Recap / King Of The Hill S 13 E 8 Lucky See Monkey Do

Go To

Lucky's sister comes to visit, and gets into a fight with Peggy over how Luanne should raise her baby. Meanwhile, Bill goes on a road trip to track down the voice of a Whataburger drive-through employee.

Tropes:

  • Both Sides Have a Point: As pointed out by Hank, both Peggy and Myrna make very good points on how to raise a baby: Myrna is correct that many of Peggy's methods are outdated, but Peggy is correct that by trying too hard to be a modern mother, Myrna is treating her children like robots and not children. However, both are trying too hard to control Luanne, instead of letting her and Lucky make decisions for themselves, and in the end, Luanne decides that both of them have to wait outside the delivery room.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Bobby says that Myrna's kids ain't right, after noticing they aren't allowed juice, and at parties, instead sit quietly drinking water and reading a book.
  • Breaking the Cycle of Bad Parenting: Deconstructed. Myrna didn't enjoy growing up in a house where all of their dinners were road kill, so when she was old enough and had her own kids, she tried too hard to raise her kids right, treating them with coldness instead of love.
  • Clean, Pretty Childbirth: Peggy's perspective from giving birth was this because of painkillers. She mentions she never fully woke up until the ride home from the hospital.
  • Condescending Compassion: Myrna can be this way, especially around Peggy. During the baby shower, when Luanne is ignorant of what a breastfeeding pillow is, Myrna corrects her and then fears that Luanne doesn't know she's supposed to feed her own baby.
  • Everybody Has Standards: Bill might want a woman, but even he won't date a teenager, and leaves when he discovers that Jane is seventeen.
  • Godwin's Law: When Luanne tells Peggy that Myrna's red, black and white color palette is meant to help the baby's mental development, Peggy ponders aloud if that's why the Nazis chose those colors.
  • "Near and Dear" Baby Naming: Downplayed. Gracie's middle name is Margaret, after Peggy. Also parodied in that Luanne and Lucky were initially going to name her Lasagna since they both like it, but Peggy wasn't going to let that pass.
  • New Baby Episode: Luanne gives birth to her daughter in this episode, Gracie Margaret Kleinschmidt.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Peggy defending her methods isn't helped by her trying to pull a baby-sized clown doll out of a crib by the feet through the bars, tugging when the head gets caught in them. Seeing this makes Luanne decide to listen to Myrna, explicitly telling Peggy she thinks her way will get her baby killed.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Myrna is polite to Lucky, but she quickly takes over Luanne's birth, such as insisting she have a water birth with all of the neighbors present instead of having it at a hospital, despite Luanne's discomfort at the idea.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Bill manages to get to Buckeye and find Jane, only to discover Jane is seventeen. He promptly leaves, dejected.
