Recap / Little Princess S 1 E 20 I Want To Win

Go To

The Princess is planning to play catch with her new ball, but she has to do it outside due to playing with it inside being prohibited. She tells the King and Queen, who are playing a board game in the living room, and the Queen invites her to play with them instead. The Princess asks for the rules of the game, and if anything bounces, but when they tell her no, she decides to play with the ball instead.

As she leaves, she explains to the narrator that she dislikes "sitting-down games". She goes outside, and he asks her if she needs someone to play catch with, but she explains that she uses the wall. However, as the Princess starts her game, Scruff catches the ball instead and pops it.

She goes into the living room and tells her parents that Scruff broke her ball, so the King takes it to fix it, while the Queen has the Princess take over the board game. The Princess wins, and decides to play again but the Queen says, "Maybe later". The King then returns with the patched-up, reinflated ball, but the Princess abandons it.

She goes into her room and retrieves several board games, which puzzles the narrator until she reveals that she plans on winning at them all. She goes to the Maid and General and they agree to play Ludo.

Later, the Princess reveals that she beat the Maid and General at Ludo, the Prime Minister at chess, the Admiral at an unknown game (although he would have rather danced than played), the Chef at dominoes (though he would have preferred solitaire), and the Gardener at blocks. The narrator says that "all that winning must be tiring", but she assures him that it hasn't been.

She then beats Scruff at chess, and the King comes in. The Princess tells him that he's the only one she hasn't beat, so they play the board game from earlier, but this time the King wins. The Princess gets grumpy and sits on her bed sulking, while the King tries to teach her to be a better loser.

Some time later, the Princess is still in a bad mood, but less snippy. When the narrator asks if she's giving up, the Princess says, "Giving up? No way" and decides to play again. The King wins, and the Princess isn't a sore loser anymore but she's still an irritated one and wants another try. They try again and again and eventually, she does win, but by then it's nighttime.

The next day, the Princess gives up board games due to "too much sitting down" and goes out to play catch with the Maid, General, Prime Minister, and Scruff, but unfortunately the latter pops the ball again.

This episode provides examples of

  • Artistic License: When the Princess plays chess with Scruff, there is no black side.
  • Big "NO!": The Princess says, "No... no... NO!" after losing at a board game.
  • Blowing a Raspberry: The Princess blows a raspberry at Scruff to gloat when she beats him at chess.
  • Happy Dance:
    • The General does a little celebratory dance after winning at hopscotch.
    • The Princess also does a celebratory dance after winning at Ludo and later chess.
  • Smart Ball: The Princess, a four-year-old, beats the Prime Minister at chess (though, he may have thrown the game, considering that the General explained that she wanted to win).
  • Sore Loser:
    • Downplayed for the General. He doesn't stew or yell or anything when he loses at Ludo, but he seems a little grumpy and reluctant to congratulate the Princess at her win.
    • Downplayed, then later averted for the Maid. When she loses at hopscotch she seems unimpressed but that's more to do with the General's showboating. Then, when she loses at Ludo, she civilly congratulates the Princess.
    • Played straight for the Princess, who does a Big "NO!" upon losing a board game.
  • Stock Animal Diet: Puss, a cat, eats a fish.
  • Title Drop: The Princess calls out, "I want to win! Who's first?".
