Recap / Il Etait Une Fois Man E 07 The Pax Romana

Go To

Original French Title: Pax Romana

Setting: 52 BC to AD 1

Following the battle of Alesia, Gallic chief Vercingetorix surrenders to the triumphant Julius Caesar. The Gallic prisoners are taken to Rome, including Pierre and Jumbo. Once in Rome, Pierre and Jumbo serve as gladiators, help build the roads, and serve a wealthy family after saving them from a house fire.

Tropes:

  • Ancient Rome
  • Away in a Manger: The very last segment of this episode involves the life of Jesus, from His birth in a stable in Bethlehem to His crucifixion in Jerusalem.
  • Downer Beginning: The episode starts with Vercingetorix's surrender to Caesar.
  • Dub Name Change: Although Lucius Sergius keeps his name in the English dub, he is referred to as a patrician, whereas in the original French, he is a "chevalier," or an "equestrian."
  • Et Tu, Brute?: The English version plays the trope word-for-word. The original French version has Caesar saying "Toi aussi, mon fils" ("You too, my son"), which is the French translation of the historical quote ("Tu quoque, fili mi"), rather than the Shakespeare one.
  • Finish Him!: The crowd turns their thumbs down when they see how poorly the murmillo did against the retiarius, who kills him.
  • Gladiator Games: Pierre and Jumbo are made to fight beasts in the arena. When the crowd sees how well they do in doing so, they raise up their thumbs to let the two gladiators live.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Lucius Sergius is a Nice Guy, but he doesn't hesitate to beat his barber a little for (accidentally) cutting him during his morning shave.
  • Happiness in Slavery: By the end of the episode, Pierre and Jumbo are glad to serve Lucius Sergius, who is a nice guy, although a bit strict.
  • Heroic Fire Rescue: Pierre and Jumbo save the lives of Lucius Sergius' wife and children, earning them his trust.
  • Human Traffic Jam: Happens when Jumbo bumps into the other Gallic prisoners, causing them and the Roman legionaries to fall to the ground like dominoes.
  • Made a Slave: Pierre and Jumbo.
  • Public Bathhouse Scene: Towards the end of this episode, Pierre, Jumbo, and Lucius Sergius all go to the public baths, where they swim around in the water, wrestle with other people, visit a steam room, and (in Lucius' case) gets a nice massage from Jumbo.
  • Science Marches On: In-Universe example: the teacher's astronomy lecture exactly mirrors Ptolemy’s Almagest. As Pierre listens in, he scratches his head and leaves.
Teacher: The earth is a ball suspended in the sky, which forms a solid and hollow sphere around it. Inside the sphere revolves the sun, shining on all the poor devils who live upside-down on the other side of the earth!
    • The Comic-Book Adaptation is even more explicit in pointing out that this scientific theory would be proven wrong centuries later. The Romans would have taken Ptolemy's word for it, though.
  • Sympathetic Slave Owner: Lucius Sergius
  • A Taste of the Lash: Centurion Teigneux attempts this on Gaulish POW Jumbo, who turns out to be a No-Sell.
  • There Will Be Toilet Paper: Centurion Teigneux and Legionary Nabot are having a shave in the barbershop Lucius Sergius is passing by. The barber is doing a poor job of it, resulting in the two men leaving the barbershop with bandages all over their faces.
