It's not often you get a second chance to say goodbye.

When Kiawe relates having met her grandfather at the Ruins of Hope, Hapu speaks of Tapu Fini's rumored ability to summon spirits. This results in her, Ash, Mallow, and Gladion going on a completely different kind of journey.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Cry into Chest: When Mallow finally hugs her mother, she breaks down sobbing into her arms and apologizing for the cruel words she gave.
  • Dead Person Conversation: Tapu Fini's mist lets the living speak to the dead. Torracat learns Fire Blast from its mentor Stoutland and Mallow's mother forgives her for saying she hated her.
  • Flashback: A good portion of the episode shows the circumstances behind the death of Mallow's mother, as well as her catching Bounsweet (now Tsareena) for Mallow.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Long-time viewers may recognize the flowers that bloom as Gracideas, which are associated with Shaymin.
  • Forgiveness: When she was little, Mallow snapped at her mother while she was on her death bed and ran off in tears, which ended up being the last time she saw her mother alive. Because of her actions, Mallow didn't want to see her mother and believes that she can't face her. Deep down, however, Mallow does want to see her mother and ends up getting that chance to make amends by apologizing to her. While expressing her gratitude towards her mother, Mallow is also able to forgive herself as well.
  • It Was a Gift: It is revealed that Bounsweet was caught for Mallow by her mother shortly before her death.
  • Meaningful Look: When Hapu explains that Tapu Fini's mist can summon the spirits of the departed, Lana gives Mallow a sympathetic look. It makes sense that since they've been BFF's since childhood, Lana would know about Mallow's past better than anyone else.
  • Never Say "Die":
    • Averted in Japanese, given that the source material involves characters reuniting with loved ones who have died. Played straight in the English dub, which never directly uses the word "die" in this episode, but still gets the point across by using substitutes like "departed" or "no longer of this world", and later having Hapu explicitly say that Mohn is alive.
    • Zigzagged in regards to Stoutland, whose death is definitively confirmed in this episode, but Ash doesn't verbally acknowledge it in either Japanese or English, instead saying it doesn't matter "how" it's back so long as Torracat gets to see it again.
  • Not Quite Dead: When Mohn fails to show up in Tapu Fini's mist for Gladion, Hapu reasons that means he has to be alive somewhere.
  • Olympus Mons: A Shaymin, attracted by the Gracideas blooming from the spiritual event, appears before Mallow. It sticks as her Guest-Star Party Member until the end of the series.
  • Parting-Words Regret: The reason why Mallow is reluctant to seek the spirit of her mother is that while her mother was dying, Mallow got frustrated because her mother was always apologizing for getting sick, and told her that she hated her on her death bed. When she got older and realized how severe that was, it became a major source of shame for her.
  • Physical God: A Land Forme Shaymin comes under Mallow's care in this episode. Naturally, Rotom is shocked the Mythical Pokemon appeared in front of her at all.
  • Posthumous Character: Mallow's mother is confirmed to have died years before the events of the series.
  • The Power of Love: The reconciliation of Mallow and her mom not only causes a field of Gracideas to bloom, it attracts a Shaymin (known as the Gratitude Pokemon)!
  • Psychopomp: Tapu Fini plays this role.
  • Seasonal Baggage: Flower petals float through the air during the reunion of Mallow and her mother.
  • Secret Test of Character: Tapu Fini used this episode to test Hapu's determination, and at the end of the episode it accepts Hapu as the new Island Kahuna for Poni Island.
  • So Proud of You:
    • The spirit of Stoutland is pleased with Torracat's development with Ash, and is able to see Torracat learn Fire Blast over Ember.
    • Mallow is able to reconcile with her mother.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Torracat learns Fire Blast.
  • Unexpectedly Dark Episode: The main plot focuses on Mallow coming to terms with the death of her mother prior to the events of the story, and Hapu also coming to terms with the death of her grandfather Sofu, the previous Island Kahuna. The previously-mentioned Stoutland also makes an appearance as an apparition; and the episode is very light on humor as the themes of grief and forgiveness are very realistically Played for Drama.
