Lunella brings a hamster named Angel home from school who quickly becomes the center of both her and Casey’s attention. But when Angel ends up escaping into the city, Devil must contend with both his jealousy and the rodent army of the Rat King to get him back.

Tropes:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: The Rat King uses a lot of alliteration in his dialogue. While swearing revenge upon his defeat he gets frustrated keeping it up and drops it.
  • Amplified Animal Aptitude: Zigzagged. While Devil, Angel, and the Rat King's rats are smart enough to communicate with sapient beings and coordinate to fight supers, the squirrels and pigeon Devil meets only talk about acorns and French fries.
  • An Aesop: Bringing new people into your life doesn't lessen your love for the people who are already there.
  • Animal Talk:
    • Devil is shown to be able to communicate with other species of animals while searching for Angel. It is not, however, translated for the audience.
    • When Lunella attempts to free Angel, she says that she doesn't speak hamster, but may be able to within an hour of an unexplained method.
  • Art Shift: Casey's account of what she thinks happened to Angel is illustrated as a shoujo manga.
  • Blue with Shock: Devil reacts this way when he hears the girls talk about how much they love Angel.
  • Call-Back: Lunella brings up Pops' belief that giant lizards live in the sewer, which was mentioned back in the series premiere.
  • Company Cross References: Upon seeing the rats raid the pizzeria, Lunella comments that “they looked way cuter in that movie about the rat-chef.”
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: By the end of the episode, Devil is shocked to learn that Angel's stay with Lunella is only for the weekend and Lunella realized she forgot to mention that part to Devil who thought Angel was staying with them permanently, who now feels foolish for his behavior. Had Lunella mentioned this fact earlier, Devil wouldn't have felt insecure about Angel's stay.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Lunella and Casey can't stop cooing over Angel.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The first Devil-focused episode.
  • Disney Villain Death: Rat King falls off a ledge and into the sewer below. At the end of the episode, however, his arm rises from the water.
  • Face Your Fears: When Moon Girl ends up the Rat King's prisoner, Angel escapes and goes for help. He's shown throughout the episode to be terrified of Devil (which makes sense, as Devil is a gigantic red dinosaur who doesn't like the hamster), but works through his fear when he sees that the dinosaur cares about Lunella more than anything else.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Devil quickly becomes jealous of Angel and the attention and affection Lunella and Casey lavish upon him.
  • Keep Away: Moon Girl drops her tape recorder when she is trapped. As she tries to get it back to use it against the rats, said rats grab it and try to keep her and Devil from getting it back.
  • I Lied: Rat King promises Angel that he will protect him from Devil. Really, he uses the little hamster as bait for Lunella.
  • Metaphorically True: When they discover Devil and Angel missing, Casey theorizes that a villain decided to trespass in the lair to abduct Angel, leading to Devil trying to save the hamster. In actuality, Devil accidentally scares away Angel, eventually skittering to Rat King's clutches.
  • Nightmare Sequence: Devil has a nightmare where Angel replaces him in Lunella’s life - in the form of an edited version of the theme song.
  • Obsessed with Food:
    • Devil tries asking a pair of squirrels about Angel, but they only respond with questions about nuts. He tries asking a passing pigeon, but it's only interested in french fries. The three animals then chatter back and forth about food until Devil roars in frustration.
    • The Rat King himself is motivated entirely by getting pizza.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Moon Girl and Devil have their first fight in this episode (over Devil losing Angel and lying about it). They make up by the end of the episode, with Lunella realizing it was their first fight since meeting.
  • Poor Communication Kills: As stated above, a lot of issues (or maybe all of them) could have been avoided had Lunella thought to tell Devil that she was only watching Angel for the weekend.
  • Rebus Bubble: How Animal Talk is translated for the audience. For example, Devil asking two squirrels if they've seen Angel is visualized as two eyes, a hamster, and a question mark.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Devil briefly considers buying another hamster and passing it off as Angel, but imagines Lunella making a DNA match to expose it as a fake and throwing Devil out on the street as a result.
  • Rube Goldberg Device: Moon Girl activates one in the Rat King's lair, which ends with a giant mallet slowly lowered over her. Moon Girl is not impressed and simply steps aside, but it turns out the mallet activates the last stage of the trap, a net that hoists up and traps Moon Girl.
  • Shapes of Disappearance: Devil realizes that Angel's cage is gone when he looks at where it was last night and only sees a flashing dotted outline of the cage.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Trademark Favorite Food: After fighting with Moon Girl, Devil Dinosaur goes to a hot dog cart and binges on sausages. Doubles as Comfort Food.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Lunella forgetting about movie night and paying more attention to Angel, along with her not bothering to tell Devil that Angel's only staying the weekend, is what leads to Devil's insecurities and thus, forms the episode's plot.
  • Waxing Lyrical: The Rat King tells his minions to drop Moon Girl to her death by quoting Snoop Dogg. Moon Girl later quotes the same as an Ironic Echo.
Rat King: Drop her, as they say, like it's hot.
