Recap / Legacies S1E10 "This Is Why We Don't Entrust Plans to Muppet Babies"

Go To

Flashbacks reveal how Alyssa Chang got to the school and how she's always been made fun of by the other witches. The monster the Necromancer has made a deal with appears at the school, invisible and untouchable, and starts influencing Alyssa and then Hope into being incredibly bitchy. Wade and Landon quickly figure out something is wrong and even learn that the monster is a Qareen, which sows and feeds on discord until it manifests physically. Emma is back for Coven Day, but her efforts are thwarted by the Qareen. Eventually, the creature is strong enough to appear physically, so it takes the Mora Miserium from Josie. Landon figures out that the Qareen is vulnerable to fairies, and Wade believes himself to be one. So Landon gets everyone to chant his name, as fairies are powered by belief. Landon attacks the Qareen, which gives Wade enough faith in himself to sprout butterfly wings and destroy the creature with fairy dust.

Meanwhile, Alaric is having drinks with Sheriff Mac to try to get some advice on getting rid of a "bomb" (he can't very well tell her the truth about the Mora Miserium). She suggests that he allow the girls to solve their own problems, and he agrees to let them try their plan to send the artifact into a new prison dimension (other than the one where their crazy uncle Kai is trapped in). Emma leads the witches in a ritual to construct a new Ascendant and send the sand clock away. Everything seems to work, except Alaric and the twins suddenly vanish in a flash of light. Alyssa confronts Emma and reveals that she remembers what she and Alaric did to her as a child, so she used the opportunity to punish him and his daughters by sending them to the prison world. Alyssa then knocks Emma out and wipes her memory of the confession, but when she returns to her room, Hope is there waiting for her, knowing at least some of what she's done.

In the prison world, which looks like the school, Alaric and the twins meet Sebastian, whom Emma sent there earlier.

  • Brutal Honesty: One of the effects of the Qareen's influence. When Hope tries to apologize and says she didn't mean what she said, Landon points out that the Qareen can't create insecurities, only amplify them.
  • Chekhov's Skill: During one of her flashbacks its established that Alyssa learned how to do linking spells in order to get revenge on Lizzie. At the end of the episode its revealed that Alyssa preformed a linking and time delay spell on the two Ascendants so it would send the Saltzmans to Kai's prison world.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The episode focuses on Alyssa and Wade. Alyssa is a case of Remember the New Guy? (she was introduced in the previous episode), while Wade only appeared occasionally.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Landon realizes that Wade really is a fairy because he was immune to the Qareen's power when near Wade and was affected by the creature after leaving Wade.
  • Fur Against Fang: The Qareen makes Kaleb start a fight with Jed, which brings the other vampires and werewolves into it.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Alyssa's revenge against the Saltzmans involves sending them to the prison dimension, which Alaric and Emma have done to a number of students (and Sebastian) previously, while also wiping Emma's memory of her confession.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: Alyssa didn't have it easy at the school, with the others making fun of her being an orphan. It's one of the reasons she grew up to be so bitchy.
  • Our Fairies Are Different: According to Wade, fairies like honey, music, and can make those around them cheerful. They have butterfly-like wings that can shoot fairy dust, which is lethal to Qareens. Fairies are also immune to the powers of the Qareens and also project that immunity to the immediate area around them. Fairies are capable of some magic, although not nearly to the extent of witches. Fairies are powered by belief, which is both a strength and a weakness.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Landon is alerted that something is wrong by Hope saying a single mean thing to him, so he immediately hits the books to try to figure out what is happening.
  • Power Misidentification: Wade has long been seen as a witch, but he was always terrible at it, so he did some research and figured out that he's a fairy. Naturally, everyone thinks it's ridiculous, at least until the end of the episode, when he sprouts wings and destroys the Monster of the Week.
  • Prison Dimension: Lizzie and Josie want to send the sand clock into the prison world, only for Alaric to be dead-set against it, given that their insane uncle Kai is trapped there. They suggest creating a new one using the upcoming meteor shower to help power the spell. After Alaric changes his mind, many of the school's witches participate in the ritual under Emma's guidance. However, they don't realize that Alyssa has sabotaged the ritual and linked the new prison world to the one Kai is trapped in, while also casting a dime-delayed spell that will send all three Saltzmans to the prison world. Alaric is immediately able to tell where they have ended up, given that this world is shaped like the school.
  • Remember the New Guy?: The flashbacks reveal that Alyssa has been at the school and has interacted with everyone for years, but she was somehow missing from every shot prior to the previous episode.
  • The Reveal: Alaric didn't kill Sebastian. He had Emma send him to to the prison dimension, something they've done to a number of problem students over the years.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Years ago, Josie and Lizzie played a joke on Alyssa using a paper fortune teller, claiming that she would grow up to be a troll and marry Jed. Fast-forward to the present, and all the abuse has turned Alyssa into the modern version of a troll (i.e. someone who sows discord and strife), and she's shown to be making out with Jed on Hope's bed.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After spending most of the series being ignored or forgotten by everyone in the school Wade becomes the hero of the day when he is finally able to access his fairy powers and destroy the Qareen whereupon everyone in the school congratulates him.
  • Title Drop: Lizzie says the phrase when Wade is unable to do any fairy-like even after everyone starts chanting his name. She likely refers to Landon and Wade being pretty useless compared to the other students at the school.
  • Working with the Ex: Dorian is forced into this situation when Emma returns from Japan for a day. They seem like Amicable Exes at first, but the Qareen brings their insecurities to the surface, with Dorian accusing Emma of choosing her job in Japan over their relationship, and Emma pointing out that he never told her how he felt about it.
