Recap / Iron Fist (2017) S2E1 "The Fury of Iron Fist"

Go To

After the Hand's defeat, the city is on the verge of a gang war for control. Danny and Colleen try to handle their day-to-day life, while old acquaintances are making their first move for a big plan...

  • Action Prologue: We have one where Danny stops a truck heist by the Golden Tigers.
  • Battle Couple: Danny and Colleen. If it wasn’t clear they were this before, this episode makes it clear that they are in a Diner Brawl near the end.
  • Cacophony Cover Up: Danny practises with the Iron Fist in a disused subway tunnel, waiting till a train passes nearby. Two red lights above him resemble the eyes of the dragon he had to face to earn it.
  • Call-Back:
    • Danny is grateful to Colleen for all that she did for everyone during The Defenders (2017).
    • Joy hasn’t forgotten how Ward concealed the truth about their father being alive from her.
  • Diner Brawl: Danny and Colleen take out two different gangs while inside a Chinese restaurant, Colleen taking on the young punks in the kitchen while Danny takes on a rival gang that happened to turn up at the same time, both parties trying to shake down the owner.
  • Drowning My Sorrows
    • Joy is thrown by Danny's innocent concern for her, though not enough to change her course of action, and is shown downing a glass of wine afterwards.
    • Ward is going to a Tropaholics Anonymous meeting for his addiction but is failing to take part, instead indulging in sex with his sponsor, believing the things he actually wants to change—presumably his relationship with his sister—are beyond repair.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Yang, the boss of the Hatchet gang, has a wife. Davos threatens that she will suffer if Yang changes the price of their deal again.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Joy now wears a sexy black dress, to the visible surprise of her brother.
  • Evil Power Vacuum: Danny feels that the Hand left this after they were defeated.
  • False Reassurance: Danny tells Joy that he hopes she succeeds in whatever venture she does next. Joy quips that his words mean a lot to her, given that his downfall is what she's plotting.
  • Humble Hero: Danny has left the running of Rand Enterprises to Ward and works at a moving company now.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Danny definitely isn't happy about what happened to K'un-Lun, but he insists that he still did the right thing, as he ensured the Hand's destruction.
  • Ignored Expert: Ward is quite baffled when Danny just puts a signature under Joy's offer to buy her out, being sure that it is a mistake. As it turns out, she is conspiring with Davos against Danny, so he is right about it being suspicious, just not why.
  • Intimate Hair Brushing: Colleen finds a family heirloom has been donated to the charity where she works, a wooden box holding the comb and brush her mother used to brush Colleen's hair.
  • It's All About Me: Joy accuses Ward of this when he says that her attempt to buy herself out of Rand Enterprises just a plot to depose him. Turns out Joy does have hostile intentions, not only towards her brother but Danny too. While Davos has reason to resent Danny and Joy to resent Ward, Joy is wrong blaming Danny for everything that went wrong in her life, which was actually the fault of her father and Madame Gao.
  • One-Man Army:
    • Danny is clearly established as this.
    • As is Colleen at the end when dealing with a gang running a protection racket on a restaurant.
  • Pedestrian Crushes Car: Danny stops truck by destroying its engine with an Iron Fist from the side.
  • Pet the Dog: Davos' talk with Danny is basically his last chance offer to give him the power of the Iron Fist without any violence. Unfortunately Danny refuses, unaware that Davos is making the offer.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Davos doesn't tell Danny that he actually has a way to transfer the power of the Iron Fist. Given his resentment of Danny this may well be deliberate, so Davos can tell himself that he gave his friend a Last-Second Chance without the chance of him accepting it.
  • The Resenter: We are reminded that Davos is this to Danny. Joy is this to Danny and Ward for lying to her and their involvement with Harold's death.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Danny is busy doing some catching up to all the stuff he missed in 15 years. Colleen is amused at the fact that he doesn't even know who SpongeBob SquarePants is.
  • Sanity Slippage: Mary seems to be going through this after seeing the sticky notes in her home telling her to stay inside. As she suffers from dissociative identity disorder, they were likely put up by her.
  • Straight Edge Evil: Davos doesn't drink and keeps his diet straight to ensure his physical prowess.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Joy was the kind one who accepted Danny in the first season and Ward was his opponent; now she's the predator hoping to hurt him and Ward is struggling to help him.
  • We Used to Be Friends: The interaction between Danny and Davos cements them as this.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Danny unleashes the Iron Fist, demonstrating why he shouldn't do so. It causes immense damage to the environs.
