"Sometimes, you just have to stand your ground and fight, no matter what."
Written by Miles Luna & Kerry Shawcross

Ruby: Yang! I've already told you, I'm just not cut out for hand-to-hand. Why can't I just use my beautiful Crescent Rose?
Yang: That's exactly why I wouldn't let you bring it.

Set before Yang and Ruby go to Beacon, Yang tries to teach Ruby how to fight hand-to-hand, but an unexpected guest arrives.

Tropes in this character short include:

  • Badass in Distress: Ruby is an exceptional fighter when she has her weapon, but when the Ursa turns on her while she's weaponless, she freezes in panic. Yang has to rush to her rescue.
  • Call-Forward: Yang tells Ruby that she needs to learn hand to hand combat for when she doesn't have Crescent Rose, and Yang is reliant on her Semblance to win, both are problems that came to a point in volume 3.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Ruby is so dependent on fighting with Crescent Rose that she freezes up when attacked by the Ursa without it.
  • Elite Mook: Compared to other Ursai we've seen before, this one is clearly older, and thus much bigger and smarter. In the first season, set just a few weeks later Yang took on two Ursa almost casually. This one breaks her Aura and nearly kills her.
  • Power-Strain Blackout: Ruby is implied to have little control over her Semblance at this point; the one time it kicks in, it seems to be by accident; she is next seen on the ground, unconscious.
  • Punch Catch: The Ursa attempts this, but Yang's punch is so powerful that its arm explodes before the rest of it follows.
  • Series Continuity Error: Yang's Aura breaks, but she is still able to use her Semblance, despite Semblances being powered by Aura. The writers later admitted this was a mistake.
  • Taking the Bullet: Just before the Ursa attacks Ruby, Yang jumps in front of her. Subverted as Yang ends up taking enough damage from it to gain enough power with her Semblance to take out the Ursa.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: The short begins with the sound of an engine running to a black screen before the action starts. At the very end of the short, the engine can be heard running again, and it's revealed to be Yang racing through Anima on her motorbike. The reflective expression on her face indicates that the short is what she's thinking about as she travels through Anima to reunite with her sister.
