Go To

Hank is shocked to discover his mother Tilly is marrying another man.

Tropes found in this episode:

  • Brick Joke: Chuck mentions at dinner that Tilly flipped off a trucker while they were driving. After stealing the RV, she does it again after getting cut off by another trucker.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Hank calls out Tilly's wild streak, having to constantly clean up after her when she makes a mistake.
  • December–December Romance: Lampshaded by Peggy, who notes that Chuck and Tilly are two lovebirds ready to start what's left of their lives together.
  • Exiled to the Couch: Or rather to Hank's couch. After an argument, Tilly leaves Chuck's belongings on the lawn and he is forced to stay with the Hills.
  • Flipping the Bird: Tilly does it to a trucker who cuts her off twice in the episode.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: Tilly marries Chuck despite only knowing him for a few weeks, and cheating on Gary. Despite the occasional hiccup, especially considering the RV, they are Happily Married at the end of the episode.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: Hank cites the fact that Tilly married Cotton as evidence that her judgment is unreliable. He's not really being fair given his own attempts to gain his father's respect but he's arguably not wrong.
  • The Loins Sleep Tonight: The stress of their new lifestyle causes this for Chuck.
  • Never My Fault: Tilly never accepts that she has a wild streak until Hank points it out, and even after Hank gives her "The Reason You Suck" Speech, she tells him that she wants to live on her own terms because then life "won't be boring."
  • Offscreen Breakup: Tilly broke up with Gary so she could be with Chuck, who she dated behind Gary's back.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: Hank freaks out at seeing Tilly and Chuck kiss, especially after Chuck grabs her rear.
  • Parent with New Paramour: Tilly eventually marries Chuck Garrison, who used to own a chain of hardwood stores. While Hank is suspicious of him, he turns out to be a Nice Guy who shares his love of tools.
  • Properly Paranoid:
    • Tilly mentions that Gary got paranoid and started snooping around... then he found out about Chuck.
    • Zigzagged with Hank. While he has reasons to worry about his mother, Chuck turns out to be a good man.
  • Series Continuity Error: Bobby can't believe how hot Arizona is, even if he's previously spent a week there back in "I Don't Want to Wait" and dropped off Tilly's antique furniture.
  • Special Guest: William Devane as Chuck Garrison and Beth Grant as Tilly Hill (one of the few times she was actually credited as a special guest)
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Hank gives Tilly one after she rescues her and Chuck, telling her how tired he is of having to clean up her messes whenever she makes an impulsive decision, and he has real reason to worry.
  • Uptight Loves Wild: Chuck fell in love with Tilly for her wild streak.
