Recap / Little Princess S 1 E 19 I Want My Tent

Go To

The Princess is outside, playing in a tent she made out of a bed sheet on the clothesline. However, the Maid comes over and takes the sheet because she needs it to make a bed. The General then walks across it, leaving muddy tracks. This, predictably, puts both Maid and Princess into a bad mood. The narrator suggests the Princess play a different game, but she would rather play camping, so she decides to make another, better tent.

She tries the outdoor table but feels it isn't "special" enough. She then finds some croquet clubs and stacks them together, but they won't stay still, so she ties them together with her jump rope and slings a blanket over it. She's satisfied with this, but then the King shows up, requiring his croquet mallets for an "important game".

The Princess goes to sulk in her room, and she decides that since people keep getting in the way, she needs somewhere quiet and secluded. She decides to sling her blanket over a tree branch, then steals a garden gnome, plant, watering can, and a pair of wellies to hold the blanket in place.

She then decides that she needs milk and biscuits to make it a "real home" and asks the Chef. He's mad at her for accidentally startling him into spilling his frosting however, so only allows her one cookie. She takes the whole plate anyway, then goes to the living room.

There, the Princess asks the Queen for some wool. The Queen says yes, but the Princess accidentally takes the ball of yarn she's using. The Princess also packs a tea set, some books, two dolls, a cushion, a paint set, and her potty. She goes back to the tent, picking some of the Gardener's flowers along the way, and decorates the tent while pretending to put Gilbert down for a nap.

After the decorating is done, the Princess paints the pets' portraits, then has a pretend tea party with them. However, when she goes to offer the pets biscuits, two mice have eaten them all, making her scream because she's afraid of mice. It then starts to rain, making the Princess scream again because it's getting her paintings wet.

She comes in, then the Maid bathes her. However, the Princess still wants to play camping, but it's bedtime. She then realises she left Gilbert with her "tent", and goes to retrieve him. The Princess sees that her blanket on the clothes horse is hung up in a way that resembles a tent.

The Queen and Maid come to kiss the Princess goodnight but she's not there. They search the castle, then find her in the laundry room, sleeping in the "tent" with Scruff. They leave her there, then Puss prepares to catch the mice, but changes his mind and falls asleep with the Princess and Scruff instead.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Puss wears a bib at the Princess's pretend tea party.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: The Princess says, "I made it out of—-", then the Maid exclaims, "My sheet!".
  • Blowing a Raspberry:
    • Two mice blow raspberries at Scruff from behind glass bottles, scaring him.
    • Those same mice then blow raspberries at him from up a tree.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: The things the Princess takes for her tent are, in order, some milk and cookies, a ball of yarn, a tea set, some books, two dolls, a cushion, a paint set, and her potty.
  • Camping Episode: Played with. The episode focuses on the Princess trying to pretend to camp, rather than actually camping.
  • Catch Your Death of Cold: Discussed. When the Princess comes in from the rain, the Maid says, "You'll catch a nasty cold". Thankfully, the Princess doesn't.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Two mice blow raspberries at Scruff from behind glass bottles. This scares him, so he hides under a wheelbarrow. The Princess (who admittedly didn't see the mice, but Scruff was clearly shaking with fear) sees him and says, "Oh no, Scruff, that won't do at all for a tent."
  • The Dreaded Tea Party: When the Princess hosts a pretend tea party with the pets, they both seem bored by it, and Puss rolls his eyes upon not being actually given anything to drink. They brighten up when she offers biscuits, but unfortunately two mice have eaten them.
  • Go-to-Sleep Ending: The episode ends with Puss falling asleep next to the already-sleeping Princess and Scruff.
  • Non Sequitur: Due to still wanting to play camping when the Princess is put to bed, she simply states, "Tent" without any context or prompt.
  • Plot Hole: If it was bedtime when the Princess came in from the rain, why wasn't she called in for dinner earlier?
  • Sore Loser: The King groans and looks sad after losing a croquet game.
  • Title Drop: The Princess grumpily states the episode title when the Maid is drying her.
