"You were patient, determined, and strong enough to make your dream a reality. Well done, Yang. But did you have to be so rough with my men?"
Raven Branwen

RNJR and Oscar train and discuss Semblances. Meanwhile, Yang confronts her mother while Weiss prepares her own escape.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Cardboard Prison: Upon seeing Yang in the camp and deciding a stealth escape is pointless now, Weiss enlarges her Armor Gigas Summon and breaks out of her cage easily.
  • Character Development: Yang gets her first proper fight scene since the end of Volume 3 and, having taken her father's lessons to heart, has shifted to a more calm and controlled fighting style where brute force is applied more strategically. For instance, near the end of the scene, she launches herself towards Shady Man, who in turn readies a counterattack. In the past, Yang would just have tanked the hit and powered through; now she dodges the incoming strike by using her gun-gauntlet to catapult her over the bandit's head and strike him from behind.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Yang beats the crap out of the bandits without breaking a sweat.
  • Dropping the Bombshell: When Yang defeats all the bandits Shady Man attacked her with, Shady Man tells her that Raven will kill her. Yang tells him that while it's possible, she doubts it because she's Raven's daughter. Shady Man is horrified by the news and concludes that Raven will probably kill him instead.
  • The Glomp: When Weiss escapes from Raven's prison and joins Yang in preparation for fighting their way out of the bandit camp, Vernal interrupts the brawl before it can start, leaving Raven to tell the two girls to join her in her tent for a talk. Before they can do so, Weiss launches herself into Yang's arms, telling her that she missed her. Initially surprised, Yang returns the hug and admits she missed Weiss, too.
  • Internal Reveal: When Yang punches a bandit through a tent, she's shocked to see the collapsed tent reveal Weiss, who is imprisoned in the cell behind it. Weiss is equally startled to see Yang in the bandit camp, but decides to stop her covert attempts to break out of prison and dramatically breaks out of the cell to stand back-to-back with Yang while the bandits surround them. It gives them the opportunity to find out why on earth they're both in the same bandit camp, leading Weiss to learn that her kidnapper is Yang's mother and revealing to Yang that her mother kidnapped one of her closest friends.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • When Shady Man realises that he just tried to beat up his boss's daughter, he's horrified and moans that Raven will probably kill him.
    • When Ruby celebrates her first successful KO of Oscar in hand-to-hand combat training, Ozpin tells Oscar what he did wrong, then takes control of Oscar's body to point out to Ruby that Oscar doesn't have Ruby's years of training... or Ozpin's. When he activates Oscar's Aura, Ruby, Jaune and Nora all look very alarmed; Ruby frantically suggests taking a break rather than fight someone who has thousands of years worth of combat experience.
  • Personality Powers: When Team RNJR realises Oscar doesn't know what a Semblance is, they explain the subject. Ren states that nobody knows whether or not Semblance is connected to personality; some people theorise that the power is based on the personality, some people theorise that the personality is based on the power, and other people don't think there's any connection between the two. Semblance is therefore something of a puzzle to the people of Remnant.
  • The Reveal: Yang reveals that Raven's Semblance is the ability to create a portal to people she's bonded to; she's gone in search of Raven solely to make use of the power to find Qrow and Ruby as fast as possible.
  • So Much for Stealth: When Yang enters Raven's camp and distracts everybody, Weiss takes the opportunity to quietly work on her escape while no one is watching. After her cover gets blown by Yang punching a guy through a tent that's hiding her cell, Weiss decides subtlety is out and summons her Knight clone to shatter the cell into matchsticks.
  • So Proud of You: Raven makes it clear how pleased she is that Yang found the Branwen Tribe's camp. She doesn't even mind that Yang beat up some of her bandits on the way in.
  • Thinking Up Portals: Raven's Semblance allows her create portals to individuals with whom she's bonded. She has three known portals that connect her to her brother, her former husband and her daughter.

Weiss: I missed you so much.
Yang: I've missed you, too.
