Bon Bon, aren't you supposed to be playing sick, not dead?

Original air date: July 10th, 1992

Bon Bon is brushing her hair in preparation for her father taking her to the cinema... but then, there's a loud noise from her baby brother's room, and it breaks her mirror. She and her other younger siblings go to see what the noise was, and their father tells them that their brother has caught a bad cold, and that he can no longer take Bon Bon to the cinema.

Bon Bon asks her mother, then her older sister Misty, to braid her hair, but they decline as they're too busy helping tend to Baby Pony. Her younger brother Rusty won't play with her for the same reason.

Bon Bon gets the idea to pretend to be sick so that her family will give her the attention she craves. She soon comes to regret it, however, when Starlight, Patch, and finally Melody phone her residence to ask if she can hang out with them, which she of course can't.

Things get increasingly more hectic in the house with an extra pony to tend to. After having her family dote on her for long enough, Bon Bon feels bad enough about her actions to write about it in her diary, and then admit to her parents that she was faking it. Though they aren't pleased about her lying to them, they are relieved she's feeling well.

Bon Bon resolves to make it up to them by helping to take care of her baby brother. But then, all of a sudden, one by one, her family members all feel sick. Bon Bon sits them all on the couch, and sets to work tending to them.

"Too Sick To Notice" provides examples of:

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Bon Bon pets Amber with something she was using to apply her makeup.
  • Annoying Patient: Bon Bon makes her sister Amber take away the orange juice she brought her and bring her apple juice instead (after Bon Bon already said she wanted apple juice), has the nerve to scold Amber and Twink for making a mess when the only reason they collided into each other in the first place was because Bon Bon was running them ragged, and asks her dad to go back to the store in the rain to get her the latest Pony Beat magazine when he brings her last month's edition.
  • Aside Glance: Bon Bon looks at the viewer at the end of her song as she winks.
  • Attack the Tail: Bon Bon gets Misty's attention by pulling her tail.
  • Attention Whore: Bon Bon is so jealous of all the attention Baby Pony is getting because he's sick that she pretends to be sick herself.
  • Bottle Episode: The entire episode takes place in Bon Bon's house.
  • Bratty Food Demand: Bon Bon tells Amber she wants apple juice, then changes her mind to orange juice, then finally changes her mind again right back to apple juice.
  • Bridal Carry: Bon Bon has her father carry her to the couch as part of her sickness ruse.
  • Callousness Towards Emergency: Discussed; during her song, Bon Bon imagines herself fainting and her family ignoring it.
  • Contrived Coincidence: No less than three of Bon Bon's friends phone her home (and all in very quick succession of each other) to see if she can hang out right after she's decided to pretend to be sick.
  • Death Glare: Amber and Twink give this to Bon Bon when she scolds them for colliding into each other and making a mess when she was the reason they were in such a frenzy in the first place.
  • Easily Forgiven: Bon Bon's parents don't seem the least bit angry with her for lying and making her family wait on her. Her dad briefly says they're not pleased about it, but otherwise they simply express relief that she's not sick and reaffirm their love for her. It's not as if they need to scold her or anything, right?
  • Flowers of Romance: A platonic example occurs at the end when Starlight shows up with a bouquet of flowers for Bon Bon, having been told that she's sick.
  • Glass-Shattering Sound: Baby Pony's sneezing (from the other room, even!) is loud enough to shatter Bon Bon's mirror.
  • Honesty Aesop: It is wrong to pretend to be sick just for attention, as well as to overwork your caretakers with excessive demands.
  • Illness Blanket: Bon Bon lies under a blanket on the sofa while pretending to be sick. At the end, the rest of her family either lie on the sofa or sit in a chair with a blanket draped over them.
  • It's All About Me: When her baby brother being sick means Bon Bon can't go to the cinema or have her hair braided, she pretends to be sick in order to get attention from her family.
  • "I Want" Song: "A Little Attention" is about Bon Bon wanting the attention her sick baby brother is getting, and deciding to pretend to be sick herself to this end.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Bon Bon gets this in spades for playing sick and overworking her family. Starlight, Patch, and Melody all phone up to ask if she can accompany them to the cinema, rollerskating, or a Cleveland Bays concert respectively, only for Misty to answer that Bon Bon is too sick. Later, the rest of the family all get sick, and so she has to take care of them (though she doesn't seem too upset about it). And in the following episode, "Battle of the Bands", she's grounded, which may have been for playing sick in this episode.
  • Must Make Amends: Bon Bon decides to help take care of Baby Pony after she confesses to her parents she wasn't really sick.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Bon Bon eventually has this over how hard her family is working when she's not really sick.
  • My New Gift Is Lame: In a sense. Bon Bon's father brings her something. She thinks it's a present, but it's not really, it's her medicine, and she's visibly disappointed.
  • No Name Given: Since Bon Bon's sick baby brother is simply referred to as "baby pony", we never learn his real name.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: When Bon Bon is feeling bad about pretending to be sick, and looks over at her baby brother in his crib:
Bon Bon: I've been a bad baby...
Baby Pony: (laughs and throws a sheep toy to the floor) Baa!
Bon Bon: You don't have to rub it in...
  • One-Shot Character: Amber is the only one of Bon Bon's siblings to appear again after this episode (in "Gribet"). Misty, Rusty, Twink, and Baby Pony are never heard from again.
  • Playing Sick: Bon Bon feels ignored by her family when her youngest brother gets sick, so she decides to pretend she's sick too. At first she enjoys it, then regrets it when she is forced to stay in bed all day while her friends have fun outside and her family gets more and more stressed by her ever increasing demands. Wracked with guilt, she confesses. Her family seems to forgive her, but then they all claim that they are sick and force her to care for them.
  • P.O.V. Cam: From Bon Bon's perspective when she falls over and her family look over her in concern.
  • Rule of Three: Bon Bon says Misty's name three times when trying to get her attention.
  • Sneeze of Doom: Baby Pony's sneezing breaks Bon Bon's mirror and destroys a pillow, sending feather flying everywhere.
  • Verbal Backspace:
Bon Bon: And for dinner, I'll make my, uh, your favorite dessert!
  • Your Favorite: Bon Bon promises her parents she'll make them their favorite dessert... although she initially says it'll be her favorite before correcting herself.
