Go To

Hank takes his mother and her friends to Port Aransas to see a miniature museum, but they arrive just as Spring Break happens. Bill tries to flirt with Peggy while Hank is away.

Tropes:

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Downplayed with the two guys Hank befriends at the bar. While they're not really malicious, Hank just thinks they're two down-to-earth guys who like to talk sports, but he's unaware they're here for Spring Break, and when Hank sees them again the next day and wants to greet them, they throw a water balloon at him.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: As they're leaving Port Aransas, Lillian says she can't wait until they're there and she often has a rather lost look on her face most of the time with loud sounds jolting her constantly and getting carsick from the sound of the radio.
  • Curse Cut Short: As they're driving down the street and they're cut off by a truck:
Hank: "How am I driving?" Mom, write this number down: "1-800-E-A-T-S-H-..." Never mind.
  • Escapism: Why Tilly loves her miniatures. This dating back to her marriage with Cotton, shown in a Flashback, during one of Cotton's rampage spells, when she's seen tending to them despite Hank's pleas for help. And the maker of the miniatures implies that a lot of older women feel the same about his products.
  • Glurge Addict: Hank thinks Tilly and the ladies are this, with their love of miniatures.
  • Grumpy Old Man: A gender inverted version with Tilly's friends, Delia and Maureen, whom constantly put down and criticize Hank throughout the trip. Lillian is the only one who doesn't do so.
  • Heel Realization: Hank after the argument with his mother. He goes into the miniature museum, where he runs into the maker Lyle Neff, who explains to Hank that his miniatures helped women during emotional crises. This makes Hank realize the miniatures helped Tilly during her marriage with Cotton and when he finds her, he gets her one of the Los Angeles International Airport.
  • Jerkass Ball: Tilly, who just a few episodes ago wanted Hank to stand up for her, not only lets her friends bully her son and disrespect him but she enables the bullying and even tries to make Hank (a middle aged adult) try to eat something he doesn't like just to appease her friends. When she forgets her unicorn, she throws a tantrum and insists that they go back and get it despite them running late for the ferry back home due to the Spring Break shenanigans.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Putting up with Bill's obsessive behavior all throughout the episode, Peggy finally has had enough when during Bobby's baseball game, Bill yells at the coach to put Bobby in the game, mortifying her. After he puts his arm around her, Peggy pushes Bill off the bleachers, causing him to fall and break his arm.
  • MacGuffin Just as Hank and the ladies leave Port Aransas, Tilly freaks out, realizing she left her unicorn miniature at the hotel. And after a verbal exchange, Tilly leaves the car to get it back.
  • No-Respect Guy: Hank, when it comes to the older women, especially Delia and Maureen. Even Tilly doesn't seem to stick up for her own son and agrees with a few of their criticisms.
  • Pop the Tires: Happens to Hank and the ladies when they try to get on the ferry boat but drive over a spike trap, blowing all four tires. Hank is hesitant to drive on the rims, but reluctantly does so after the MTV helicopter appears close to them.
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: Delia and Maureen are rude and disrespectful to Hank for the entire trip.
  • Serious Business: Hank and the ladies go to a restaurant to have cucumber sandwiches, which the women like. Hank wants a burger, but Tilly tries to get him to have the sandwich, with Hank even saying he doesn't like cucumber. The ladies get offended by this, with Tilly even feeling the need to apologize to the waiter for Hank.
  • Special Guest: Phyllis Diller as Lillian, Uta Hagen as Maureen, Pauly Shore as Deejay and Betty White as Delia.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Bill goes out of his way to make moves on Peggy, going as far as entering her house (without her knowledge) with a spare house key the Hills lent him.... when they were on vacation six years ago. He even acts as if Bobby is his son.
  • Stood Up: Played with. Bill plans a barbecue at his house and runs into Peggy and her family, inviting them over, but Peggy blatantly refuses. Bill still has his mind set on them coming anyway, and when they don't show it, he is hurt by this.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Lillian, whom having the radio on makes her carsick despite her denial. Hank finds out the hard way.
  • Water Guns and Balloons: Both are featured in the episode, with Hank even having to take the water gun from the MTV armadillo mascot and fight his way through the partygoers to rescue of the women who ran away.
  • Wet T-Shirt Contest: One happens, with the MTV DJ saying to choose between warm water or cold water. Hank then explains that's not a good idea, but then quickly gets the gist of it.
