Recap / Mickey Mouse S 5 E 7 For Whom The Booth Tolls

Go To

"For Whom The Booth Tolls" is the 8th episode of Season 5 of the new Mickey Mouse (2013) series created by Paul Rudish for the Disney Channel and Disney.com. It is the 85th in the series.

On their way to the park, Mickey and Minnie come upon a tollbooth... only Mickey forgot to bring change! Minnie resolves the situation by giving the booth one of Mickey's pants buttons instead, but now Mickey is wracked with guilt; and everywhere he goes, he thinks he sees the tollbooth waiting for him. Of course, Mickey's just seeing things... or is he?

Tropes:

  • Animate Inanimate Object: The menacing tollbooth comes to life and goes after Mickey.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Minnie’s brick of gold. It’s useless when passing through the tollbooth, but she later uses it to buy a balloon and get the change needed to appease the tollbooth.
  • Determinator: The tollbooth will stop at absolutely nothing to get that one quarter from Mickey.
  • Gratuitous French: The place Mickey and Minnie are going to is called Sans Souci Gardens. Sans souci stands for "carefree" (or as Minnie puts it, worry-free date"). It turns out to be anything but this for poor Mickey.
  • Homage: To Alfred Hitchcock thrillers. There's even a Hitchcock character in the crowd, in reference to his famous cameo appearances.
  • Mythology Gag: Minnie whistles "Minnie's Yoo-Hoo" while at the park.
  • Real After All: At first, the tollbooth's appearances are implied to just being a product of Mickey's guilty conscience. But then Minnie sees it rising from behind them in the trolley.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: The tollbooth's windows glow bright red after getting the fake coin. Also, the headlamps on the trolley and the destination sign on the trolley when the tollbooth takes it over.
  • The Scream: Mickey and Minnie's reaction when they see the tollbooth rev its arm like a chainsaw on the trolley.
  • Shout-Out: There's a (possibly bootlegged) VHS cassette of The Black Cauldron lying forgotten under the seat of Mickey's car.
  • Skeleton Motif: The tollbooth's two windows and coin slot resemble a skull.
