Art by Crash X Fusion: Looks like Teen Eda refused to show up for her picture.

Everything seems to be back to normal for the Clawthornes; Luz ends up making another deal, King goes to find a job, and Eda recounts how she first met Raine.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Accidental Truth: After Luz lies to Andrea about why she has Amity's necklace, Andrea says she had briefly assumed they eloped. Luz sees that as her opportunity to bail.
  • Adaptation Expansion: It wasn't revealed in canon when Faust stepped down as Principal of Hexside and Bump succeeded him; here, it was right after HECK had occurred and was a result of outside help.
  • Always Someone Better: Not only had Eda been this to Lilith in the past, she also turns out to have acted as such to Nicole, answering several questions correctly during Potions class and even correcting an answer Nicole got wrong, to the triclops' fury.
  • Brick Joke: Two intertwine into one. King spends the chapter applying for a job and Eda tells the orphans that she ordered a pizza for them. Guess who delivers said pizza after Eda finishes her story?
  • Broken Pedestal: Eda stopped seeing Vina as her hero after she discredited a quote from her own book by telling Eda she wouldn't make it in the Emperor's Coven. Eda decided that she wouldn't tell Lilith about Vina being a sham, so her sister wouldn't learn the truth until she joined the coven herself.
  • The Bus Came Back: Scandalyn is seen again since her debut in "How Calypso Stole Krampmus", once again via flashbacks.
  • But Now I Must Go: Camila has officially left the Owl House and the Demon Realm to find her own place on Earth and begin a new life in Gravity Falls.
  • Call-Back:
    • For the first time since near the end of Book 1, it's just the original four Owl House residents (and Kay & Maurice) living there since Amity and now Camila are living in the Human Realm, and they know it.
    • Since Luz wouldn't care if he punishes her, Faust threatens to go after Willow, Gus, and Eve for their disappearances, Boscha for her stunt against Lumity, and Cat for "supposedly" starting the Coven Day riot.
    • Gilbert's statement about transferring to Hexside from Glandus in "Prelude to War: Part 1" is elaborated upon.
  • The Cameo:
    • Due to the chapter taking place during "Cat's Jubilee", Amelia, Cat, and Simon are seen when Luz arrives at Hexside.
    • The original Shadowy Secret Exposers appear when the Clawthorne sisters use the Secret Room of Shortcuts to evade Principal Faust in the past. As a result, Adrian Graye appears as Walter Wildes.
  • Colorful Theme Naming: 30 years ago, Dusty called himself 'Orange', which is the color of his uniform.
  • Connected All Along: Bump has known Ms. Traveler since she helped him become Hexside's principal by getting Faust to retire 30 years ago.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Faust's office is still haunted by ghosts after Luz pranked him in the previous chapter.
    • Donna mentions that St. Epiderm is still closed down for repairs after the Grim Goblin's attack there.
    • Donna gets to learn about Eda and Raine's past after hearing the hints to it two chapters ago.
    • Nina brings up Luz and her friends departing for Hell as the last time she had seen her before now.
    • Dusty being a Hexside student back when Eda and her generation were is brought into focus.
  • A Day in the Limelight: As with its basis episode, this chapter centers around Eda and Raine's first meeting.
  • Deal with the Devil: Familiar with Luz's history of betting and knowing of her issues with Nina, Principal Faust arranges for them to compete in the IFWOT the next day and should they win a blue ribbon each, Faust will forego his threats against Luz's friends and reconsider Amity's expulsion.
  • Death Glare: Luz gives Faust one after threatening to kill him for "disciplining" her friends.
  • Eaten Alive: Timmy attemps to eat Ban because the pizza Eda ordered for the kids hadn't arrived yet.
  • Foreshadowing: After Terra leaves HECK, she bumps into Jenny and approaches her with interest.
  • The Ghost:
    • Boscha is mentioned by Gavin after he tells Luz she updated him and Angmar about Amity.
    • Willow, Gus, and Eve are brought up as "past offenders" for their unintended absences.
  • Given Name Reveal: Jenny's pre-marital name was, fittingly, "Wretch".
  • History Repeats: Faust clearly hasn't learned his lesson from threatening to expel a Clawthorne by forcing them to compete in the IFWOT with a partner and return with blue ribbons to prevent being punished.
  • Idiot Ball: Eda tries to put out the fire she and Jenny started by using a fire extinguisher...by throwing it into the fire. Donna even questions why she did that.
  • I'll Kill You!: Luz warns Faust that if he punishes her friends just because she won't bend to his whim or give him anything she has on Amity's Fae status, she'll make sure nobody will find him.
    Faust: You are...bold.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Delara coughs up blood a few times at the IFWOT, and always unintentionally when Felicity's in close proximity.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Given the fact that Eda's story remains a Whole Episode Flashback, everything concerning the past remains the same even with the addition of several established original characters. Darius and Eberwolf are now allied with Raine with Lilith and Steve now joining the CAT's, albeit four episodes early.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Gavin and Angmar mention that Boscha told them Amity's safe, but no more than that.
    • Luz informs Nina that Emily has returned to the Isles after being rescued from the Underworld.
    • Eda comforts Donna about Raine by telling her they're alive.
    • Lilith discovers that Darius is alive, kidnapped Eberwolf, saved Odalia's life and that they, Steve, and the Bat Queen joined Raine and Star's new rebellion.
  • Karma Houdini: Nina considers Emily to be one of these, as she was bailed out of prison and given a high-ranking position in the Emperor's Coven after everything she's done, and now she's apparently on the run after being exposed as the Golden Guard.
  • Locked Out of the Loop:
    • Bindell has become a member of the CAT's with Flora none the wiser of her involvement.
    • Before Lilith joins the new rebel group, she asks Raine if Eda will be part of their ranks. Raine refuses, saying they won't risk Eda or Luz being involved with their rebellion again for their own safety.
  • Loophole Abuse: Faust may not be allowed to punish Luz, but he sees her friends as fair game and threatens to go after them if she follows through with dropping out.
  • Middle Name Basis: Sully's first name is Harvey: "Sullivan" is his middle name.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Faust threatens to punish Cat for the riot at the Coven Day parade when we all know that Mel was responsible for it, not that Faust would know or care about that.
  • My God, You Are Serious!: At first, King assumes Eda's joking when she tells him it's time to get a job. He soon sees that he's the only one laughing, not counting Luz who's doing it at his expense.
  • Never My Fault: Jenny blames Eda for ruining her potion when she pushed Eda into her cauldron.
  • New Job Episode: Eda decides it's time for King to start pulling his weight and tells him to get a job. He spends the day applying for everything in the want ads (even Newt Burger and S.C.O.R.N.) and is rejected each time, most employers turning him down due to his lack of innate magic. By the end of the chapter, he's now working as a pizza delivery guy.
  • Oh, Crap!: Luz and Nina both say "oh, shit" after Faust forces them to partner up for the IFWOT the next day.
  • One-Steve Limit: Because he knows four Harvey's already, Gilbert takes to calling Sullivan Park by his middle name, or "Sully" for short.
  • Out of Focus: Eda's the star of the chapter with Donna providing some support outside of her story while King and Lilith have their own minor subplots, but Camila is seen in a flashback and Luz plays a minor role with Nina being slightly involved in her plot. Amity, Willow, Gus, and Boscha are simply mentioned.
  • Point of Divergence: To "Them's the Breaks, Kid": instead of Luz and King (the former previously mentioning already knowing the story), Eda tells the story of her first meeting with Raine to Donna and the orphans. The previous Golden Guard stopped Terra from threatening Eda and Raine after the Emperor's Coven Head sold her out, Eda ended up bringing home a ribbon, the previous Golden Guard is the one who puts in a good word for Eda, Lilith joins the Covens Against the Throne early, and Odalia and the Bat Queen have become members of the rebel cell.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Livid that Faust is threatening her over Amity and demanding she tells him what she knows because Amity "deceived everyone", Luz screams in his face that Amity didn't ask to be a Fae.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Following Luz hitting her breaking point with Faust, she gives him one over his strict authority and tyrannical usage of his power.
Luz: Y'know, ever since you came here, all you did was undo the goodwill Bump created with his students. You don't care about them or their progress, you're nothing but a pussy-ass d-hole who wants to run this school like a tyrant! Well guess what? You're not my principal… Bump is.
  • The Reveal:
    • Camila has informed Luz and Eda of her decision to move to Gravity Falls and stayed behind when they returned home following the mock wedding.
    • St. Epiderm is currently under investigation after the Grim Goblin attack.
    • Back in Eda's Hexside days, Dusty went by the name of Orange.
    • Jenny transferred to Hexside from a school called Riberton Academy, and Terra took an interest in her.
    • Samwitch met Delara (who had a one-sided friendship with Felicity) at the IFWOT.
      • Felicity, like her daughter, was a student at St. Epiderm and befriended Delara to ride on her coattails for popularity.
    • Gilbert and Sully were rivals who transferred to Hexside under different circumstances (Gilbert was kicked out of Glandus for failing the IFWOT, Sully's parents got a new job in Bonesborough which warranted a move) and Gilbert gave Sully his nickname due to knowing four "Harvey"'s. They also befriended Geist so they'd have somebody show them how things at Hexside worked.
    • Odalia joined Raine's rebellion and after informing Geist of her whereabouts, convinced him to join with her. Bindell and the Bat Queen have joined as well, along with someone named Shadow Wolf. Steve, Hikari, and Bunker have also accepted Raine's proposal to join them.
    • When Darius reformed, not all of his abomination matter returned to him, which is why he's still in his abomi-monster state. It takes heavy concentration to maintain this form and he gets headaches everytime he remembers his attempted murder.
    • Bump and Ms. Traveler met 30 years ago when the latter got Faust to step down so Bump could become principal.
    • Scandalyn went to Hexside just like her older sister.
    • Athena is confirmed to have been in the potions track when she was in school.
    • Gidget mentions that she has a sister with kids.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Not wanting to deal with Hexside's student body asking what happened to Amity and if the rumor of them eloping is true, Luz activates an invisibility glyph to escape them. When Faust later demands she respect him lest she be punished, she decides to just drop out until he brings her friends into it.
  • Sequel Hook: Faust has Luz and Nina participate this year's IFWOT, telling them both to come back with ribbons to save their futures, with the bonuses of not punishing Luz's friends and possibly revoking Amity's expulsion.
  • Shout-Out: Dusty going by the name "Orange" in the past is a nod to Ash being Red's counterpart in the Pokémon anime.
  • Synchronous Episodes: This chapter occurs at the same time as "Cat's Jubilee".
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: As previously stated, Odalia and the Bat Queen have both become members of the CAT's in order to defeat the empire.
  • Threat Backfire: Angered by Luz's "Reason You Suck" Speech, Faust warns her to back down or else. Luz assumes he'll throw her into detention, but she decides to just drop out on the spot.
  • The Un-Reveal:
    • What did Terra discuss with Jenny after HECK?
    • No hints are given toward Shadow Wolf's true identity.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Like its basis episode, the majority of this chapter focuses on how Eda first met Raine and befriended them.
  • With Friends Like These...: Felicity was friends with Delara back when they were students, but Felicity was only hanging around Delara because she was the most popular kid in St. Epiderm.
