Recap / King Of The Hill S 2 E 6 Husky Bobby

Go To

Bobby gets a job as a husky male model, which Hank attempts to put a stop to so Bobby won't end up embarrassed.

Tropes in the episode:

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: Bobby shows some shades of this, when he ends up buying an album and a bicycle helmet Hank promised to buy if he got good grades, and he pays Bill to rake the leaves, much to Hank's annoyance as it was one of Bobby's chores.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Hank insists he's trying to save Bobby from embarrassment but Bobby just responds, "Is that what you're afraid of? Or are you afraid you'll be embarrassed?"
  • Asshole Victim: Most of the other husky models probably did nothing to deserve being pelted by donuts. Not so with Andy Maynard though, as he needed to be knocked down a peg or two.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment:
    • During his argument with Peggy, Hank tells her that people victimize anyone who's different as he knows from experience. We get a flashback to a teenage Hank, and we're assumed to believe he was the target of bullying. But it turns out, Hank was the bully.
    • After Bobby learns he gets to walk first and asks what Andy Maynard thinks: "I'll tell you what Andy Maynard thinks. ... (breaks into tears) Andy Maynard always goes on first."
    • And when Bobby has to leave when Hank doesn't let him walk, he tells the director that he won't get his time in the spotlight, and as he walks dejectedly, Hank stops him, and as a hopeful Bobby asks "What?", Hank then gets a poncho for him to wear until he gets in the car.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: While Hank doesn't want Bobby entering the fashion show to end up being a target for bullying, Bobby counters his argument by saying he should stop trying to turn him into a smaller version of himself and let him do what he truly loves.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Hank sees Bobby's photo negatives, he reacts in horror over them, but Bobby thinks Hank is enthusiastic about them.
  • Expy: Andy Maynard is basically a more abrasive Stewart Stevenson.
  • Gretzky Has the Ball: In one of Bobby's photoshoots, he is dressed as a football player and the photographer shouts at him "go for the fifty-yard line, go for the sixty yard line! This is your Olympic dream come true!" Hank cringes at the photographer's lack of football knowledge.
  • Hard Truth Aesop: While there's nothing wrong with being different, the reality is there will be people who will mock and attack you for it. Sometimes it's best that you keep it to yourself so that you will be spared from any physical and verbal abuse.
  • Hypocrite: Despite Hank's shock and horror over Bobby becoming a husky model, a flashback shows that he was more than willing to mock the overweight back in his high school days. It's implied at the end, when Dooley and his gang crash the fashion show, that his own history of doing so and the results it can cause is the reason why he disapproves of Bobby's career.
  • I Was Never Here: Hank was saying this alongside his whole family when he took Bobby away from the photo shoot.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: After he discovers Bobby ran away, Hank tries to find Luanne, thinking she's left a Sleeping Dummy, but instead finds her and Buckley sleeping together, but since he's in a hurry to get Bobby, he just tells them to kick each other's asses.
  • Karma Houdini: Dooley and the bullies get off scot-free after raiding the fashion show.
  • Kids Are Cruel: Dooley's gang destroys the entire fashion show by throwing doughnuts at the models and spectators for no reason other than for laughs. It's the entire reason Hank was opposed to Bobby participating in the first place, knowing he'd have been tormented by Dooley just for being a "husky boy".
Hank: Put teenagers, husky boys, and doughnuts in the same room and you're just asking for trouble.
  • New Job Episode: Bobby works as a male model until Hank eventually puts a stop to it.
  • The Prima Donna: Andy Maynard is this, who tries to intimidate Bobby by claiming a whole make-up counter for himself and makes him get a brownie and doesn't take it well when Bobby is announced he'll go first on the walk.
  • The Scream: Hank does this when looking at Bobby's negatives and Bobby sharing one (of him wearing P Js and an open butt pouch with a cookie sheet) will make the newspaper the following day.
  • Sleeping Dummy: Bobby makes one with a football and bed sheets, which he leaves for Hank when he runs off to the fashion show.
  • Special Guest: Joanna Gleason as the Receptionist.
  • Ur-Example: The first of many King of the Hill episodes where Hank and Bobby would clash over Bobby's interests.
  • Weight Woe: Happens to Bobby when he discovers the clothing store his parents took him to is a fat kid's store, but Bobby gets over it when Peggy assures him being different is good.
