Some final secrets are revealed about events yet to unfold...

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Accidental Murder: Camila's death turns out to be one.
  • Back for the Finale: Everyone in Gravity Falls is seen again, along with the no longer Anonymous Benefactor.
  • Book Ends:
    • The first book began with a Clawthorne on Earth finding the Noceda's car having crashed. Here, the mystery is solved: a Clawthorne accidentally caused said crash.
    • Minor, Amity doesn't appear in the prologue and she doesn't appear here.
  • The Cameo: Candy, Grenda, Pacifica, Soos, Wendy, and Vee in Gravity Falls, Katya and Anu Bist in the Demon Realm. Camila and Owlbert appear through a flashback.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The newspaper clipping Luz got from Dipper ends up being an unintended one to Lilith.
  • Demonic Possession: The so-called "Baron" possesses a dead guy who got what was coming to him.
  • Foreshadowing: Belos's plans for Luz, that "everything will fall into place eventually", are not a good sign for what's to come.
  • The Ghost: Hekapoo is mentioned by Vanz Ator as "the Forger".
  • Given Name Reveal: The Anonymous Benefactor is known as Director Gates.
  • Grand Finale: To "Book 1: Hexside's Number One Delinquent Witch" as a whole.
  • I Lied: Belos admits to Hunter he did so in regards to sparing Eda.
  • In Spite of a Nail: The events of "Gideon Rises" have occured exactly as canon.
  • It's All My Fault: As if cursing Eda and using Amity wasn't enough, Lilith discovers much to her horror that she also killed Camila, thus making her responsible for Luz being raised in the Boiling Isles and getting Belos' attention. As a result, she can't even look at Luz and decides to stay in the tower instead of her niece's room like she was offered.
  • Last Episode, New Character: The Baron, Tom Lucitor, and the Prisoner within the Magic Mirror, all of whom will play major roles next season.
  • Letting Her Hair Down: While outside thinking, Boscha has her hair let down out of her usual bun.
  • Magic Mirror: Vanz Ator uses one to track down Eda.
  • Mythology Gag: A "Dragon Claw Z" poster is briefly seen in Dipper and Mabel's room.
  • Out of Focus:
    • Luz briefly appears, but doesn't play much of a role since she's preparing to rest after the day she's just had.
    • Eda, King and Amity don't appear; the former two are mentioned and referred to, respectively. As for the latter, this is the first time since her debut that she makes no sort of appearance whatsoever.
  • Pet the Dog: After blowing her last chance to win her friends back, Boscha seems to have found a potential new one.
  • Point of Divergence: Unable to contact Luz, Dipper chooses to make a deal with Bill Cipher much earlier than he did in canon.
  • The Reveal:
    • The Blind Eye Society's benefactor seems to be related to G.B. Gates, the author of "The War Against Witchcraft".
    • The man who revived Lilith is someone who's possessed the deceased Dr. Facilier and goes by "The Baron".
    • Tom Lucitor somehow lost his parents and ended up in Bonesborough.
    • Anu Bist managed to survive and escape from the Emperor's castle.
    • Vanz Ator sold Lilith dimensional scissors to help her catch Eda while she was on Earth. When she got there, she was spooked by a car and fired at it causing it to crash. That's right; Lilith is the reason Camila died and Luz was taken in by Eda.
    • Belos/Philip's adopted parents were ancestors of the Clawthornes.
  • Sequel Hook: Dipper preparing to make a deal with Bill, Director Gates looking into the energy readings given off by Stan using Ford's portal, the Baron allying with Puck's shadow, how Tom ended up in the Boiling Isles, and Lilith needing to prepare to face Luz's wrath again when she reveals the truth of her being orphaned.
  • Shout-Out:
  • The Stinger: Word of God is that the chapter should be treated as a post-credits scene.
  • Synchronous Episodes: The events of the book's last 4 chapters that form "Agony of a Witch" and "Young Blood, Old Souls" take place the same day of the events of "Gideon Rises".
  • Time Skip: On the Gravity Falls side of the story, we've jumped to the night after Gideon was defeated and Stan obtains Journals 2 and 3, allowing him to work towards starting up the portal again.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Vanz Ator officially proves himself to be this, and unintentionally made Lilith one as well.
  • Villain in a White Suit: Yup, Director Gates sports a white suit and definitely shows signs of qualifying as a villain.
  • Wham Episode:
    • In Gravity Falls: Gideon's lost, Stan has all three journals and Dipper decides to talk with Bill. Director Gates also picks up the energy signatures of either the portal or the zodiac.
    • In the Boiling Isles: someone recovers the portal key, the Baron approaches Puck's shadow, Tom has been living on the streets, and umm... Oh, yeah, Lilith discovers SHE MADE LUZ AN ORPHAN BY ACCIDENT!!! Oh, and apparently Belos/Philip is also an honorary Clawthorne.
  • Wham Line:
    • "Bill... we need to talk." Said by Dipper after he completes the zodiac.
    • "My name... is Tom Lucitor." Said by the demon prince himself as he introduces himself to Boscha.
  • Wham Shot: 1. Dipper staring at a poster before pulling it down to reveal Bill's zodiac. 2. A hand pulling the portal key out of the black lake. 3. Boscha finding a demon with horns and three eyes on the streets. 4. Lilith looking into the car she sent off the road, then the snap to present day where she's staring at the newspaper clipping. And 5. The open journal with the first thing written in it being "Property of Philip Clawthorne."
  • When It All Began: Luz was adopted by Eda thanks to Lilith traveling to Earth using dimensional scissors and killing Camila by accident.
  • You Said You Would Let Them Go: Hunter questions his uncle why he lied and was willing to let Eda die: Belos tells him he was sparing Hunter's feelings since he felt guilty enough about what he did to Lilith. Belos also tells him he meant it when he said he wouldn't hurt Luz.

Hunter: If Luz is so valuable, why did we let her escape?
Emperor Belos: All I needed was that face to face talk with Luz. In time, everything will fall into place. And as for the key to the portal, I'm sure it will turn up eventually. But for now, we still have so much work to do in preparation for the Day of Unity...
