Recap / Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur 2023 S 2 E 9 In The Heist

Go To

Lunella and her classmates must outwit a snooty museum docent to heist a powerful Kree artifact before it destroys the city.

  • Acronymonious : Adding an "A" note  to STEM to spell "STEAM" is, in itself, not too bad, but Coach Hrbek probably shouldn't have dubbed the kids his "steamers" note .
  • Ambiguously Bi: Jurnee has a bi heart sticker on her phone.
  • A Day in the Limelight: After being introduced on the side in the seventh episode of the season, the STEM crew gets a proper episode focused on them alongside Lunella, Anand in particular getting a good bit of focus after being a minor character in the first season.
  • "Blackmail" Is Such an Ugly Word: When Laser-Guided Karma hits Dr. Stern for his hate on children.
Donny: No offence Dr. Stern, but I'm not sure you're qualified for the line of work, man. A lot of children come in museums and well...you kind of..."hate" might be a strong word. But...
Dani: Time for you to go, Dr. Stern.
  • Call-Back: In order to help Anand handle his constant fear of things going wrong for them during the heist due to them just being kids, Lunella relays the lesson Mimi taught her to handle her own fears from the second episode of the season.
  • Cassandra Truth: Despite warning him about the true dangers of the crystal, Dr. Stern refuses to believe Lunella and her classmates mainly because they are children. It didn't help that they had to resort to stealing it from the exhibit before it is fully exposed to sunlight. Little did Stern know that one of the students anticipated a setback and they relied on Devil to make a replica to switch with before the doctor caught them. They then exploit this trope to avoid getting in trouble when the replica is spotted in the exhibit without further suspicion.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: When Lunella calls Mel-Varr to ask about the Crystal of Karwar in the museum, Mel-Varr's in the middle of P.E. class... which consists of dodging laser fire and the "death moat obstacle course"
  • Child Hater: Dr. Stern, whose hatred for kids causes him to treat them badly and eventually gets him fired.
  • Control Freak: Dr. Stern has massive shades of this, as he made a whole lot of rules for museum etiquette such as "no looking at the art for too long" note  and "breath in short bursts through the nose".
  • Disabled Snarker:
Dr. Stern: I guess we'll take the stairs.
Eli: (from his wheelchair) Will we, though?
  • Doomsday Device: The crystal on display at the museum, believed to be an artifact from India, is actually a Kree device that absorbs stellar radiation to generate natural disasters, which is used for the Kree celebration of battle "Bloodvember". If Lunella doesn't get it into containment before it reaches full power, it will generate cataclysmic events powerful enough to sink all of Manhattan.
  • Genre Savvy: Cecilia is instrumental to planning the heist due to her love of heist movies.
  • Grammar Nazi: Anand insists that "exhibit" is a verb and "exhibition" is a noun.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his brutish appearance and great size, Devil is shown to be a lover of fine art, and even holds an annual pass to the local museum.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Upon seeing the elevator to the break room is packed with items, Dr. Stern tells the STEM kids that they'll be taking the stairs... Only for a heads up from the wheelchair-bound Eli to remind the doctor of his status, much to Dr. Stern's awkward concern.
  • Insult Backfire: When Lunella tells Anand that he could end up like Dr. Stern in the future, Anand dreamily says he wishes.
  • Ironic Echo: When Lunella tries to explain that the Crystal of Karwar is a Doomsday Device, Dr. Stern brushes her off, saying that he doesn't buy into her "make-believe". When he tries to explain to Coach Hrbek about the heist, Lunella and Anand claim that the heist was all "make-believe."
  • Just a Kid: Anand's primary worry during the heist, worrying that a group of kids wouldn't be able to do something as significant as a world-saving museum heist. It comes down to Lunella to help him overcome this worry.
  • Once More, with Clarity: After Dr. Stern and the guards find the crystal back in the exhibit seemingly untouched, Cecilla outright invokes this to reveal to the audience the full picture of the heist: In particular, the part where Devil creates a replica crystal to swap with the real one as Anand passed by him, with Anand setting up said replica in the elevator for Eli to secretly snag on the way up to the break room where the students were detained. And while Devil contained the real crystal back at the lab's Boom Locker just in time to prevent disaster, the students would return the fake crystal with a hatch in the break room to make it seem like there was no heist to begin with.
  • Race Against the Clock: Lunella has to get the crystal on display into containment before the sunlight through the window shifts to hit it directly and give it a full charge to destroy Manhattan.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Though they were unaware that the crystal got replaced with a fake, the guards (Donny and Dani) do have a point when they point out that Dr. Stern's extreme dislike for children is completely unreasonable, especially at the fact that many kids come to museums mainly to learn and interact with some exhibits. Naturally, Dr. Stern gets the boot.
  • Shout-Out: The title is a reference to the musical In the Heights.
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee: Downplayed, as while the initial part of the heist is shown being planned out and explained, the audience isn't given the full picture, along with one more crucial member, until the heist has been complete, as detailed above in Once More, with Clarity.
  • Villain Respect: Stern genuinely respects Devil as an annual pass-holder and a true aficionado of the arts.
  • Villainy-Free Villain: Stern is the closest thing to a villain this episode with his worst quality being an insufferable Child Hater.
