"For crying out loud!"
Written by Miles Luna & Kerry Shawcross
Directed by Kerry Shawcross, Gray G. Haddock & Miles Luna

"Mistral's territory is the widest reaching in the world, you know, and that makes it infinitely harder to protect."
Professor Leonardo Lionheart

Team RNJR and Qrow arrive at Haven Academy and meet its headmaster, Leonardo Lionheart. Meanwhile, Weiss, Blake and Yang are all trying to reach their goals.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Art Shift: The introduction to Haven itself is depicted with 2D still images instead of the usual CG.
  • Bystander Syndrome: When Weiss's pilot flies them away from the distress call, he reasons that others must have also heard the signal and that they can't respond to the distress call because a cargo ship isn't equipped to fight off threats.
  • Call-Back: In Volume 4, Qrow mentioned to Raven that she had someone powerful in her Bandit Clan. He then asked her if she knew where the Spring Maiden was. Now, Qrow reveals that he's figured out that the Spring Maiden is now with the Branwen Tribe.
  • The City Narrows: The initial appearance of Mistral is of a beautiful city that uses every inch of picturesque mountain slopes. However, Qrow warns the kids to stay away from the city's lower levels, and mentions that anything can be bought there for a price.
  • Continuity Nod: In the pilot episode, Ruby tells Ozpin that she learned how to use a sniper-scythe from a teacher, her uncle Qrow. However, once Qrow is introduced, there's no reference to him being a teacher and he instead spends spends his time travelling the world on missions. Here, Leo demands to know why Team RNJR doesn't know all the facts if Qrow's told them about the Relics; Qrow irritably points out there's a reason why he quit teaching, which clarifies his portrayal since entering the show and implies he can't stand filling people in on things they don't know.
  • Cross-Referenced Titles: The Volume 2 episode "Welcome to Beacon" has Haven Academy students arriving at Beacon. In this episode, Beacon Academy students arrive at Haven.
  • Distress Call: Weiss's transport picks up another ship's call for help, a woman crying out that they're under attack, their Huntress is already down and they're not equipped to deal with what is happening.
  • Facepalm: When Qrow brings Oscar back to the house Team RNJR is staying at, he's so drunk that he trips over the arm of the sofa and falls into the cushions instead of lying down. Alerted by the noise from the front door, Ruby storms into the living room to rant about being disturbed. Seeing the state Qrow is in, she slaps a hand to her forehead and asks in a weary voice if he's drunk again.
  • It's Quiet… Too Quiet: When Team RNJR and Qrow enter Haven Academy grounds, they are immediately puzzled by the lack of students or teachers. Jaune cautiously suggests that perhaps school is out, given the time of year, but Qrow disagrees, stating that the absence of people is wrong. He rushes them all towards Lionheart's office, putting them all on combat alert.
  • Once More, with Clarity: The scene of how Oscar and Ozpin meet occurs as The Stinger that closes Volume 4. In that position, it acts as an internal reveal, as Qrow learns for the first time what the audience has known for a while: that Oscar is the new Ozpin. The scene is replayed in the first episode of Volume 5; it's shown to occur after the frustrating meeting between Leo and Qrow, and leads to Qrow's drunk, insensible introduction of Oscar to Team RNJR. This context changes the meeting between Oscar and Qrow from being about the Ozpin reveal into evidence that Qrow's barely able to cope without Ozpin around to guide him.
  • Scenery Porn: At the beginning of the episode, Qrow flings open the doors that lead into the city of Mistral, leaving the kids stunned by the view. The camera spends over a minute panning slowly across lush mountains, picturesque buildings snuggled into the slopes, and lots of people in beautiful, colourful clothing cheerfully going about their business or engaging in quality time with loved ones.
  • Treacherous Advisor: Qrow wants to go after the Spring Maiden immediately. However, Lionheart vetoes that idea, pointing out that the two of them and four students can't confront the entire Branwen Tribe by themselves. Until the Mistral Council is willing to release Huntsmen that they can take on the mission, they're stuck, and the Council is too worried by the possibility of war with Atlas to deal with a bunch of bandits. Qrow is angry with the decision, but has no choice to accept it. Watts later implies that Lionheart wasn't being entirely truthful about the situation, revealing in the process that he had overheard, via an open comm, Qrow's entire conversation with Lionheart about the location of the Spring Maiden; Lionheart knew that the knowledge was leaking to Salem's subordinate throughout the entire meeting.

Oscar: Well. My name is Oscar Pine.
Qrow: Wait for it...
Oscar: But you probably know me as... Professor Ozpin.
