Tropes

  • Advanced Tech 2000: The Gloominator 3000... inator.
  • Ancient Grome: Lampshaded by Ferb, which ties in with the previous episode:
Ferb: You know, gladiators were Roman, not Greek.
  • Creator's Culture Carryover: Ferb says "And that is why I never wear suspenders in public", despite him being British and most Brits would call suspenders "braces".
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Doof's invention of the day is the Gloominator 3000... inator. It's especially hilarious when you watch Doof's face when he realizes he said "inator" twice.
  • Freudian Excuse: Lulu Busting Jones, the show's host, started her show because her own brothers were little terrors, breaking plates and scratching records, with their mother never believing Lulu when she tried to tell her.
  • Hero Stole My Bike: Doofenshmirtz and Perry's chase sequence down the street, played with to highlight the difference between hero and villain. Doofenshmirtz also later steals the Bust 'Em! van.
Boy: Hey, that evil scientist just stole my bike!
Girl: Hey, that nice duck just gave me 20 bucks for my skateboard!
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: In his haste to escape, Doofenshmirtz accidentally drives the "Bust 'Em" van into the tornado he created with the Gloominator 3000-inator.
  • Impact Silhouette: At one point, Phineas, Ferb, and Isabella leave brief ones by flying through a waterfall.
  • In Medias Res: This episode begins right at the ending of yet another failed busting attempt by Candace.
  • Incredibly Obvious Bug: Lulu attempts to record footage of the waterslide by giving Candace a "secret hidden camera" (really a giant camera strapped to a bicycle helmet), but Phineas takes it off, saying "you might get this wet". Lulu tries again, disguising the camera inside a giant cowboy hat. Despite it still being obvious, this time, no one notices or does anything about the camera.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Candace notices some recurring patterns in her summer days and complains that her life is like a bad sitcom.
  • "Metaphor" Is My Middle Name: Lulu tells Candace that "Busting" literally is her middle name and pulls out her driver's license to prove it.
  • Modesty Towel: Perry doesn't normally wear clothes, and yet, after using the shower to enter his lair, he still covers his lower half with a towel.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: When the Bust 'Em! van arrives at the house, Candace tells Phineas and Ferb to "just keep doing... whatever it is you guys do." Lampshaded by Phineas:
Phineas: That seemed oddly out of character.
  • Pull a Rabbit out of My Hat: Doofenshmirtz attempts this trick during his 7th grade magician show, but instead of pulling out a rabbit, he pulls out a skunk (which ends up sabotaging the rest of the act). Later in the episode, Perry the Platypus grabs Doof's hat, and out pops a rabbit. Then, he cocks it like a gun and starts shooting lots of rabbits out of the hat, causing Doof's hot-air balloon to lose altitude.
  • Sdrawkcab Speech: The extraterrestrial riding the ferris wheel says, "Erimnevop Yelsgnik Leinad", which is backwards talk for Daniel Kingsley Povenmire (Dan Povenmire's full name).
  • Shout-Out: Lulu has "Bust" and "Them" tattooed on her knuckles ala Harry Powell.
  • Show Within a Show: Bust 'Em!
  • Special Guest: Vicki Lewis (NewsRadio) voices Lulu Jones.
  • Staggered Zoom: Seen on Candace the second time she rides the water slide.
  • The Stinger: Doofenshmirtz is still inside the Bust 'Em! van in the tornado caused by his Gloominator 3000-inator, then decides to turn into a skid but falls over the farmer's wife while she's scolding him for selling their bunny farm, buying a van rental place and not buying a single van. Then Doofenshmirtz in the van is about to fall on the wife. After the wife says "Not one word," the screen goes black and a crash is heard.
  • Strictly Formula: One of the earliest episodes to explicitly lampshade the show's formula, with Candace having noticed how every day ends exactly the same, to the point where she can call out what everyone says and when.
Candace: "Why don't you come in for snacks?"
Linda: Why don't you come in for some snacks?
Candace: "Oh, there you are, Perry."
Phineas: Oh, there you are, Perry!
    Candace: And Ferb says...
    [...]
Linda: So, kids, keeping cool today?
    Candace: "Hi, Mom."
    Phineas: Hi, Mom!
Candace: "Oh, there you are, Perry."
Phineas: Oh, there you are, Perry!
    Candace: And Ferb says...
    Candace: "Now for some snacks."
Linda: Why don't you come in for some pie?
Candace: Yeah, I'll take some pie.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • The farmer's wife berates him for setting up a rabbit farm without buying any rabbits, saying, "What did you think, that rabbits would just fall out of the sky?" Immediately afterwards, a few rabbits do fall out of the sky and land on her hands, before Doofenshmirtz's balloon full of rabbits lands on top of her.
Farmer: Looks like somebody owes me an apology.
      Farmer's wife: Touché.
    • This happens again in The Stinger, where the farmer sold the bunny farm to start a van rental business. His wife tells him off for not getting any vans for the business, and conveniently enough, the tornado that picked up the Bust ‘Em! van that Doofenshmirtz is in drops it on her at that moment.
      Farmer's wife: Not one word.
  • The Voiceless: Buford and Baljeet appear but have no lines.
  • Weather-Control Machine: Doofenshmirtz's evil scheme for this episode is the Gloominator 3000-inator, a machine that allows him to alter the weather by firing special weather pellets. He plans to plunge the Tri-State Area into a new ice age.
  • Welcome to My World: Candace says this word-for-word when Lulu is shocked that the water slide vanished.
  • Yiddish as a Second Language: Major Monogram says that the beautiful weather is enough to make Doofenshmirtz "a little verklemt."
