Recap / Miami Vice S 1 E 23 Lombard

Go To

Al Lombard, back from "One Eyed Jack" is annoyed with his son, Salvatore for withdrawing from law school. The Miami Metro break into his yacht but it turns out to be delivering him a court order. Al is going to receive immunity for his crimes if he testifies against crime boss, Librizzi

Lombard has no intention of testifying against Librizzi, however, due to being an old school mafia don. However, Librizzi doesn't believe this and sends hired killers against Lombard. Lombard finds the assassins and kills them but this doesn't reassure him that Librizzi isn't going to kill him so he attempts to get out of town. Unfortunately, his friend, Charlie Fusco has already been offered all of his territory in exchange for betraying him.

After being rescued from an assassination attempt, Lombard ends up in Miami Vice's custody and he attempts to bond with them. Crockett hasn't forgotten his role in his ex-girlfriend's death, though.

  • Affably Evil: Despite being ruthless when the chips are drawn, Lombard is generally charming to his family, associates, and even the Miami Vice squad. Even while under Crockett and Tubbs' protective custody, Lombard treats them to a homemade vermicelli dinner.
  • Artistic License – Law: At least in terms of the mafia, Lombard being a high ranking career mafiso and The Don in Miami would almost certainly be a Made Man. Ordering his execution on the possibility that he might squeal would be a major infraction against the organization.
  • Bolivian Army Ending: Is presumed dead at the end of "Lombard", as he's followed out of a courthouse by Librizzi's henchmen and disappears shortly thereafter.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Lombard is taken aback when Crockett accuses him of murder and requires jogging of his memory to remember the events of "One Eyed Jack."
  • The Don: Librizzi is significantly higher ranked than Lombard, who is himself still a powerful mafia man.
  • Downer Ending: Lombard goes to his probable death protecting a mafia don that is complete scum and refuses to do what his son asked him to.
  • Evil Parents Want Good Kids: Lombard attempted to keep his son out of the mafia and unaware of his business activities.
  • Honor Before Reason: Lombard doesn't want to testify despite it being in his best interest or even because Librizzi wants to kill him because that's the way old school mafia go.
  • Karma Houdini: Lombard avoids being one but only because he refused to do the right thing and testify against Librizzi.
  • The Mafia: Lombard and Librizzi are both members of the Italian mafia.
  • Not Me This Time: Tries to give a half-hearted defense that killing Crockett's ex wasn't his idea and brought down serious heat on the Lombard crime family.
  • Noble Demon: Insists he abibes by a code and refuses to break it even when his life is on the line. Is also a loving father and good friend.
  • Worthy Opponent: Lombard comes to view Crockett this way as he's a man of actual integrity when he thinks of most police as being without such.
