Recap / MS Gundam Wing Ep 01 The Shooting Star She Saw

Go To

"I'll kill you."
Heero Yuy, to Relena Darlian

Japanese Title: The Meteor The Girl Saw

Original Airdate: April 7, 1995

US Airdate: March 6, 2000

Relena Darlian, the daughter of an Earth Sphere diplomat returning to Earth from the Colonies, witnesses a space battle involving a unique mobile suit. When she comes home, she finds a new kid who is definitely hiding something. Elsewhere around the world, more mobile suits appear and attack assets of the Earth Sphere's paramilitary agency, the Organization of the Zodiac, OZ.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Driven to Suicide: Heero tries and fails to crash Gundam Wing, washing up on the beach alive and still in his suit. He then tries to fire an explosive charge on his suit, which apparently was designed only to vent his spacesuit while in space, not actually make him explode.
  • Establishing Character Moment: We get moments of this for each of the Gundam pilots. The most telling one is Quatre being the only one to demand the surrender of his quarry before gunning them down as expertly as the other pilots.
  • He Knows Too Much: Heero threatened to kill Relena because she saw his face on the beach.
  • I'll Kill You!: Heero says this to Relena when she invites him, at that point the new kid at her boarding school, to her birthday party. It proves to be an Ineffectual Death Threat.
  • Lost in Translation: Zechs saying "No machineguns for him. Shoot him down!" happens because it's a direct translation. The term "machineguns" is a military slang for firing warning shots. Going for a more general translation could've averted this one, as those unfamiliar with military lingo would probably not understand.
  • Mook Horror Show: Most acute in the montage of the arrival of the other Operation Meteor pilots, as none of them face any real resistance.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: As Heero drives off with the ambulance he just hijacked, Relena just introduces herself as if he were still there, and asks for his name. She doesn't seem too disturbed by the two paramedics he just beat up, or even the fact that he tried to kill himself.
  • Workaholic: Vice Minister Darlian. While the fact that he brings Relena with him averts Parental Abandonment, Free-Range Children, and other tropes associated with a parent choosing work over children, Relena invokes this with him, implying that he still was putting too much into his work.
Relena: Father, next time we go out to space, how about leaving yourself a little bit of free time?
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: May be in play with Heero washing up on the beach. After the ambulance Relena called arrived, he beats up the paramedics and hijacks the ambulance.
  • You Monster!: Invoked by Relena when Heero tears up her invitation to her birthday party, and tells her he will kill her.
