Recap / King Of The Hill S 13 E 7 Straight As An Arrow

Go To

Bobby decides to become a member of the Order of the Straight Arrow (even though it was established that Bobby is already a member according to the season one episode "Order of the Straight Arrow"), but the new counselor (voiced by Conan O'Brien's sidekick, Andy Richter) wants the training to be Lighter and Softer to accommodate his sons.

Tropes:

  • Armed with Pepper Spray: The guys try to distract Wesley when he's leaving his house and politely walk up to him to ask to use his phone... so pepper sprays them, which causes them to confess the real reason they're there.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Leaning more towards the sweet part. Hank manages to get Bobby and his friends into the activities of the old Straight Arrow, but Wesley and his sons quit.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: While Hank is right in that Wesley was a pushover and wanted to make the Order of the Straight Arrow tamer in an attempt to accommodate his sons, he was looking out for their well-being, and Hank, not realizing they had disorders, wasn't. Hank even admits to the fact they're both right and wrong at the end, although in Wesley's case he never told Hank they had disorders to begin with, so he made himself out to seem paranoid and inappropriately hostile.
  • Helicopter Parents: While Wesley at least explains why, this is very much the case: his children are all homeschooled, they don't watch TV or play video games, or anything seen as "predatory" including tag or football and all sleep together in a family bed. When Hank allows the kids free rein when Wesley goes home, his kids end up running away simply to have fun without his rules.
  • Homeschooled Kids: Wesley's children are homeschooled by his wife Annette, and during recess, they all take a family walk.
  • Karma Houdini: Wesley never apologizes or gets punished for screaming at Bobby, and for pepper spraying Bill, Dale and Boomhauer.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: Wesley and his wife Annette have six children.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Wesley's attempts to make things more accommodating for his sons might've been because of their disorders, but he at no point informs Hank or Bobby about this, otherwise Hank would've probably been more understanding and willing to help - and especially because as a scoutmaster, Hank needs to be privy to these things in case of an emergency. He even calls Bobby "a bad influence" after Bobby shows his kids a handheld game, even though Bobby had no idea he was doing anything wrong.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Wesley failed to inform Hank about his two sons’ conditions, leading Hank to assume that Wesley was being paranoid. Wesley never apologizes to Bobby for overreacting. Due to Wesley's poor leadership and also due to the kids preferring Hank over Wesley, he chose to quit.
  • Take That!: To people who want to make things Lighter and Softer to accommodate their own means.
