Recap / King Of The Hill S 13 E 9 What Happens At The National Propane Gas Convention

Go To

Buck is to be honored with an induction into the Propane Hall Of Flame, the top honor in the business. But when he arrives in Memphis for the ceremony, he finds a surprise: His bastard son "Ray-Roy".

Tropes:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Ray-Roy's real name is Jody, but he tells Buck to call him whatever he wants; as Buck can't remember his name, he continues to refer to him as Ray-Roy.
  • Blackmail: Buck manages to get Hank off the hook for his actions by doing this to the other chairmen, threatening to reveal their adultery to their wives if they don't reconsider their decision.
  • Broken Pedestal: After years of trying to keep Buck Strickland from acting like an ass, Hank gets plastered and proceeds to deliver a drunken rant to the entire propane convention about Buck being a "bastard-making bastard." before vomiting all over one of the Association's members.
  • The Dreaded: Buck immediately realizes he's in for Hell when an enraged Peggy tracks him down and forces him to realize how badly he's fucked Hank over throughout the years.
Buck [when Ray-Roy tries to sweettalk Peggy]: Save it son- you're hittin' the heavy bag this time!
  • Hand Wave: It's never explained why Bill, Dale, and Boomhauer were allowed to come along to the convention.
  • Karma Houdini:
    • Peggy rants about how often Buck keeps engaging in his boozing and womanizing, yet rarely gets any punishment for it after Hank's own drunken mishap.
    • In a more positive example, Buck himself manages to turn Hank into one in what basically amounts to blackmail. He even manages to convince the chairmen to give Hank the respect he finally deserves for his 25 years of service.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Ray-Roy is his daddy's son and then some. Inheriting his appetite for booze, women, and good times. Along with his business acumen.
  • Oh, Crap!: Buck's reaction when a furious Peggy finds him after Hank's drunken rant.
Buck: Oh Hell, this ain't gonna be good.
  • Pet the Dog: While Buck is responsible for Hank's drunken rant in the first place, he does recognize he's screwed up to the extent that he goes beyond what's required to make it right. Not only does he blackmail the Association into voiding Hank's suspension, he also persuades them to induct Hank into the Propane Hall of Flame.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Hank finally snaps after seasons of needing to deal with Buck Strickland's dumbass behavior, telling his boss he's had enough of trying to save Buck from himself.
  • The Voiceless: Excluding Tru Wagent, none of the First Ladies of Propane have any lines.
    • Boomhauer never utters a word.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Hank ends his drunken speech against Buck by hurling his guts out on a woman's hair. The only thing we see of it is the horrified reactions of all who watched it happen.
