Recap / King Of The Hill S 8 E 2 Reborn To Be Wild

Go To

Worried about Bobby's admiration of a violent rockstar, Hank signs him up for a Christian youth group. Only to find out the pastor mixes God with skating, tattoos and rock music. Elsewhere, Bill, Boomhauer and Dale start up a Last Meal Club.

Tropes:

  • As the Good Book Says...: When Pastor K finds out that Hank won't let Bobby go on stage with him for the second act, he brings his father over to try to set Hank straight. After Pastor K's father realizes that Hank just wants Bobby to go to his normal church, he tells Pastor K "What are you doing, Kevin? You forgot Number 5". He then pulls up his shirt and shows a tattoo with The (Protestant) Ten Commandments, pointing to Commandment Number 5: "Honor thy father and thy mother" (KJV).
  • Bland-Name Product: Hank pulls out one of Bobby's "Bean Bag Buddies", an obvious parody of Beanie Babies.
  • Commonality Connection: Hank and Pastor K's father find some common ground in dealing with their willful, sometimes very stubborn kids when K tries to convince Hank to let Bobby perform with him.
    Hank: Teenagers, huh?
    Pastor K's Father: Amen.
  • Flash In The Pan Fad: At the end of the episode, Hank breaks out an old box of Bobby's past fads (including his "Bean Bag Buddies", his "Virtual Pet", and his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Halloween costume), as well as a couple of his and Peggy's fads, explaining that he's trying to keep Bobby from turning God into just another temporary interest to eventually be forgotten.
Hank: I know you think that stuff you're doing now is cool, but in a few years, you're gonna think it's lame. And I don't want, uh, the Lord to, uh, you know, end up in this box.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: When looking inside the box with the past fads, the audience can see a Rubik's cube, a Furby, and several books, among other things.
  • Good Shepherd: While Pastor K's methods are odd, he seems a genuinely good guy and pastor.
  • I Was Quite a Fashion Victim: Turns out Hank was guilty of this, going through a Member's Only jacket phase. And as for Peggy...
    Bobby: Mom had blonde hair?
Hank: Farrah Fawcett was very popular back then.
  • Prisoner's Last Meal: Bill, Dale, Boomhauer, and Kahn are inspired by stories of death row prisoners' last meals and plan a dinner party featuring their own choices of what they would want for their last meal. When the dinner party does happen, everyone, except Bill, bails out for fear that the dinner would indeed be their last meal.
  • Special Guest: Gene Simmons as Pastor K's father and Sum 41 as the church group.
  • Take That!: One to Christian Rock and Christianity's attempts to try to attract young people with Totally Radical attitudes to the concept:
Hank: You're not making Christianity better, you're making rock-and-roll worse!
  • Tempting Fate: When the actual first meeting of the Last Meal Club comes to order, the guys soon book it in abject fear of taunting death...except Bill, who stays and chows down while crying, claiming that he eats when he's afraid. Kahn even lampshades this nearly verbatim.
Kahn: Yeah, I had a big lunch that, uh, didn't tempt fate.
  • Virtual Pet: Bobby used to have a handheld virtual pet. According to Hank, he used to carry it around everywhere until he got bored with it, and the virtual pet died.
  • You Are Grounded!: One of the rare times this is played straight, as Hank forbids Bobby to go to Messiahfest. Peggy's initially against this, saying Hank's simply overreacting, until she finds Bobby's earring and sides with him instead.
