Recap / 9-1-1 S2E12 "Chimney Begins"

Go To

As he bleeds out from being stabbed by Doug, Chimney recalls how he joined the 118 and grew into the firefighter/paramedic he is now.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Chimney
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Eli tells Chimney before his first time out in the field that this is a "be careful what you wish for" situation.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Chimney saving everyone from the bar before it went up in flames is his inspirational moment for deciding to become a firefighter.
  • Foreshadowing: During training, Chimney and Lee's instructor tells them "never cross-country (running across a burning roof) on impulse." Lee loses his life doing this, though for noble reasons.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Lee falls through a hole in the roof to keep a woman from falling through.
  • It Will Never Catch On: Chimney tries to get a loan for a business that will sell sleeved blankets a few years before the Snuggie became a major success. The loan manager rejects his application equating it to the other more outlandish ideas he has brought her before.
  • My Life Flashed Before My Eyes: the entire episode can be seen as this, given that it occurs right after Chimney gets stabbed.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Captain Vincent Gerrard, Hen's and Chimney's first captain, while a firefighter, treats the Korean Chimney in a similar manner that he treated Hen when she was first hired. He and the rest of the team shaft Chim with clean up duty and generally ignoring him.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: When learning that the floor collapse caused a gas leak (hence all the victims's complaining about migraines), Chim rushes in to save a fellow firefighter who was knocked out by the gas after thier racist captain refused to listen to him.
  • Smooch of Victory: Chimney gets a big one from Tina (Brittany Gandy), one of the female bar patrons he was chatting with earlier that night, after saving everyone from the bar on fire.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: A male version. Chimney gets stuck with cleaning the firehouse top to bottom as part of his recruitment hazing, as well as Captain Vincent being a racist.
  • Training Montage: Chimney and Lee go through grueling firefighter training before they graduate.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: A hot-shot-but-not-too-bright bartender tries to light a whole tower of shots on fire, but instead lights the woman in front of him on fire and burns the whole bar down. Whoops.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: One unlucky patient pukes all over Chim in the ambulance. He wonders where it's all coming from.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: This episode shows Chimney went from a lost figure coming up with hopeless "get rich quick" schemes to the serious paramedic we know.
