Recap / Kid Cosmic S 3 E 2 Kid Cosmic And The Secret Of The Fourteenth Stone

Go To

The Global Heroes' experience a rise in fame as they continue to gather the Cosmic Stones. Their adventures continue as they face mummies, farmers, mermaids, and a familiar foe as they seek out a mysterious fourteenth Stone.

While it seems like the ultimate dream for Kid, Jo believes there is something off about this set of event and sets off to investigate.

Tropes:

  • Anti-Climax: The Biker in Black, the no-nonsense antagonist of Season 1 returns... only to get destroyed in a fight that doesn't even take up half of the episode. Given the revelation at the end of the episode, it was very intentional.
  • Anti-Villain: Papa G tries to subdue Jo when she finds out they're in a Lotus-Eater Machine, but he only does this because he wants to protect Kid from getting hurt by finding out his greatest fantasy is just that.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: The creepy kid with the precognition stone lives on a potato farm in Idaho and likes to carry one around. The stone gives him a Third Eye which both matches up with the state and potatoes being known for having eyes.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • The opening seems like a documentary about the Global Heroes, but it's just the Monster of the Week (Doc Goomentarian) being dramatic with his documentarian robot slime theme.
    • When Jo starts to figure out the world they're in is fake and rants about it to the Atlantean King, he appears about to confirm her suspicions as he states the quest for the fourteenth stone was all a ruse... So that Jo would become a mermaid princess as she had dreamed when she was a child.
  • Big "YES!": Chuck lets out one of these after he finds himself as the legs of the Kid Cos-Mech.
  • The Cameo: One of the child actors considered for playing Kid in the Global Heroes movie is Mac!
  • Chainsaw Good: The Kid Cos-Mech has shoulder blade chainsaws!
  • Creepy Child: One of the stone wielders the Global Heroes confront is a child with the precognition and clone stones. He uses both on an abandoned farm to pull of the disembodied laughter and evasive creeping around tropes inherent to such a setting.
  • Curse Cut Short: It's heavily implied I.R.I.S. was about to say Carla was in the position of the Kid Cos-Mech's penis, but Carla interrupts her.
  • Foreshadowing: Kid congratulates Chuck for jumping over the Biker in Black's ramming attack. Chuck, who had been consulting the mech's manual on how to jump, is confused. It turns out that the fights are always rigged to work in their favor in the fantasy world.
    • In the second season finale, when Fantos says to Jo before he throws her (along with the others) to the portal, "You're living in a fantasy world, girl." It becomes clear that he literally means it when it is revealed that the portal leads them to the Lotus-Eater Machine.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Chuck doesn't know how to use the mecha to jump and is seen consulting the manual on how to do it.
  • Humongous Mecha: The Kid Cos-Mech and the Biker in Black's mecha are both large enough to duke it out in the city like all classic mecha fights.
  • Irony: Tuna Sandwich operates Kid Cos-Mech's thumbs, but as he points out, being a cat, he doesn't have thumbs and feels unqualified for it. There's also the case of the legless Chuck operating the legs, which he is giddy about.
  • Joke of the Butt: Jo's position in the Kid Cos-Mech is the butt.
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: Jo finds out that the world they are in is constucted to play out Kid's heroic fantasies, and Papa G is basing them off of Kid's comic books.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: It's revealed Papa G knew the Local Heroes were in a Lotus-Eater Machine before Jo caught on, but he didn't tell the cast because Kid was living out his greatest fantasies and he couldn't bring himself to take that away from him.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Doc Goomentarian is based on Werner Herzog.
  • Oh, Crap!: When the Biker's mech turns into a motorbike, Fry and Hamburg go from being excited to being scared.
  • Punny Name: Doc Goomentarian = Documentarian.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Parodied with Skippy Olsen, who trained with Kid in the PPG, an event the audience never saw. Papa G and Kid immediately know who he is but Jo doesn't.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Atlantis has a bunch of singing sea life reminiscent of the ones in The Little Mermaid.
    • Before revealing his third eye, the creepy child with the precognition stone resembles Porky Minch.
    • Skippy Olsen is likely a reference to Jimmy Olsen from Superman.
  • Squee: Fry and Hamburg have an excited reaction to the Kid Cos-Mech's cool shoulder blade chainsaws.
  • Transforming Mecha: The Biker in Black's mech transforms into a motorbike!
  • Useless Spleen: Carlos wonders why he and Ramona are in the position of the Kid Cos-Mech's spleen.
Carlos: What does the spleen do? WHAT DOES THE SPLEEN DO?
  • Wham Episode: Jo discovers that she and her friends are trapped in a fantasy world. Papa G had learned about this sometime after last episode but keeps quiet about it so Kid can live out his dream of being a hero.
  • Wham Shot: Jo coming across the PPG and the others in the building, who aren't moving a muscle.
