Recap / I Carly S 02 Ep 03 I Owe You

Go To

iOwe You is the 3rd episode of the 2nd season of iCarly.

After Sam borrows money from Carly and Freddie one too many times, she has to figure out how to get enough to pay them back.

Meanwhile, Spencer decides to help a girl sell fudge balls for her troop, but finds his job increasingly difficult.

Tropes:

  • Alpha Bitch: The teen Sunshine Girls display this when they flip Spencer's table and then push him when he's on a skateboard.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Sam has many grievances over working at Chili My Bowl, but of varying misery, with 1) rude customers who talk back to her, 2) a Mean Boss manager who made her clean urinals, and 3) she can't eat the chili there while being forced to smell it and can't go online.
  • Artistic License – Law: Unlike what Principal Franklin says, asking for money on the internet, even from minors, is not illegal in the United States. This would violate your freedom of speech, you have the right to ask for money (without even offering a product or service in return) on the internet so long as you are not defrauding anyone and are not lying about why you need the money. At the same time, however, they also don't question the fact that the funds being sent are delivered as cash, which would more than likely a liability in its own way — while it's not strictly illegal, sending cash in the mail is generally a bad idea precisely because there's no recourse to recover/reimburse them if they get lost/stolen/destroyed.
  • Break the Haughty: After being forced by her domineering boss to clean the men's bathrooms including the urinals and toilets, Sam breaks down into tears, claiming she can't handle the pressure being put on her to pay back the money she owes Carly and Freddie. Carly asks Sam to quit, but Sam feels she doesn't deserve to until she pays them back.
  • Burger Fool: Sam becomes an employee at "Chili My Bowl", a typical fast food joint that specializes in chili when compelled to Work Off the Debt that she owes to Carly and Freddie. She claims that she loves the chili there but isn't allowed to eat any of it.
  • The Dreaded Toilet Duty: Sam's boss orders her to go and clean out the toilets- the men's toilets, to be specific. Sam was utterly appalled by the mere idea of it, angrily asking if one of the male employees could do it instead. When forced into it, she gains a look of apprehension as she nervously approaches the bathroom door. Then a fat, burping customer walks out, scaring her even more.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending:
    • When Sam receives the cash (secretly from Carly and Freddie, who got to keep the money after Spencer sent their viewers fudge balls) to pay off her debt to her friends, goes happily volatile over this, gets revenge on her mean boss by shoving a toilet plunger onto his face, steals some of the customers' fries, eats chili like a wild animal in front of customers who grow disgusted at her, and finally runs out of the store.
    • Spencer gets back at the mean Sunshine Girls by flaunting the new bike he won for that little girl in front of them before flipping over their table, ruining their stand.
  • Girl Scouts Are Evil: Spencer gets abrasively abused by the Sunshine Girls, who appear to be teenagers and are over the age limit for being girl scouts. Their awful behavior may have been why Emily, the competing girl scout who Spencer is helping out, was crying so much.
  • It's Personal: Initially, Spencer runs the Fudge Ball stand for the purpose of winning a bike for a little girl, and winning over her mother. After the other Girl Scouts attempt to sabotage him, his purpose becomes simply to get back at them.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The teen Sunshine Girls finally get their comeuppance after Spencer wins the bike and destroys their stand while mocking them.
  • Loophole Abuse: Spencer realizes a loophole behind soliciting money from kids over the internet: it's against the law unless the one receiving money provides a product or service in return. Thus, the iCarlys provide the fudge balls from the troop, which not only allows Sam to quit her job, but also wins Spencer the bike for the little girl. Though this loophole abuse stems from a so-called action that Principal Franklin deems illegal but really isn't in the United States.
  • Ordered Apology: When Sam gets into an argument with a rude customer, her boss intervenes and tells her to apologize to him, as per customer policy. Sam reluctantly and falsely does so to the customer. He doesn't buy it and blows a raspberry at her, causing Sam to flip out and try to attack him.
  • Overly Long Gag: "Just give me some soup!" "I ain't gonna give you no soup!" "Just give me some soup!" "I ain't gonna give you no soup!" "Just give me some soup!" "I ain't gonna give you no soup!"
  • Scout-Out: The Sunshine Girls.
  • Shockingly Expensive Bill: Sam is shocked in horror to find that Freddie calculated her total debt to her friends to be $526. In response, Sam tries offering meager contents out of her pockets but it doesn't add up, so she has to resort to begging her online viewers for money, but Principal Franklin orders her to send it all back. So as a desperate, last resort Sam starts working at "Chili My Bowl".
  • Take This Job and Shove It: When Sam gets the large amount of money at the chili restaurant she was working at, she freaks out in a delighted way. She starts screaming with joy, dances on the counter, eats a customer’s fries, eats a spoonful of chili on the counter, slams a plunger that she had to use to clean up a nasty bathroom in her boss's face, and runs out the restaurant whooping with victory.
  • The Voiceless: Emily the Sunshine Girl, not counting her nervous sobbing.
