Recap / Lord Marksman And Vanadis Volume 13

Go To

After Tigre and Asvarre help the Moonlight Knights successfully repel the Sachstein invasion, the weary Moonlight Knights are suddenly ambushed by Greast’s army on their way to Brune. Tigre and Elen are separated from their allies and Mashas and Lim must lead the Knights in their stead. As Tigre battles Vodyanoy again, Muozinel invades Nemetacum and enslaves the Brunish folk. Meanwhile, Mila rushes to Tigre’s side. The two must save Elen from Greast’s torture and stop him once and for all.

It is considerably Darker and Edgier than all of the light novel volumes released so far.

This volume contains examples of:

  • All Up to You: With most of his allies demoralized and Elen captured, Tigre decides to go rescue her himself.
  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: The Muozinellian army invades Nemetacum and enslaves its citizens in the second half of the volume.
  • Alone with the Psycho: Elen with Greast.
  • Arch-Enemy: Denis is Greast’s, given that Denis's brother was killed by the latter’s torture devices.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Greast gets his hand pierced by Tigre's bow, and Elen chops Greast’s arm off when he requests that she must help him heal his arm.
  • Attempted Rape: Greast attempts to subject Elen to this as part of his gambit to demoralize Tigre. Pity he didn't realize the implications when his hand gets shot.
  • Badass Army: With Elen's return, the Leitmeritz army rejoins the Moonlight Knights in taking down Greast.
  • Badass in Distress: Elen is held behind bars while enduring Greast’s torture.
  • Batman Gambit: When Greast hears that Tigre is attempting to rescue Elen, he conceives a scheme by raping her to bait Tigre and demoralize the Leitmeritz army as a whole. Needless to say, his plan falls apart.
  • Berserk Button:
    • When Greast is about to rape Elen as soon as Tigre is about to rescue her, she hacks off his hand after Tigre shoots an arrow through his hand.
    • The Moonlight Knights get really pissed off when they hear that Elen has been tortured and almost raped by Greast.
  • Big Bad: Greast gets more involved as a villain this time around.
  • Big Badass Battle Sequence: The Moonlight Knights fight against Greast's forces in Montour.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Mila stops Vodyanoy in the nick of time just as he is about to chop Tigre's arm off.
    • In the second half, Mila and Tigre arrive to rescue Elen from Greast just before he goes through with his Batman Gambit.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Elen and Tigre finally kiss each other at the end of the volume.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Greast and his allies are all dead, Tigre and Mila rescue Elen, Tigre and Tina part on good terms, Tigre and Elen consummate their relationship, and Pierre Badowin is about to make Tigre the next monarch of Brune. However, Muozinel plans to invade Nice, the Brunish rivers are poisoned, there is still political unrest in Brune, Durandal is in possession of the demons, and Ganelon plans to cause chaos in both Brune and Zhcted.
  • Break the Cutie: Greast’s torture and Attempted Rape utterly breaks Elen’s spirit. She gets better.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Greast probably should not have tortured Elen like that.
  • Call-Back:
    • Mila’s Big Damn Heroes moment certainly echoes her previous one when her army comes by to help Tigre drive the Muozinellians out of Agnes in volume 4.
    • Greast captures Elen to be tortured and raped in Lutetia, much to Elen’s anger. Back in volume 6, Eliot captures Sofya and almost does the exact same thing to her.
    • Even further back, how Greast almost raped Elen is very similar to what Zion did to Titta in the second half of volume 1. Also, just like Zion, Greast gets his hand pierced by Tigre’s arrow.
    • Elen’s Heroic BSoD over Greast’s Mind Rape and Cold-Blooded Torture and Tigre’s consoling her mirrors what Elen did to Tigre when he lost Bertrand in Volume 5.
    • Muozinel’s invasion of Nemetacum is very similar to what happened in volume 4 when Muozinel invaded Agnes.
    • Kureys learns from Damad that Tigre has survived, as shown in volume 10.
  • The Cavalry: In the final act, Gaspard and his cavalry take Tigre, Elen and Mila to regroup with the Moonlight Knights and the Leitmeritz army, and eventually defeat Greast while they are at it.
  • Character Death: Greast is executed towards the end of the volume.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture:
    • Greast subjects Elen to this during her capture. He stops short of kissing her and having sex with her, but he attempts to get into her skirt right in front of Tigre when he is about to rescue her. What he did not realize was that Elen had lost all patience with him at this point.
    • At the end of the volume, Denis subjects Greast to one of his own inventions after being defeated.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The Moonlight Knights curb-stomps Greast's army towards the end of the volume.
  • Darker and Edgier: This volume is easily the darkest one in the series.
  • Darkest Hour: Elen is captured and tortured. The Moonlight Knights are defeated. Tigre encounters Vodyanoy. Muozinel invades Nemetacum. All at the same time.
  • Defiled Forever: Elen is traumatized by Greast’s sexual assault, even though she realizes that he didn't go all the rape by the time she was rescued (if only because he wanted to to that in front of Tigre.)
  • Despair Event Horizon: Greast's torture is what finally pushes Elen over the edge after Greast’s defeat.
  • Did You Just Have Sex?: After Their First Time, Tigre and Elen decide to keep their relationship under wraps because of the potential political issues of a Brune nobleman and a Zchted Vanadis pairing up, but the moment they encounter Mila, she immediately guesses why the two hadn't shown their faces the previous night.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Greast didn't see that the Moonlight Knights would finally make their move when Elen is rescued.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Greast’s plan to rape Elen after learning that Tigre is going to rescue her has some serious holes he did not even realize. Especially considering the fact that he was about to do it right before Tigre fires his arrow at him.
  • Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: After Greast plans his Attempted Rape on Elen to make her and Tigre suffer, he gets his hand impaled by Tigre’s arrow and chopped off by Elen’s Arifal.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Tigre, Elen, Mila, the Moonlight Knights, the Leitmeritz army, and Denis of all characters, have it out for Greast after Elen is rescued.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Elen seeks solace in drinking alcohol after the battle with Greast to get over his torture. Also a case of I Need a Freaking Drink.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Greast may have been defeated, but all there's left now are Valentina and Ganelon.
  • Fatal Flaw: For Greast, it’s his lust for Elen.
  • Greater-Scope Villain:
    • Ganelon’s still an active player, as he is one of the demons that has the Durandal in his possession.
    • Kureys and Damad are also lurking around, since they are involved in the Muozinel’s invasion of Nemetacum.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Tigre goes through a brief one when he feels that he has failed to let Elen be captured. He gets better.
    • Elen falls into a major one following Greast’s Cold-Blooded Torture and Mind Rape to the point that she drinks alcohol to get over it.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Elen’s not going to be raped that easily, Greast.
  • He's Back!: Tigre and Elen regroup the Moonlight Knights following Elen’s rescue, to everyone’s surprise.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Greast's own torture devices are used against him towards the end of the volume, courtesy of Denis.
  • I Have Your Wife: Greast captures Elen and tortures her to make Tigre and the Moonlight Knights suffer.
  • Intimate Psychotherapy: Despite Elen’s trauma over Greast’s Attempted Rape, Tigre declares that he wants her virginity so he'll never have to fear someone else stealing it. Elen muses that his request is somewhat insensitive after what she went through, but accepts in the hope that Tigre will overwrite Greast's sexual assault with a more positive experience.
  • It's All My Fault: How Tigre feels about Elen’s disappearance.
  • It's Personal:
    • As he feels responsible for allowing Elen to be captured, Tigre runs off to rescue Elen alone.
    • In the second half of the volume, Greast plans to exact revenge on Tigre for taking Elen back.
    • Towards the end of the volume, Denis kills Greast to avenge his brother’s death and restore his honor.
  • Karmic Death: Greast gets killed by his fire armor, the very same torture device that he used on Denis’s father and brother.
  • Kick the Dog: Greast tortures Elen for ten days and plots his Attempted Rape on her to make Tigre suffer and lose the will to fight after learning that he is about to rescue her. This one ends up being a bad move.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: At the end of the volume, Elen asks Tigre to make her forget about Greast’s Mind Rape and Cold-Blooded Torture.
  • Made a Slave: All of the citizens of southern Brune, especially the elderly and children, are enslaved following Muozinel’s invasion.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": The Moonlight Knights when they realize the full extent of what happened to Elen.
  • Mind Rape: Greast's torture really makes Elen lose her mind towards the end of the volume, but she gets better.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Tigre is regretful that he wasn’t able to save Elen from being captured by Greast.
  • My Greatest Failure: Since Tigre is the commander of the Moonlight Knights, he is clearly devastated by Elen’s disappearance.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Mila convinces Tigre that Elen will not be killed and she will help him find her before it’s too late.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Greast’s Batman Gambit consists of his Attempted Rape on Elen to make Tigre and the Leitmeritz army suffer. It backfires however, because the Leitmeritz Army is outraged at hearing about what he had done.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Tigre gets this when he meets up with Vodyanoy again.
    • Mila when her Lavias No Sells on the chains holding Elen.
    • Greast does this when a royally pissed off Elen chops his hand off as Tigre and Mila rescue her. He gets a second one when the Leitmeritz army and the Moonlight Knights have it out for him. Then a third when he is captured by Denis.
    • Then at the very end of the volume, Mila is shocked to see that Elen and Tigre have had sex.
  • Plot Parallel:
    • Vodyanoy almost chops off Tigre’s arm; Greast gets his hand chopped off by Elen.
    • Greast sexually harasses and attempts to rape Elen. Later, Tigre and Elen have passionate sex.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Tigre leaving to go rescue Elen on her own could have been averted if the soldiers had not been poisoned and tried to stop him from rescuing Elen.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Sure, the Moonlight Knights has defeated Greast and Tigre and Elen consummate their relationship, but Muozinel has invaded Nemetacum and enslaved almost all of the citizens of southern Brune.
  • Quit Your Whining: In the first half, Mila snaps Tigre out of his funk so that he can rescue Elen.
  • Rank Up: At the end of volume 13, Regin promotes Tigre as the Brunish Army’s commander-in-chief.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Subverted, although he does lick most of her body and fondle her breasts, he stops short of touching her lips or crotch. Then it’s almost played straight when he learns that Tigre is about to rescue her, but it doesn’t get that far.
  • Rape Leads to Insanity: Towards the end of this volume, Elen loses her mind up due to Greast’s Cold-Blooded Torture and Attempted Rape. She eventually snaps out of it when Tigre professes his love for her, though.
  • Roaring Rampage of Rescue: Tigre launches a rescue attempt on Elen after he learns that Greast has tortured her for ten days, up until Mila shows up to help.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: The Leitmeritz army initiates one of these on the Greast’s army as soon as they learn about what happened to Elen towards the end of the volume.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Subverted. Tigre ditches the Moonlight Knights to rescue Elen alone, but he does come back.
  • Sequel Hook:
    • The volume ends with Regin summoning Tigre to help end the Muozinellian invasion.
    • Kureys has invaded Nemetacum and enslaved all of the citizens there, so we’ll no doubt be seeing him again next volume.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: After kissing Tigre at the end of the volume, Elen teases Tigre about having sex. It then cuts to the next morning where they are naked in the bed together having just had sex.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Elen temporarily becomes this due to Greast’s torture of her at the end of the volume.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: When Elen is rescued, Greast asks Elen to help him heal his hand. Elen retaliates by chopping his hand off.
  • Smug Snake: Greast's arrogant personality comes back to bite him big time.
  • So Much for Stealth: Mila and Tigre sneak into Greast's camp. Unfortunately, one of Greast's men discovers them as soon as they enter.
  • Spiteful Spit: Elen spits on Greast's cheek as he starts molesting her, but he happily licks it up.
  • Their First Time: Elen and Tigre finally have sex at the end of the volume.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: Tigre has to go rescue Elen by himself.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Greast attempting to rape Elen when he hears that Tigre is going to rescue her is definitely not a good idea.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Greast escapes and flees to his villa when his army is cornered and massacred by the Moonlight Knights, but Denis stops him in his tracks.
  • Villainous BSoD: Greast is rendered virtually catatonic after almost all of his allies are killed and runs off to his villa, only for him to suffer a Karmic Death at the hands of Denis.
  • Villains Want Mercy: Greast wants to help Elen heal his hand as an act of mercy. Elen doesn’t buy that.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Some of the Brunish nobility (except those who are loyal to him) call out Tigre for his actions in their first defeat, which leads to the latter abandoning his troops to rescue Elen by himself. Given that some of these allies were poisoned and left the army, Elen has been captured and tortured and that the Muozinellian army is invading Brune, this is understandable.
    • Mila also calls Tigre out for attempting to go save Elen by himself.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Greast tortures Elen for his sadistic pleasure and attempts to rape her so that he can make Tigre suffer. It doesn't work.
  • You Are in Command Now: In the first half, Mashas and Lim take over leadership of the Moonlight Knights when Tigre sets off alone to rescue Elen.
  • You Are Not Alone: Deliberately Invoked by Mila when she tells Tigre that he can't rescue Elen alone.
  • Zerg Rush: The Moonlight Knights rush Greast and his men at the end of the volume.
