  • Malicious Misnaming: When Major Donald MacDonald calls Chief Bird "Chief-Bird-Who-Sings-In-the-Evening", Young Ian tells Major MacDonald that Chief Bird's full name is Chief-Bird-Who-Sings-In-the-Morning (Tsiskwa Sunale Dekanogisgi). Major MacDonald grumbles that why don't the Cherokee just take Christian names. Young Ian snarks that the Major would like the Cherokee to have simple names like his own: Donald, son of Donald.
  • The Peeping Tom: Malva spies on Claire and Jamie having sex in the barn and sees the scars on Jamie's back.
  • Raised by the Community: Young Ian asks Kaheroton if he is raising Johiehon's daughter. Kaheroton tells Young Ian that the village will raise her, but the baby will live with Johiehon's sister.

Additionally, Tsotehweh tells Young Ian that Wahionhaweh's mother chose Kaheroton for her. When Wahionhaweh speaks to Young Ian about this, she is sorrowful but tells him that it must be. Before the duel, Kaheroton gives Young Ian his wampum bracelet and tells him to go back to Wahionhaweh if he dies. Young Ian notices that the wampum bracelet, a token of Wahionhaweh's affection, is nearly identical to his, realizing Wahionhaweh and Kaheroton may be in love.

  • Ten Paces and Turn: Before Jamie counts to three to start the duel, Scotchee Cameron turns early and is about to shoot Kaheroton until Young Ian throws Kaheroton’s war club at Scotchee, knocking the gun from his hand. Scotchee begs Kaheroton not to shoot, which Kaheroton accepts, not before calling him a coward and letting him live with his shame.
  • Tragic Stillbirth: When Wahionhaweh was married to Young Ian, she suffered pregnancy losses. These resulted in Young Ian's banishment from the Mohawk and her remarriage to Kaheroton.
