Recap / King Of The Hill S 8 E 1 Patch Boomhauer

Go To

Boomhauer's womanizing brother Patch arrives in town to celebrate his upcoming nuptials. But things are complicated when it turns out he's marrying a past love of Boomhauer's.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: After learning the truth about Patch, Hank (as the best man) gives a speech at the rehearsal dinner stating that soon-to-be newly weds must take their marriage seriously, and for Patch to give up his womanizing ways in order to expose him or get him to confess. But then Katherine interrupts and confess that she's only marrying Patch because his resemblance to Boomhauer, whom she might still have feelings for. So she breaks off the engagement.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Katherine breaks off her engagement with Patch because she still has feelings for Boomhauer, and then learns that Patch is a real sleaze. However, she decides to leave town to clear her head. But not before giving Boomhauer a kiss, implying that they may get back together one day.
  • Blame Game: When Katherine walks out on Patch after he confesses to hiring the prostitutes (see Idiot Ball), Patch tries to pin Hank as the one who hired them. Apparently Peggy believes him, since she's giving Hank a Death Glare.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: When Hank complains that Boomhauer lied to him about not hiring prostitutes to sabotage the wedding, Dale points out that Hank never actually asked Boomhauer if he did it. He just assumed Boomhauer was responsible when the prostitutes arrived. Hank even says that Dale is right.
  • Evil Counterpart: Patch is Boomhauer without any of his positive traits. A philandering, sleazy scumbag who hits on any woman with a pulse.
  • Frame-Up: When Katherine and the wives show up to the bachelor party with prostitutes, Patch pins it on Boomhauer.
  • Idiot Ball: Hank honestly should have known better than to believe Boomhauer would sabotage someone's relationship, even if it is a past lover, since Boomhauer cherishes women enough to let them choose whoever they want to be with. It may be due to Hank caring more about being Patch's best man, clouding his judgement. Though he does realize his mistake at the end and has the foresight to at least ask Boomhauer about it.
    • Patch also. He framed Boomhauer for hiring the prostitutes to get Katherine to hate him. But she believes it was a romantic attempt for Boomhauer to get back together with her. Patch admits he was the one who hired them to make himself appear as a "hopeless romantic". This only made her hate him for framing Boomhauer and realize that he's a real sleaze, cementing their break-up.
  • Irony: Katherine believed Boomhauer was trying to frame Patch as some pervert by hiring prostitutes. But she learns that Patch really is one (and was the one who hired them).
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Hank when he realizes Patch was the one who really hired the prostitues, and let his brother take the fall for it.
  • Noodle Implements: The party game Peggy suggests playing involves using nail polish and a summer squash, which freaks her out.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Patch is only referred to and seen in this episode. But given his personality it's understandable why Boomhauer hasn't mentioned him till now.
  • Rule of Three: Hanks questions to Boomhauer, which he wants him to answer honestly.
    "Do you still love Katherine?"note
"Does the thought of Patch marrying her tear you up inside?"note
"Did you hire those ladies of easy virtue to frame Patch and break up the wedding?"note
  • Special Guest: Brad Pitt as Patch.
  • Stag Party: Patch and Katherine each have their own, which are thrown by Hank and Peggy respectively:
    • Patch's party is a lame game of poker with the partygoers playing for fritos, and Hank refusing to allow them to get louder than seventy decibels. Patch himself has a horrible time until the prostitutes arrive.
    • Katherine's party is a more subdue, quiet affair at Nancy's house, but the ladies don't participate in anything particularly fun, as all of the possible party games disgust Peggy.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Patch has more or less identical facial structure and physique as Boomhauer and speaks in identical drawl, with the main differences being his pompadour haircut and clothing color preferences (Boomhauer's black shirt and yellow tiger stripe swimwear vs Patch's red button shirt and white tiger stripe swimwear).
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: Between Boomhauer and Katherine.
  • With Friends Like These...: It is once again shown how quick Peggy is to suspect the worst in Hank despite the evidence. When Patch, blatantly tries to cover up that he hired the prostitutes by claiming, "Hank loves hookers", to frame Hank, Peggy gives her husband a Death Glare.
