Recap / Legacies S2E11 "What Cupid Problem?"

Go To

A new monster comes to the school, and it appears to be Cupid. Landon tried to unlock what he believes to be his ability to fly, so that he's a little more useful than just having the power not to die. Hope captures Cupid and rips off his wings, taking one of his arrows in order to try to get Alyssa to reveal where she hid the Ascendant used to trap the Saltzmans. The arrow causes Alyssa to reveal her crush on MG. MG tried to get a date with Kym, but Kym has to do research on Cupid, while Hope asks him to get Alyssa to open up. MG eventually tells Alyssa the truth that he likes Kym. Alyssa breaks the Ascendant and tries to kill Kym and then MG. Meanwhile, Cupid regrows his wings and escapes. Landon and a group of students track him down to a club, where he is shown to be eating people's hearts. Hope appears and seemingly kills the monster with its own arrows, but it flees. Landon realizes that the monster isn't Cupid but one of his brothers. The monster comes to Hope and reveals that his real name is Pothos. He tried to eat Hope's heart, but Landon appears and gets him to eat his instead. Pothos then drops dead. After coming back to life, Landon reveals that he ingested the weaknesses of all of Cupid's brothers, according to mythology, including the pothos plant, which is poisonous to its namesake. Kym decides to leave the school. Hope admits she should not have tried to keep Landon safe. They kiss and realize they're floating — Landon can fly after all. Meanwhile, the Necromancer has used the distraction to raid the school's armory, finding the golden arrow the winged monster has been seeking, the same golden arrow the Sphinx prophesied.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Under the arrow's influence, Alyssa reveals she has a huge crush on MG and Hope pushes for him to seduce her for information. Despite Alyssa showing up in a bikini for a pool date, MG would clearly rather be fighting monsters.
  • And Show It to You: Pothos rips out Landon's heart and shows it to him before taking a bite out of it.
  • Calling Shot Gun: When tracking Cupid, the new "Super Squad" goes into town. Kaleb takes his Cool Car, with Pedro calling "shotgun". After they arrive, the other three catch up to them on scooters, with Landon complaining that Pedro calling "shotgun infinity" is wrong.
  • Disappointed in You: After MG asks Kaleb if he is surprised by him wanting to date Kim, Kaleb replies "no I'm not surprised. Disappointed by not surprised."
  • Evil All Along: "Cupid" isn't really Cupid, but his older brother Pothos, who likes to eat human hearts.
  • Fallen Cupid: The monster turns out to be not really Cupid but his older brother Pothos, whose arrows fill his victims with mad love. Then he eats their hearts.
  • Flight:
    • Cupid/Pothos can fly thanks to his wings.
    • Landon spends part of the episode trying to fly, figuring that, being a bird, he ought to do that. He somehow manages to do that while kissing Hope at the end, although they end up crashing back down when he can't maintain altitude.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Alyssa drops the Ascendant instead of giving it to MG. He just lets it fall and break instead of using his Super-Speed to snatch it out of the air. Justified, since he was surprised at this.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: Thanks to Cupid's arrows, Dorian and Emma end up getting hitched. Jed, who's also been affected by Cupid, tries to interrupt the wedding and professes his own love for Emma, resulting in a fight with Dorian.
  • Healing Factor: Cupid's wings grow back in a few hours.
  • Not What It Looks Like: MG asks Kaleb for his blessing to date his sister Kym. Later on, Kaleb witnesses Alyssa kissing MG and assumes that MG is a willing participant. MG tries to explain, but then Alyssa attacks.
  • Properly Paranoid: After Kym is almost murdered by Alyssa she realizes the Kaleb was right and it is to dangerous for her to stay at the Salvatore School and she leaves.
  • Relationship Sabotage: Not wanting MG to date his sister Kym, Kaleb deliberately tells him things Kym supposedly likes but actually hates, like pool parties (she's scared of drowning) and chocolate-covered strawberries (she's allergic to both).
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Being nearly killed by a crazy witch has convinced Kym that Kaleb was right, so she goes back home. She does, however, express a desire to see MG again.
  • Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace: Jed interrupts Dorian and Emma's wedding at this particular moment.
  • Thanatos Gambit: Landon gets Pothos to eat his heart, thus poisoning himself with one of the items Landon has ingested, not knowing which of Cupid's brothers he was dealing with. Of course, Landon knows that he won't stay dead.
  • Title Drop: Asked by Cupid himself when Hope asks if Landon can handle the "Cupid problem" by himself.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: Pothos eats Landon's heart and then dies. After coming back to life, Landon reveals that he ingested a number of items that are poisonous to Cupid's brothers, one of which happened to have worked.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Wade throws up when he sees Cupid eat someone's heart. Except, being a fairy, he throws up fairy dust.
  • We Need a Distraction: After the mess with Pothos is over Dorian wonders if maybe keeping everyone distracted was the point of Pothos's attack. Wade then appears and tells him and Emma that the armory has been raided and we find out that the Necromancer used the distraction to steal all of the weapons from the Salvatore School including the Golden Arrow from the Sphinx's prophecy.
  • Yandere: Hope stabs Alyssa with one of Cupid's more potent arrows, hoping it would get her to open up about the Ascendant. Instead, it gets Alyssa obsessed with MG, whom she had a slight crush on (the thing with Jed was never serious). Hope convinces MG to play along, but he can't go through with it and admits everything to Alyssa. She seems to be okay with giving him the Ascendant, but when he reveals that he likes Kym, breaks the Ascendant and tries to kill Alyssa with an axe. Then she grabs a wooden stake and tries to kill MG in a If I Can't Have You… moment, but Kym knocks her out with a heavy book. After being locked up again, Kaleb tells her that MG doesn't care about her and suggests she find a new crush. Given her sudden smile, Kaleb may have inadvertently put himself into her sights.
