Recap / My Gym Partners A Monkey S 2 E 2 I Got A New Aptitude

Go To

The career aptitude test happens at CDMS, and everyone (except Adam and Jake) hopes they'll get "Zoo Animal" as their results. Adam and Jake on the other hand, want to be a firefighting space walking president and a model in underwear commercials, respectively.

  • An Aesop: Follow your dreams.
  • Anvil on Head: Jake gets crushed by a safe, that drops from the sky.
  • Buffy Speak: Adam's hobo name was "Adam Hobo Person Guy".
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: Mr. Mandrill, when motivating Adam to follow his dreams.
Adam: So, you think I should find a different career?
Mr. Mandrill: I mean, you should follow your heart.
Adam: So, find a different career.
Mr. Mandrill: Yes, fine. I was trying to be poetic.
  • Failure Montage: Adam tries to get jobs at a fire station, a space station, and The White House. All of these end up with the same result, getting instantly fired.
  • Foreshadowing: Although the career aptitude tests were fixed, they all ended up being true in the long run. As we saw in the series finale, everybody in the school, and unfortunately Adam, all end up being zoo animals.
  • Free-Range Children: Not only did Adam skip town to become a train-riding hobo, but he also traveled all the way to Washington D.C. and attempted to leave the Earth's atmosphere, without his parents saying or doing a thing.
  • Fun with Homophones: A bunch of "Lyon" and "Lion" jokes in this episode.
  • Grief Song: "What's the Point?"
  • Inept Aptitude Test: The central focus of this episode.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Adam and Jake hint at some self-awareness of the show's formula and how it activates their crazy adventures every episode.
Jake: Morning, Adam. What sort of fun filled adventure do we have in store, today?
Adam: Nothing that I know of.
Jake: Eh, give it a minute.
  • The Man Is Keeping Us Down: Mr. Mandrill rambles about the oppressive, and rather meaningless aptitude test. He says this quote exactly that whatever the test tells him his career is, is "Just the man keeping you down."
  • Negative Continuity: Even though Larry Raccoon was permanently expelled in "Bad News Bear", he made a background cameo in Miss Chameleon's class.
  • Out of Focus: Although Adam and Jake were going through the same conflict in the episode, the plot took a bit of a detour to focus only on Adam and his job hunting, before bringing Jake back into the story again.
  • Pursue the Dream Job: Adam and Jake's stories in this episode, when they learned they were destined to be zoo animals.
  • Ridiculously Successful Future Self: Adam thinks he'll grow up to be an astronaut, a fire fighter, and the president.
  • Running Gag: People getting mauled by a lion.
  • Sad-Times Montage: This episode featured arguably one of the saddest moments of the series ... sort of.
Singing Voice: Sadness is the emotion that Jake and Adam are feeling.
  • The Shadow Knows: While dramatically ranting about her life being a failure, Miss Chameleon's shadow resembled a human version of herself.
  • Spoof Aesop: During the ending credits, we get a sophisticated lion giving a very special PSA on lion stereotypes in media, and how to avoid them.
  • Toilet Humour: Lupe attempts to poop on her test.
Miss Chameleon: (ahem!) With a number two, pencil, Lupe!
  • Where the Hell Is Springfield?: The parody dollar bill that Adam appears on, has "Burbank.CA" in the place where "Washington.DC" would usually go, implying that My Gym Partner's a Monkey takes place in Burbank, California (a suburb of Los Angeles).
    • However, in "Knights of the Multiplication Table", Phineas implies that they live in Glendale (which is also a suburb of Los Angeles). Either way, the show takes place in California (presumably somewhere in the Los Angeles-area of Southern California).
  • Wizard Beard: Adam and Jake grow these, after their montage.
