Recap / Lucifer (2016) S04E02 "Somebody's Been Reading Dante's Inferno"

Go To

Chloe and Lucifer look into a murder on the set of a reality show. Father Kinley presses forward with a plan. Amenadiel reconsiders his idea of home.

Tropes present in the episode include:

  • Affectionate Parody: The Cabin is pretty clearly one of Survivor.
  • Archive Binge: In-universe.
    • If Ella is to be believed, she watched 27 seasons of The Cabin in two weeks. The Cabin is pretty clearly a bootleg Survivor but even assuming each season was as short as the shortest season of Survivor with 14 episodes note , that is still 270 hours worth of content.
    • She then partakes in another one by watching hundreds of hours of unedited footage for the season.
  • Bad Liar: In contrast to the last episode, everyone knows something is wrong with Chloe, and the one time she actually lies to Kinley, she gets called out on it immediately.
  • Big Brother Is Watching You: As it turns out, the International Association of Exorcists does this to anyone related to demonic possession or claiming to be the Devil.
  • But I Can't Be Pregnant!: Linda's reaction to her doctor telling her she's pregnant by Amenadiel.
  • The Church: Chloe visits one during her vacation, but Father Kinley is part of one specific branch called the "International Association of Exorcists".
  • Confirmation Bias: invoked Chloe is hit with this hard. She completely disregards years of working together with her partner with little to no incident because of the incident with Pierce and what she claims as "circumstantial evidence". She outright assumes a suspect is the killer because he's the "villain of the season". It gets to the point where it somewhat creates a role reversal, with Lucifer having to rein her antics in.
  • Crisis of Faith: Ella continues to have a problem with the Big Guy after the events of the third season finale, and so is trying to find things to fill her suddenly free Sundays.
  • Curse Cut Short: When discussing the immunity totem.
Lucifer: Well if it keeps you safe from elimination, I'd say tucked right up in-
    Ella: (quickly) Melinda's pocket!
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Amenadiel has decided to stay on Earth, but he's never been there without some sort of mission (official or self-imposed) before. This leads to him wandering around aimlessly trying to connect to people, without success.
  • Fangirl: Ella is one for The Cabin.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Subverted. Lucifer nearly pulls one when he protects Chloe from an axe, but thankfully it only hit his jacket.
  • Hypocrite: Chloe. She admonishes Lucifer for being selfish and only thinking about himself when she herself was doing the exact same actions as Lucifer earlier in the episode.
  • I Choose to Stay: Amenadiel's decsion to do this in the last episode gets deconstructed here, as now he has no idea what to do with himself now that he has no task to accomplish and everyone is busy.
  • Internal Reveal: Chloe finally learns that she is Lucifer's Achilles' Heel.
  • Jerkass: Exploited by Judd. Having realised through binge-watching previous editions of The Cabin that the asshole villain archetype wins in the majoritynote  of seasons, he decided to adopt such a façade in order to "play the odds" and give himself a better chance of winning.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Father Kinley. It's repeatedly been established that any evil that humans commit is a result of free will, not Lucifer. But because Chloe has only recently found out the truth of Lucifer, Kinley uses the opportunity to turn her into an Unwitting Pawn against Lucifer.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Lucifer's actions within the episode pretty much confirm everything Kinley said about him when he just wants to go on a date. Although it can be seen as a deconstruction as Lucifer and Chloe are still trying to solve the case, with him even jumping in to save her.
  • Noodle Incident: The only thing we know about Bob, Ella's turtle, is that it "didn't get along with Margaret".
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Amenadiel immediately knows something is wrong when Lucifer asks him for fashion advice.
  • Out of the Inferno: Lucifer walks out of a burning building without a scratch on him; he's only peeved about the fire ruining his suit.
  • Precision F-Strike: Maze after seeing Linda faint: "You scared the shit out of me!", arguably a way to subtly sneak in the transition from Fox to Netflix.
  • Super-Strength: Amenadiel manages to kick a soccer ball over a building.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: Linda is revealed to be pregnant with Amenadiel's child.
  • Title Drop: Comes up during Lucifer and Chloe's conversation about Hell.
  • Too Much Information: Subverted. Lucifer tells Ella this after she starts speculating in pretty graphic terms on how appreciative Chloe will be of the date he's planning... and then he tells her that of course he's just kidding and he'd love for her to keep talking!
  • Truth in Television: The International Association of Exorcists actually does exist.
  • Unflinching Walk: When a suspect blows up the Cabin by setting off a severed gas line - without knowing Lucifer was inside - Lucifer simply walks out the front door.
