Recap / Mickey Mouse S1 E7 "Gasp!"

Go To

"Gasp!" is one of the season 1 shorts of the new Mickey Mouse (2013) series created by Paul Rudish for the Disney Channel and Disney.com. It's the seventh to both air on the Disney Channel and to be put up on Disney.com.

Mickey drives out a cat from eating his pet goldfish Gubbles, but accidentally shatters Gubbles's bowl. Now Mickey must find a way to keep Gubbles hydrated.

Although not named in this short, the cat is played by Figaro, who frequently appeared in classic Disney shorts, usually as Minnie's pet.

Tropes:

  • All Animals Are Dogs: Gubbles does tricks like a dog, and eats dog treats. Exaggerated when in the last part of the cartoon Gubbles scares Figaro away by barking.
  • All Balloons Have Helium: After Gubbles accidentally cooks himself, Mickey uses mouth-to-mouth on him, blowing him up like a balloon causing him to float upwards briefly.
  • Big Word Shout: "CAT!"
  • Cats Are Mean: Figaro repeatedly sneaks into Mickey's house and tries to eat his pet fish.
  • Chekhov's Skill: The "dog tricks" that Mickey teaches Gubbles.
  • For Inconvenience, Press "1": Mickey inadvertently selects the Spanish option when ordering a new fishbowl on the phone. A second key press produces Scandinavian-sounding gibberish.
  • Funny Background Event: While Mickey is trying to order a new fish bowl, Figaro is trying to get Gubbles out of his bowl in the background.
  • Gasp!: The name of the cartoon!
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: Gubbles right before the end doesn't look too hot at all. You can understand considering all he's been through.
  • High-Pressure Emotion: After Figaro swallows Gubbles, Mickey's whole body turns red in anger.
  • Humiliation Conga: The kitchen sequence for Gubbles. While searching the fridge for water, Mickey accidentally knocks a pan onto the stove and turns it on. Then he unwittingly throws an egg on Gubbles, who then stumbles through breadcrumbs, then butter, then falls face-first into a lemon slice, then stumbles into the frying pan. He rockets off the pan. Next time Mickey sees Gubbles, he looks more like an entrĂ©e than a pet.
  • Kiss of Life: Mickey has to resort to this after Gubbles accidentally ends up sauteed.
  • Medium-Shift Gag: There's a live-action shot of Gubbles cooked, but with cartoony eyes.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: If Mickey hadn't slammed the window shut, Gubbles' bowl wouldn't have shattered.
  • Ribcage Stomach: When Gubbles is swallowed by Figaro. Complete with the skeletons of past piscine meals.
  • Unsound Effect: "Catch!" appears when Figaro snatches Gubbles before he can dive into the tub.
  • Your Princess Is in Another Castle!: Mickey thinks Gubbles is saved when he lands on the faucet of the bathtub. Figaro has other ideas.
