Daleks are briefly visible in one scene.
  • King Kong Copy: Thorg is a giant purple ape that acts as a King Kong Expy counterpart to the mainstay Notzilla Reptar.
  • Mammal Monsters Are More Heroic: Inverted with the kids and the Godzilla Expy Reptar, their favorite character. Tommy and Chuckie get locked inside the titular toy store. Tommy at one point accidentally turns on a life-sized doll of Thorg the ape, which chases him and Chuckie throughout the store. Tommy later manages to turn on a life-sized doll of Reptar, which pushes the Thorg doll into a Time Machine and "saves" the babies.
  • Mundane Utility: The Toy Palace has, among its assorted toys intended for children being sold, a working time machine. And this isn't one of the babies' imagine spots.
  • My Little Panzer: The Toy Palace is filled with these examples, all played for laughs. Avogadro the Alligator is powered by cold fusion, and there's the Wee Willy Warp Time Translator, which is explicitly labelled as being for kids.
  • Nerdy Inhaler: This episode shows that Chas has asthma.
  • Papa Wolf: Once they find out that their respective sons have been left behind in the Toy Palace, Stu and Chas race to the store to retrieve their babies. Ironically, between Stu and Chas, it is Chas who is more adamant about rescuing his son while Stu is easily distracted by the security guard's state-of-the-art security cameras.
  • Shout-Out: Thorg vs. Reptar
  • Spit Take: Stu and Chas see their sons on one of the security screens and as they rush out, the security guard takes a good look at at the monitors, and spits out his coffee in shock, then follows the dads out the door.
Security Guard: Holy McGillicuddy! They penetrated the net!
  • Time Machine: The Wee Willy Warp Time Translator. It really works, as it sends Thorg back to the time period when Washington crossed the Delaware River.
  • You No Take Candle: "Thorg hungry! Thorg want eat!"

"Sand Ho!" provides examples of:

  • An Aesop:
    • Bullying is wrong. It can come back to bite you later on.
    • There's a point where playing pretend can be taken too far. Be careful to not get too lost in that fantasy.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: This exchange when Angelica attacks the babies' pirate ship;
Phil: I think we're gonna be drownded!
Lil: I think we're going to be captured!
Chuckie: I think I'm gonna be sick.
  • Imagine Spot: This episode features the first of many from the babies.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: When Angelica forces Tommy to walk the plank, Didi catches her in the act and makes her clean the kitchen as punishment.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Tommy wears an orange shirt with white stripes in this episode, as opposed to the light blue shirt he normally wears.
  • Save the Villain: When Tommy and Angelica climb up to the crow's nest, Angelica slips and is about to fall, begging Tommy to save her. Tommy does so, then Angelica reveals that she did this on purpose to trick Tommy and get his treasure.
  • Sword Fight: Tommy and Angelica do this when they come face to face.
  • Toilet Humour:
    • This exchange when the babies dig for the treasure:
    Chuckie: Is this the treasure?
Tommy: No, that's cat poop. Keep digging.
    • Also, this exchange;
Tommy: Hoist the mistlemast! Pull up the anchor! Swab the poop deck!
    Chuckie, Phil, and Lil: Poop?
    (Lil checks her diaper.)
  • Treasure Hunt Episode: The babies pretend to be pirates and search for treasure in this episode.
  • Walk the Plank: After Angelica captures Tommy and the other babies, she makes Tommy do this, but gets caught by Didi before Tommy can take the plunge.
  • Wedgie: When Angelica forces Tommy to walk the plank, she carries him by the back of his diaper with her sword.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: How Angelica wins the sword fight.
