Season 1, Episode 4: Prometheus

Tropes That Appear In This Episode:

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Prometheus has Hippocampus forge a blade from the supernatural metal used to bind him to kill Zeus with. Hippocampus makes one that can cut through an entire stone dropped on the blade easily, yet Prometheus demands that it be sharper still.
  • Accidental Murder: Shlub accidentally stabs Stupendous' father with his scorpion tail in reflex, which kills him instantly.
  • Being Tortured Makes You Evil: Having his liver eaten did not do well for Prometheus' general attitude, and it's implied it only radicalized him to wanting to kill Zeus once freed.
  • Brick Joke: Prometheus steals wheels from humans to give to the squirrels, with Tyrannis pointing out that they wouldn't know what to do with them. In The Stinger, we see a squirrel pushing a tiny cart full of nuts.
  • Broken Pedestal: All mortals look up to Prometheus for gifting them fire, but Tyrannis and Hippocampus soon learn he's pretty radical in person.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Shlub lives up to his name but is still a dangerous monster with a deadly scorpion tail. He accidentally kills Stupendous' father when he's threatened, and offscreen killed many more cyclops that tried to fight him.
  • Cue the Flying Pigs: Deliria once claimed she'd tell Stupendous who her father was if she could manage to swallow a baby pig whole. After decades of practicing, Stupendous finally managed to succeed, but Deliria never actually intended to follow through and doesn't even remember which cyclops she slept with.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: The second Stupendous removes her eyepatch to reveal she naturally has only one eye, multiple Cyclopses recognize it as "Donny's eye".
  • Fantastic Racism: There's animosity towards giants from cyclops, saying they're just cyclops with two eyes.
  • Gene Hunting: Stupendous wants to find her father so she can punch him in the face. Deliria declines to help her because she didn't care enough to remember him but Shlub offers to at least bring her to the island of Cyclops to find him.
  • Of Corpse He's Alive: Shlub holds up the corpse of Stupendous' father and throws his voice to make it look like he's apologizing to Stupendous. Stupendous sees through it, but appreciates the gesture.
  • Passive-Aggressive Kombat: Deliria denounces Prometheus as not that great, so Tyrannis has Hippocampus help him find and free Prometheus to prove her wrong. Once it becomes apparent that Prometheus really isn't that great, Deliria rubs it in by promising to go along with his doomed plan to kill Zeus knowing she'll die, for Tyrannis' sake, to pile on the guilt.
  • Principles Zealot: This is Prometheus' problem. He's not wrong to stand up to Zeus and try and be charitable to mortals, but he's basically as self-absorbed and irrational as the other gods, only for "helping" others rather than indulging himself and feeling entitled to support because of it. He leaves to go give the wheel to squirrels even though Tyrannis has a point that they really wouldn't know what to do with them.
  • Really Gets Around: According to Shlub, because monsters are an endangered species they regularly sleep around to build their numbers and practice absentee parenthood.
  • Recycled Premise: An episode of Hercules: The Animated Series also dealt with a demigod taking it upon himself to free Prometheus from his god-ordained punishment. Double points for Jerry Stiller voicing the eagle in that show, and his son Ben Stiller voicing Prometheus himself here!
  • Revenge Before Reason: Prometheus is deadset on seeking revenge against Zeus when he's freed and is entitled to help from mortals because he believes they owe him.
  • Special Guest: Ben Stiller guest stars as Prometheus.
