Recap / M*A*S*H S6 E3: Last Laugh

Go To

B.J. is visited by an old college friend, who launches a war of pranks upon arrival. One of them goes a little too far, however, and lands B.J. in trouble with a general. Margaret is desperate to visit Donald in Tokyo, claiming he needs help "relaxing". Klinger adopts an invisible camel.

Attention all personnel! Klinger's Habibi has spit on the following tropes:

  • Anachronism Stew: Hawkeye (slightly mis-)quotes the famous Texaco gas station jingle, "Always trust your car to the man who wears the star." This jingle wasn't created until the early 1960s.
  • Bottomless Fuel Tanks: Averted with the Jeep B.J. offers to Bardonaro as a parting shot:
B.J.: Only thing gassed up in that Jeep was us!
  • Crazy-Prepared: B.J. steals Bardonaro's already lit cigar to ensure he wouldn't get an exploding one. Turns out Bardonaro saw it coming and had lit himself a trick cigar, expecting B.J.'s actions.
  • Electric Joybuzzer: Bardonaro has one as part of his arsenal.
  • Escalating War: Over the course of the episode, Bardonaro and B.J.'s prank war escalates from joy buzzers and exploding cigars to B.J. nearly being court-martialed.
  • Explosive Cigar: Another of Bardonaro's jokes.
  • Hypocritical Humor: B.J. and Bardonaro claim that they're above using joy buzzers and exploding cigars, considering them "kid stuff" – so of course, Bardonaro uses a joy buzzer on Hawkeye.
  • I Have This Friend: Margaret insists that the visit to Donald is for his morale. Her behaviour, however, suggests otherwise.
  • Imaginary Friend: Klinger's latest Section 8 routine involves him dressing in Arabian garb and pretending to have an invisible camel named Habibi.
  • Karma Houdini:
    • Margaret, in her lust-fueled rage, trashes Radar's office and gives him a Literal Ass-Kicking – but faces no disciplinary action and instead is rewarded with her desired leave.
    • Bardanero's only punishment for his actions are the retaliatory pranks that B.J. pulls on him.
  • Noodle Incident: Bardonaro's party at the Grand Central Hotel, complete with girls and teriyaki steaks.
  • Orphaned Punchline: The first scene after the commercial break includes a brief glance of Klinger cleaning up a mess that his imaginary camel made on the floor of Potter's office. Without the setup from earlier in the episode, which usually falls victim to Edited for Syndication, the scene makes considerably less sense.
  • Series Continuity Error: B.J. claims that his friend Bardonaro played a practical joke his wedding and that they both gave up practical joking "ten years ago" (presumably after they both graduated from med school and after B.J.'s wedding). As 1953-10=1943, both B.J. and Bardonaro would have been drafted in World War II; yet Bardonaro wears only Korean War medals on his dress uniform jacket. B.J. never mentions any prior military service over the course of the show, and in his debut episode ("Welcome to Korea") his age is given as 28, which means he would have to have gone to med school at 14 and graduated at 18 at the latest.
  • Unusual Euphemism: General Fox was in a hotel bathtub with his secretary, "dictating" to her.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Margaret orders/threatens Radar to put a call through to Donald to discuss his "relaxation" – only to learn they had a generator burn out and he can't get another frequency till after midnight. Margaret is not thrilled.
    • Played for Laughs by Potter: he explains to Klinger that he brought a discharge from Seoul...for Klinger's imaginary camel.
