Recap / Lucifer (2016) S05E07 "Our Mojo"

Go To

After his first night with Chloe, Lucifer discovers that he has lost his mojo, whereas Chloe gains one, much to his frustration. In the meantime, the two attempt to capture a serial killer with a weird modus operandi.

Tropes present in the episode include:

  • And I Must Scream: The Whisper Killer injects a poison which destroys his victims' vocal cords, making them unable to speak as he murders them.
  • Big Entrance: Michael appears to Dan wearing a loose white robe and descending from the sky, complete with bright light in the background. Considering that angels in the show never had the need to do this before, it's obvious that he is evoking the traditional depiction of angels to gain his sympathy.
  • Big "NO!": By Chloe when Dan shoots Lucifer.
  • Calling Card: Each of the victims is found clutching a bunch of lilies left by the killer. Chloe and Lucifer track down the florist the flowers were purchased from which leads them to the killer.
  • Chekhov's Gun: A literal example with the gun that Lucifer gets to impersonate Chloe, which she uses in the episode's final act after the Whisper Killer knocks her original gun out of her hands during their struggle.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Dan suddenly visiting Lux's penthouse and shooting Lucifer, possibly fatally wounding him since Chloe is around.
  • Continuity Nod: After having sex with Chloe, Lucifer teases that she must feel cold, since Hell should be frozen over by now. They then recall the conversation in the season 1 episode "Manly Whatnots", where Chloe sarcastically tells Lucifer that she will have sex with him "when Hell freezes over".
  • Depower: Lucifer loses his mojo, while Chloe mysteriously gains one, though it only affects Lucifer.
  • Forced to Watch: Lucifer nearly experiences this when he is immobilized by the Whisper Killer, and as result can do nothing but watch as he moves in from behind to kill Chloe. Fortunately, she ducks at the last second.
  • Foreshadowing: As he and Chloe check out yet another flower shop to find out where the lilies at the crime scene came from, Lucifer snarks that he's starting to think that the killer grows them himself. As the next episode will reveal, the killer who bought them was a copycat, and the real Whisper Killer does indeed grow them himself— which proves to be vital.
  • Funny Background Event: While Chloe is interviewing a witness in the murder scene, Lucifer can be seen frantically trying to do his nonexistent mojo in the background.
  • Nerds Speak Klingon: Ella and Pete bond when it turns out they both know Klingon.
  • Popcultural Osmosis Failure: While Ella and Pete are conversing in Klingon, Lucifer comments that the former speaks "Chewbacca". He might have only been teasing, though.
  • Sex God: According to Ella, Pete is this.
  • Sexy Shirt Switch: In the opening scene, Chloe wakes up in Lucifer's bed wearing a white dress shirt, apparently one of his.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Linda interrupts Lucifer's explanation of how he's lost his mojo to gush over the news that he and Chloe finally slept together.
    • Since Ella is a huge supporter of Deckerstar, she literally freezes in excitement when Chloe and Lucifer confirm that they had sex.
  • Shout-Out: When Lucifer and Chloe enter the apartment where the Whisper Killer lives, the shot references the famous scene where Danny rides a tricycle in Overlook Hotel from The Shining.
    Lucifer: Well, that bodes well.
  • Talking to the Dead: Scared after finding out about Lucifer's secret, Dan vents his frustration and breaks down sobbing while visiting Charlotte's grave.
  • Villain Respect: The Whisper Killer compliments Lucifer on his strength, commenting that most people would have gone down much easier.
